UNI2 Meta - Is Lond Good?

  • My thoughts on UNI2 and how well or not Londrekia will perform in the competitive meta. This project was initially five minutes longer, but I lost it and had to recreate it from scratch, so... it feels a bit scuffed, but it'll get the main points across. Skip to 4:30 for character footage.
    What do think of this character criteria? How well does your character rate based on these categories? Feel free to drop a comment.
    EDIT: Thanks for the discussion in the comments, it's been fun. I made a few errors in this video, so just to clarify:
    -You can still OS with crouch shield, but it's a 1D~AD input and is more awkward and risky. The bigger implication of the 1AD change is that if you "leak" an AD input from OSing, you can get hit.
    -4C is still going to be susceptible to a lot of horizontal reversals, but it's now -8 on block up from -13, so it'll be safe to Merk 236C and Seth 623C at the very least, possibly more depending on spacing. Other frame data changes here: x.com/tome0321...

    As a newcomer to UNI, I wasn't sure if I was in good hands at the start of this video. Recognized your name from a tournament, but not much else. Then you're all "old UNIs are survival horror, this is a killing game" and I knew we'd be sharing two languages; FGs and spreading Despair. This was a good look at Lond, I might give him a try when the new game comes out!

    When I first decided to finally jump into uniclr, lond was the character that immediately appealed to me the most, but I remember I couldn’t find basically any footage of him and I was stuck not rlly sure what to do. I ended up playing Wagner since I felt much more like I could learn more, and I really enjoy her, but I’m really excited to see more lond with the changes so far. I only rlly played Wagner in the beta but when I did play lond, ice rain really was just crazy. It genuinely is such a good tool for him and I can’t wait to for the game to come out so I can experiment with him more. Thank you for the video.

    As a londrekia main that didn't get a chance to play the beta/wants to know the changes, thank you so much for this video! That ice rain looks very promising-- it's good that he has some type of aerial special move now. Does it cancel projectiles like hildas 'rain' move? The changes in UNI2 seem promising from the gameplay I've seen!

      It’s too bad you weren’t able to play the beta but I promise you’re in for a good time in January! He feels great. I didn’t test if Ice Rain clashes with other projectiles, mostly because it won every interaction I used it in. It does remind you a bit of Hilda’s Nail Torrent, huh?

    Honestly when I played the beta last weekend I honestly was super in love with the game even though I wasn't really doing any of the new things, because it definitely felt like I was still playing the UNI I liked playing and wasn't a completely different game, Linne felt pretty good but I saw a video covering all of the changes and I felt really dirty because I feel like she's just bonkers now

    Great video! Loved how structured it was, rather than just blurbing out random points. How do you feel about the movement speed changes? From my experience in other genre's, slight movement speed changes can have large ripple effects. Although I have no baseline to judge such a change from a fighting game pov.

    • @foxof42
      @foxof42  9 місяців тому +3

      The movement changes feel fantastic to me! “Movement feeling good” is such a simple concept, but it can be a tough challenge on a game dev. If they pull it off well, it gives the game a good foundation. I’ve always liked movement in UNI, but it feels even snappier now.
      As far as competitive implications, I think in many ways it actually makes dash > throw situations more consistent for BOTH players. We see the “whiffed throw is plus” situation a lot less, or if we do, it ends with the person who whiffed the throw getting thrown by the defender, which feels much more appropriate than the defender getting an OS crushed by the person who ran up… entirely by accident. So we see that interaction less, but we didn’t need a bbtag/mbtl “set run distance” throw mechanic to make it happen. Big win in my book!

    Played a lot of the beta and those questions you posed about character strength helped me think about Enkidu. I like him a lot, and I think he’s not a super struggle bus character, but seems like he’s weak to shield and has to commit pretty hard when not doing basic rebeat pressure. Hopes he gets some more buffs in the final release.

      One thing that has come up since this video was posted was that VO appears to be slower than the beta, 16F rather than 13F. This opens up safejab meaties against VO, which I think helps Enkidu and Mika a lot.
      I’ve also heard that some hurtboxes have been increased, but I can’t actually verify that. If that’s the case, that could help him as well.

    • @foxof42
      @foxof42  10 місяців тому +6

      You’re doing pretty alright, actually, but there will be an adjustment period. You will have to tweak your gameplan somewhat as Hilda to account for j[C] being -10 on shield by using setups with the new EX move she got. As Chaos, you will be less incentivized to hard zone with Azhi from fullscreen and will have more success setting up sandwich pressure and mixups. Both of these characters have strengths that make up for their weaknesses on defense, but they’ll be more dependent on system mechanics in a tight spot. These are NOT “well-rounded” characters, they have their dedicated niches and they need to be played to their strengths in order to succeed. Don’t let anyone tell you they “aren’t playing UNI” (terrible meme), they have to run a tight gameplan and abuse their cheap stuff in order to do well.

    I saw that 1AD throw OS was gone and I think that was a fine change since throw was meant to “equalize” the on-paper high strength of defense and shielding in the game. But now that I’m seeing more of the general changes, I’m rather worried I won’t enjoy uni2 as much as I enjoy clr. I enjoyed clr because I felt like I had a little more control on defense in a way that was balanced really well with offensive trickery. But the way you make uni2 sound and demonstrate, it’s just another Blazblue where the defender is constantly screwed over for not making the perfect read while the offender throws 8 mixups per second into a safe pressure reset. Just because the game speed is so high that offense is next to impossible to deal with unless you have an encyclopedia in your brain on every possible character option. Uni2 seems to have less mistakes that an offense can make. Whereas clr was structured around that “stagger or rebeat” offense that meant the offense had to use their brain a little more. Unsure if I’ll play if this holds true.

    • @foxof42
      @foxof42  10 місяців тому +6

      I want to take some time to address the points you bring up, because I think they’re a valid concern. Before I get into it though, please just understand that when I quote you, I don’t mean anything as a “dunk” or to be combative, it’s just very much a topic worth exploring.
      “…it’s just another Blazblue where the defender is constantly screwed over for not making the perfect read while the offender throws 8 mixups per second into a safe pressure reset.”
      Hyperbole aside (because UNI characters definitely do not get that many chances), probably the strongest type of offense in UNI2 imho is the type that puts the opponent into two guesses - one on the throw tech, and one after the pressure reset. In a fundamental sense, this is just run up assault, the most basic UNI mixup. The difference between something like assault and what characters like Carmine are doing to you is that you can’t 3CAD something like a bomb release shimmy. However, these aren’t infallible. I actually said, “Can’t use crouch shield OS,” found it on a second listen through, and cringed. That’s not quite accurate. You can actually 1D~AD OS to deal with those “setplay throw” situations, but that comes with additional risk because of how awkward it is to input. You need to press 1D and then manually time ~AD 2-3 frames later. I’m hoping the full release gives us more leniency on that input, but the point stands - there’s definitely counterplay to even the trickiest situations characters can put you in, and in that sense, UNI’s nuanced defense is very much alive.
      “Just because the game speed is so high that offense is next to impossible to deal with unless you have an encyclopedia in your brain on every possible character option.”
      I think that having deep knowledge of an opponent’s pokes and how to deal with them is a defining attribute of a high level player. It takes a lot of work to know exactly what button to press on defense when presented with pressure RPS like rebeats, and that’s very much a good thing! As I mentioned in my video, the strength of throw threats is *validated* by how strong pressure is, because if you can condition the opponent to not contest your pressure, throw - making them guess on a tech option - becomes available. Knowing how to play well defensively doesn’t just mean shielding and rotating option selects, it also means protecting your space with your buttons so that you aren’t run over. This has been very true since ST, but it comes to the forefront more now that playing passively and waiting to input an OS is not as powerful.
      “UNI2 seems to have less mistakes that an offense can make. Whereas CLR was structured around that ‘stagger or rebeat’ offense that meant the offense had to use their brain a little more.”
      In many ways, while throw itself is much easier to capitalize on as a threat, well-structured pressure is all the more important. If you can’t effectively condition your opponent with your pressure, your ability to threaten throw is severely diminished. You also of course still have to account for shielding in a game where cycle dominance can mean the end of the round if someone secures celestial, and while rare, it almost always happens from defense. There’s still a heavy onus on the attacker to balance their pressure around the defender’s decisions. Also, 13F VO is extremely difficult or impossible to police without specific callouts, so a defender can opt out of holding pressure by spending meter much more easily than ever before. If you are already pacing your offense and playing smartly, you’ll do well. However, some characters get setplay from a knockdown, and that’s always been the case.
      The game may not click for you competitively, and if that’s you, that’s ok! I know at least one hyper-defensive player who thinks they may be stepping back competitively because they aren’t as rewarded for the style of play they’re used to. That’s perfectly fine, but I’d still recommend checking out the game “casually” - enjoying the new GGPO netcode and combos, because the game is genuinely a joy to play.
      If you want to see some high level UNI2 play to get an idea of the pacing, this was an AWESOME set from the beta weekend, definitely would recommend checking it out:

    • @foxof42
      @foxof42  10 місяців тому +2

      I think iceboy was also good in CLR, but not on release - he got buffs in 1.04 and it also took a long time to develop the character during COVID. Still, I’ll admit he definitely had more flaws than in UNI2. Overall I think he was rated poorly because he had very limited representation even though his kit itself was pretty strong.
      It’s also worth pointing out that in Japan, the strongest Londrekia that I saw was Mawaru’s sub… Which largely borrowed from me. I was the only one pushing the character for quite a while. Now, Defiant is wanting to take the character seriously, so I think we will see more representation in UNI2 for sure.
