This is actually very helpful and im glad I found this. So what AMD said about am4 cooler compatability was technically true. it just boils down to if Cooler manufacturers required you to replace your Backplate. The thermalright AXP90 is actually compatible with the AM5 mobos with some nuances. The screws are actually small enough to pass through the screw holes of AM5's backplate if you are careful and patient enough. The cooler's backplate then will be able to sit on the existing backplate and then you fasten it up. Works pretty good at least on the B650I.

Scythe US put out an article on their website that most of their current coolers (including both versions of the Fuma 2) are compatible with AM5.
I used to work for a company with a similar strategy: We were supposed to deny any news until it was official because the decisions in the management were held back from the support team right until the day the official statement went public. So we sent e-mails to customers that something doesn't work at 8:59 AM, the news went live at 9:00 AM, and the support team was officially informed many hours or days later so we had to check the public news in the meantime. So I would never blame the support team of a company.

This doesn't take AIOs into consideration, where there's even more confusion.
Corsair have said that all their AM4 AIOs are compatible with the AM5 socket. NZXT on the other hand have said that while their X and Z AIO AM4 brackets fit on an AM5 socket, there are height differences that may result in gaps between the AIO and the CPU. As a result of this, they're supplying AM5-specific brackets to anyone that has an X|Z AIO who also purchased an AM5 motherboard. This isn't some Scythe scam as NZXT are burdening the expense and giving the AM5 brackets out for free. Their reasoning must be legitimate, otherwise, why go through the effort and cost.
So, just because an AM4 cooler may fit on the AM5 socket, doesn't mean that the fit will be precise.

I have the Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Black. It is good to know that I can use it in the future when I upgrade to AM5. I plan not to switch before Ryzen 8000 though. Maybe its then to weak for the cpu but time will tell.

does an am5 l9 bracket compatible with an am4 motherboard tho? I tried inquiring about the am4 bracket but it seems like it's out of stock now and the only available is am5. They said as long as there is an included backplate on my motherboard it should work fine but now I'm not so sure

How come we do not press intel and amd to have the same cooler installation mechanisms so all coolers will always fit on all motherboards and cpu's without adapters?

Came from Reddit to say this was a great video, thanks for explaining it so clearly. AMD made the bad decision of making IHS thicc in order to make AM4 coolers compatible with AM5 in theory, but in practice the compatibility is very limited.
I'd rather keep my Deepcool Gammax 400 V2, which uses a custom blackplate, and upgrade to a Ryzen 5000 instead of spending a lot of money on AM5 platform and a new cooler.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, that makes sense about the Gammax 400 V2, especially when it comes to trying to save some money.

Do you know offhand if an NZXT Kraken x53 AIO will fit an AM5 socket, I have a Ryzen 5 7600x and the board is an Aorus B650 Elite AX. I keep finding different answers online, some ppl say yes, some say no. Thanks in advance!

Thank you for being very explicit about the retainer clips! I was searching all around for info about whether those brackets retainer clips were the same between AM4 and AM5 (needed to replace some I accidentally sold with the old MoBo)! Thanks again!
Update: For anyone in my situation, needing to replace the cpu bracket clips above and below the cpu socket. I have an x670e and now can confirm from money wasted, that not all brackets are *not exactly* the same for us. The spacing between the screws on the frame don’t allow for the additional support built into a lot of stock AM4 CPU brackets clips. Not the part on the AIO, the part your AIO attaches to. I accidentally gave mine to a young person learning to build computers who needed spare parts and ordered on made for AM4 and while it fits in one direction, it doesn’t in the other and it’s the wrong way 😢. A lot of AM4 brackets seem to have a little flair of support. The AM5 bracket that came with my MoBo was slimmer and so now I’m trying to see if that kid still has my part because I can’t seem to find any online without it! This also makes me wonder if the two types of clip are actually different heights? Even if by millimeters I wonder if that would screw up your CPU? I’m replacing mine because despite everything else being ok, when I reused my Kraken on the AM5 CPU it died in two weeks. Coincidence?

does the am4 cooolers perform just as good on am5? Cuz the chips look like thy have different proportions, doesnt that influence the area that connects to the heatsinks and therefore the cooling performance?
Also big shout out to noctua for always providing free new mounting-kits!!!

    • @bluej511
      @bluej511 Рік тому

If they have a big mounting surface they should. I believe 7000 is like 3-5000 where the die is offset from the center so a truly flat cooler is incredibly beneficial.

    Hello,
Do you think the diameter of the backplate screws is the same as the LGA 2011? Because I have a cooling system that is not compatible, except perhaps with the LGA 2011 socket fixing kit which comes with this same cooling system.

8 of 9 of my AM4/AM5 are now on Noctua. Whenever an excellent deal came up local I would pick it up. $40 brand new D15’s. $30 U14S. U9S and D9L for $20. I only bought my first one U14S new for $63.75 in 2019. After that I just kept an eye out for them. There are other brands that work but the customer service sending me parts for free and well engineered mounting has sold me.
