  • Madam Liuqing 柳青娘 is one of the representative compositions of Chaozhou zheng, a traditional instrumental genre from Eastern Guangdong Province, southern China. Chaozhou culture and music have deep roots in ancient Chinese music. “Lively Five” 活五 mode is one of five modes of Chaozhou music, and it is considered the most sophisticated mode to play by Chaozhou musicians, as the musician uses many left-hand techniques (bending, vibrato, glide, etc.) to create constant and vibrant “moving tones.” This recording is performed on an 18 steel-string zheng.
Gao Baijian is a hereditary master zheng performer. His father, Gao Zherui 高哲睿 (1920-1980), was a well-known zheng artist and scholar.

Great performance, such control over the bends! Zheng is such a versatile instrument, I just love the sound of it and the amount of musical possibilities it has.
