    My favorite thing about the Tremors movies is that it never retreads itself, never reboots, always continues to move forward. Sure, it'll do a prequel, but the prequel was a very different film from the original, despite being mainly about getting back to the graboids. Even the TV series tried new things, rotated casts, generally just continued to pick up where the last movie left off.
    It reminds me of the Showa Godzilla series. It just posits a world where monsters are real, and what happens as we come to grips with the fact.

    • @FuugaNatsu
      @FuugaNatsu 5 років тому +12

      @@HORRIOR1 I like to think that the stuff his ancestor experienced back then changed him, so he wanted to make sure that, if the creatures ever came back, his kids/grandkids would have the best odds of survival possible, and that kept running in the family, ultimately resulting in our favourite Burt. Just generations of "when shit hits the fan, which it is bound to do some day, WE'RE GONNA BE READY FOR THE BASTARDS!"

    Tremors is the anti-Jurassic Park: The scientist admits she doesn't have all the answers and people with guns know how to use them effectively. It is one of the many many reasons I love it so. 😁

    Yeah, the new UA-cam content ID rules are pretty tough.

    • @FuugaNatsu
      @FuugaNatsu 5 років тому +8

      ... y'know, now that I think about it, the graboids really are a good stand-in for UA-cam. They're big, they consume as much as possible on pure instinct, and when content creators find ways to have the broken system not fuck them over, they get a little bit smarter. They're not intelligent, but they do learn in a limited capacity. Thus the ID system gets a minor overhaul that'll consume everything again, until the next time someone thinks of a way to avoid being hurt by their gluttony.

When Graboinds attack and everybody climbs to the roofs, there's no scene where a token jerk pushes a little girl out of the way to save himself or something like that, and throughout the whole movie people are working together to solve the problem.

      I've actually done this exact thing for a D&D game, and the choice I went with was an Ankheg. Works for a party that's not too high-level, and when you defeat it you've got materials for a good set of armor.
      I enjoyed setting the party up for it as well, giving them a Knowledge check to have heard secondhand stories of a trade caravan that was attacked by these burrowing creatures, and the only survivor was a guard who was resting on a nearby boulder when it happened. Of course, it's the kind of story that got passed around taverns a lot, and if all of them were true, then that boulder would've been crowded.
      I hope that whatever you decide for yours, the party enjoys it.

    I have watched Tremors and I was blown away by the intelligent script. There is no Idiot Ball, even less of an Idiot Plot, yet the plot knows to avoid settling into a status quo. Every time it seems the group might be safe and hold out for a while (which happens surprisingly often!), there's an upset through no fault from the cast.
    They also avoid the tired trope of point dispute and infighting until the very end, where it become a clear symptom of being utterly exhausted and desperate at running out of ideas in an impossible situation that has been steadily getting worse and worse.
    Add to this that the Graboid are truly a good antagonist, with slightly more than a predator's cunning to foil the heroes, and you get a riveting monster story!

    I love the Tremors film series so much, they're such a glorious set of movies that started from some pretty humble beginnings, able to make an entire franchise off of the memorable characters and the monster despite being something that originally got some pretty middling returns. Even the sequels, even the newer ones that don't really have nearly as much of the quality of the originals, have something going for them: 2 and 3 add to the Graboid lifestyle in some fun and unique (if implausible) ways, and both give some more character moments for other characters from the series, Earl and especially Burt, naturally. 4 fields an interesting prequel style by giving it an even more rustic and Western flair than the series started with (and still adds to the lifecycle of the Graboids) while playing with expectations (and Michael Gross's acting skills) and still having plenty of character. Even 5 and 6 manage to do a little more with the character of the franchise's star in some ways, mostly in how his mannerisms combined with his age are affecting his life, and how intertwined he is with the Graboids in many different ways (including the meta ways). All while being some fun, silly and campy monster movies that mix just the right amount of having fun with themselves and still taking themselves a bit seriously.
    Just...a wonderful franchise, and I was so happy to hear you'd be reviewing something related to it, and that you're a fan of the series too! I'd been waiting all day to catch this!

    One thing that I love to point out about this movie is the proper handling of guns. In Burt's "Rec Room", guns are stored separate from their ammo (with the exception of the emergency flare gun).
    More tellingly, when Bert takes the revolver back from Melvin, even though he KNOWS he gave Melvin an unloaded gun, the first thing he does is open the cylinder and confirm that it is still unloaded.

    Fun fact there is actually a TV Show set post-Tremors 3-pre-Tremors 5 and it's actually good being one of the Syfy Channel's most popular shows during it's 1-season 13 episode run, most of the cast from Tremors 3: Back to Perfection returns reprising their roles including Michael Gross as Burt Gummer, with the new characters being Roslita a helper at the store, and Tyler Reed the new guy in town who becomes the secondary protagonist to Burt's lead hero role. And the show's premise is simple Burt and the others deal with various Graboid threats, man-made threats, and human villains while occasionally getting aid from the Nevada town's Graboid protector El Blanco.
    The show's recurring human villain is a greedy a-hole real-estate developer named Melvin Plugg a survivor of the OG attack in the first film who tries various schemes to buy Perfection and demolish the town to turn it into things like Condos, and a Gated Community basically places for rich people to live in however due to El Blanco and Graboids in general being consider a endangered species he can't legally buy the town and the land in order to demolish it so he tries various schemes in order to drive people out of the town, or force Burt to kill El Blanco himself and thankfully our group of protagonists including El Blanco are there to stop his schemes.

    This movie reminds me of Grabbers, a British-Irish monster film about a small island town in Ireland whose residents discover vampiric aliens that live on blood and water have arrived in their little hamlet. The aliens' weakness? Alcohol (because it's Ireland, of course). This was a more comedic monster movie but had a lot of similarities to Tremors from what I could see. Rational detective work by the leads (small town police), actual planning in how to defend the townspeople and defeat the aliens, and the only times the characters ever do anything stupid is because they're drunk!

    The first movie is the best, absolutely LOVE it! But their is a lot of entertainment value in the rest of the franchise as well, even the most recent two. I think the key is that they never take themselves too seriously, but still try to make the graboids and the situation surrounding their attacks believable. Burt Gummer is arguably one of the best characters, and I love how he is always shown using proper gun safety in every scene and scolding everyone else who isn't treating a weapon with respect. Which is also ironic considering Michael Gross' real life position on the issue.
