I think people who say Reese Witherspoon didnt deserve her Oscar just don't like the idea of young, pretty actresses from comedy background winning awards against older, more-experienced dramatic actresses, no matter how great the performance was.

movingonandup773 you’re wrong because Reese herself said Joaquin was a great guy and Joaquin said the same about her. And they had problems with each other when they rehearsed for Walk the line but that was because of the intense pressure put on them to portray Johnny Cash and June Carter to perfection. However as they got better with their singing and instrument playing they got along perfectly. By the time filming started, they were already good friends with each other and still are to this day. Ronnie Bishop Yeah I know that. Classic oscar-baiting stuff! I find it tiresome. Those biopics are rarely riveting. And what they're awarding someone for is the best _impersonation._ Not necessarily the best acting performance. And if you are the right physical type, you're half way there before you begin. However watching Michael Douglas as Liberace on the 'Behind the Candelabra' thing, I thought it was a real shame he wasn't eligible for an Academy ward (just the Emmy). Because he entertained the fuck out of me. He was an absolute scream and at the same time managed to move me towards the end. Ditto Matt Damon.

I get where you’re coming from. Reese Witherspoon’s role in “Walk The Line” definitely borders between a lead and supporting role since her screen time in the movie was about half of Joaquin Phoenix’s. But I still would consider her role as a lead because she still had a significant amount of screen time and the movie would not work without her character since the main story was less about Johnny Cash’s life and more about the love story between Johnny and June.

The Academy prefers American citizens and swearing and shouting to solidity and depth. When I watched Pride & Prejudice, I totally forgot that Keira Knightley was playing the role of Elizabeth. She was BEING Elizabeth. She put her heart and soul there and delivered such a solid performance with so much depth. She should have been named Elizabeth.
This also explains Melissa Leo winning over Helena Bonham Carter in 2011 and also the recent nomination for Jennifer Lawrence. Her portrayal was no different than the one on Silver Linings Playbook. Also Natalie won an Oscar for portraying an troubled ballerina (totally deserved) while Keira didn't even get a nomination for Anna Karenina, a role she also played with such intensity that it was impossible to think that she was acting. Keira totally deserved the award for Pride & Prejudice for not playing but for being the role.
Don't know how Felicity did. Gotta watch Transamerica.

As sad as it sounds I guess in 2006 the Oscars and the media, in general, weren't yet ready to fully embrace these topics like we have now, I mean I agree with you, Felicity's performance was amazing and I'm sad she didn't get recognized for her role way more like she deserved, but at the same time, I'm happy the society acknowledges now the REAL problems that transgender people have to deal and live day to day, we might live in Trump era right now but we are no coming back to shame and hiding times, world is finally becoming (one step at time) in a safer place for LGBTQ+ folks.

Felicity Huffman was without a doubt my vote for this award, her performance in Transamerica was an outstanding, brave performance which, in my opinion, couldn't have been pulled off with the same courage and sheer beauty by any other actress, she is one of the greatest actresses of her generation, in my opinion. I have all the respect for the other actresses who were nominated and each of then deserve recognition for their performances but Huffman's performance will go down in history for me.
