I was at the renaming of the Blue Peter train at Doncaster in 1970 with 50k people. My father was a fitter engineer and serviced the Flying Scotsman, Mallard and many more. He also served in WW2 for 5 years, repairing Spitfires, Hercules, Dakotas etc. So proud and a great dad. But he passed away with asbestosis sadly.

One of the penalties of working with steam locos, sadly. Asbestos poisoning affected many workers at The Plant. They use different insulation these days thank goodness ....... Andy

@@AndyDandanFisherSteam Yes, good. At the time the workforce did not know the danger of it, but the Government did. My father worked there for 43 years and BR tried to make out it was his smoking. We went to the High Court, even though my father received compensation, I did not celebrate as I knew how ill he would be.

This is actually quite interesting, because it's the other half of what happened that day. Blue Peter ran from Finsbury Park to York via the Midland Main Line and Sheffield on another railtour of the same name earlier that same day, with 13 coaches and a 47 on the rear. The return leg of that tour was worked by a Deltic, D9000 'Royal Scots Grey'. This obviously isn't that one, as it has Vintage Trains stock and is heading south. The other tour is on Six Bells Junction, but this one isn't. Clearly it went up to York on one tour for a Blue Peter TV segment and left on the other tour.
