1:45 This LNER A3 Pacific Steam Locomotive Is A Bit Like Flying Scotsman And Gordon The Big Engine From Thomas The Tank Engine And Friends The Original Series In 1984. Thanks Sam'sTrains Mate. X
I think the V2's used to pull sometimes mail trains but mainly fish trains, that's why Green Arrow (4771) was called Green Arrow, she was named after one of the fast fish trains that she pulled, well that's what I got from Chris Eden Green's SLIPS. Sorry if my english is not perfect 'cause im not a native speaker
Fine end to this series. I read that braking technology was improved by Gresley too (had never occurred to me before). A topic for one of your future researches might be something like this. Not sure how many would be interested though. Alan.
Thanks very much Alan, interesting about the braking technology (It's certainly interesting to me!) I didn't know anything about that either, I'll read up on that then, see if there's a video to be made there! All the best mate, Sam :)
Wow...what a history class..always great presentations..with model railways, derailments can be avoided by placing a straight after a points..this stops the rotational axis which leads to derailments.
Trainspotter Of Zoetermeer much to the resentment of the crews apparently...the 2-8-2 configuration really wasn't suited to the rather unforgiving lines up north...
haha! Thanks very much Keith, really glad to have your support - got lots coming up next, I'll probably carry on with the 'Seven ages of steam' stuff! All the best mate, Sam :)
Definately the A4's my top 3 would be UOSA 60009,Bittern 60019 & Sir Nigel Gresley 60007 plus a mention for my old favourite Kingfisher 60024.Most enjoyable video
14:14 is that your only loco with sound? Do any of your other locos have DCC but no sound? 16:09 the Prince of Wales new build P2 now has a completed smokebox, and they're doing work on the drive wheels. 17:23 do you have a model Mallard in LNER blue? 22:32 you said 4471, when it's actually 4771!
Hi again - no I do have a few other sound locos: A4, Class 8, 4F and a Class 40! That's good news regarding the P2 - it will be amazing to see one of those in steam again! Yes I do have a Mallard in blue, though it's a Wrenn one! My apologies if I made a mistake there - but thanks for pulling that up! All the best, Sam :)
My favourite loco in that video was the V2 because in fact I have one but my one has a road number of 60964 and has a name of The Durham Light Infantry.
Sam I have a question if you want to build another gresley's class A3s pacific like flying Scotsman which is a cool names and numbers and difference livery your choice?
Great vid Sam, but one correction. Gresley's A1/A3 was not Britain's first pacific, that was Churchwards No111 Great Bear of 1908 on the GWR. As a GWR nut I can't have Mr Gresley stealing the thunder from Gods Wonderful Railway. ;) But that gripe aside, another wonderful vid. Keep up the good work mate :)
Hi Jon, thanks very much for that - you're fully correct though, what I meant to say was 'first class of pacifics', which I think would be okay, since the Great Bear was only one? Sorry about that anyway - I seem to be very good at mis-reading my info sheets lol! All the best mate, Sam :)
no worries mate Great Bear was hardly a major success, and they did only build one, although Hawksworth did a design study for a pacific in 1947, but th GWR never followed through with it, and when BR came along they built their own pacifics so Hawksworths idea was forgotten about
Hi again looking at Wikipedia Riddles designed the Austerity 2-8-0 and 2-10-0 during WW2. During his time at British Railways it seems the CME role changed and was shared a bit more with his two assistants Cox and Bond. He led the development of British Railways standard designs and they are usually credited to him. Hope I've got this right. Wiki has a good section on the standard designs. Anyone else add any more?
Hi Gareth, thanks very much for doing that, much appreciated, and very interesting! Always glad to get some new information, and I'll read up on it some more too! Thanks again mate, Sam :)
You did save the best for last Sam. I thoroughly enjoyed that. No favourites for me, I liked them all. I grew up on Br Eastern (WCML) and so most of these were every day sitings for me. Keep up the good work Sam. Thanks, David.
Hi David, thanks very much for that - yeah it's not easy to decide haha! It must have been great to see these in their heyday, I don't think it's quite the same today sadly :( All the best mate, Sam :)
Hi! I have one or two pieces of 2nd radius on my layout, and it never seems to mind them - though you'll really want to keep her speed down, otherwise you may get her de-railing! It's not ideal by any means, but yeah I think you'd get away with it! All the best, Sam :)
Sam- Great series of videos! Out of the Gresley-designed locomotives, although I do love the A3 and A4, the 4-4-0 he designed just edges them out for me. I love those!
Hi Ed, you're absolutely right, the 4-4-0 is absolutely gorgeous, and I was searching for a decent one of those for a long time! Thanks very much for the comment, Cheers, Sam :)
I'm going to have to find a British 4-4-0 soon for my layout to run as well! I have plenty of American ones, but that type of locomotive went out of style when the Atlantic and Pacific types took hold. The UK had apparently been building and running that type for a good bit longer than in the US!
How much did you have to pay Lewis Hamilton to drive the Mallard? I have only just seen how old some of these videos are. Anything LNER is good enough for me. Thanks, Sam. Martin (Thailand)
Thanks Gareth, really glad to have your support! Absolutely, I'd love to do a video with his locomotives - though I can't find a list of the ones he designed, If I find that I have at least 6 of his locomotives, I can definitely do that! All the best mate, Sam :)
I have watched a couple of your video's now, and I must say, normally HO trains arn't my cup of tea ( Well my Whole cup is running over lately...need to cut down on my hobbies) I was just wondering why you have so few Continental trains? Things like the Br01 etc, Is it a British pride thing or you do not like the look of continental trains? Becaus eI for one would love to see you doing a review on lets say the Henschel Wegmann Zug,Goldenarrow,,Mikado 141 to name a few.
Hi there, thanks very much for the comment! I don't have anything against continental trains at all, it's just that they're not readily available in the UK compared with British ones! I buy mostly Hornby and Bachmann Branchline, which mostly are British locomotives! All the best, Sam :)
hi...what a great series Sam well done. great to see the A4 flying around the track. as she should be. looking forward to seeing another type of series. they are a good concept. cheers matt.
Thanks very much for the kind words Matt, much appreciated, yeah that A4 is a stunner! The next series (per-se) will be around Christmas, but I've got lots more different kinds of videos to come before then! All the best, Sam :)
+Sam'sTrains sounds great Sam. I'm planing my own series soon hopefully it will work. I've also given you another mention on my channel in my latest video . hope you enjoy cheers matt
Ah right! Thanks for the info - I was going to say that the A3s were the first class, rather than a single loco - but yeah it looks like those A2s were first! Sorry about that! All the best, Sam :)
Hi no problem - not stupid at all! You either need more than one track + multiple controllers, or use a DCC system which allows you to control many locomotives on the same track! All the best, Sam :)
Yes... sadly No. 4469 Gadwall was destroyed in WW2 in 1942 in an air raid at York... how unfortunate...(btw Gadwall had the name Sir Ralph Wedgewood by 1939)
+Sam'sTrains i don't think so it is after all a easy mistake to make after al nearly all gresley locomotives have similar numbers i mean just look the n2 (lner number) is 4744 flying scotsman 4472 green arrow 4771 mallard 4468 union of south africa 4488 and sir nigel gresley 4498
haha damn! Pulled me up on that one! What I was meant to say was the first Class of pacifics, i.e. more than one, but I obviously decided to improvise... so naturally got it completely wrong! lol
Do you mean the br Scotsman or LNER flying Scotsman? Well if it’s in lner or br flying Scotsman that’s my fav engine in the would wait no acutely wait my fav engine is daylight aka 4449 in orange red and black and my second fav engine is mallard
The A3 is not the first pacific, because Churchward designed his 4-6-2 Great Bear in 1908, but it was later rebuilt into a castle class in 1922 because it had a lot of problems
Hi! Yeah you're absolutely right - I got that wrong, I meant to say the first class of pacific, since the great bear was just a single loco! Thanks for the info mate, Sam :)
Thanks mate, much appreciated! Yeah I filmed the 1920s episode last week! Blimey, what made you decide that?! But thanks very much anyway! All the best, Sam :)
Well, I love Gresley's locomotives (Just like you,) so this running session gave me the idea of a quadruple header, just bear in mind you don't need to do this. - Back - Locos: 1. Tornado (green) 2. Cock o the North 3.The Flying Scotsman (smoke deflectors) 4. Mallard (green) Coaches: 1. The coaches that came with 14xx 2. 14 LNER coaches 3. 18 LMS coaches Arrangement: 14xx coach 1 LMS 2 LNER 3 LMS 2 LNER 3 LMS 2 LNER 3 LMS 2 LNER 3 LMS 2 LNER 3 LMS 2 LNER 3 LMS 2 LNER 1 LMS 14xx coach Loco Arrangement: All locos in front of coaches Tornado Cock Scotsman Mallard - Front - And that's it, thank you if you can, and it's ok if you can't, anyways nice video!
Great video Sam I've really enjoyed this series its been packed with fantastic models and information! (Christmas is coming!) Cock of the North followed by the Mallard for me. Oscar
Thanks very much Oscar - really glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for all your support! Yeah Christmas is on it's way, can't wait lol! Yeah Cock o the north is a real classic - I'm thinking of getting a replacement motor for her, which should be a bit smoother! All the best mate, Sam :)
Thanks sam for this awesome series. I have an idea for maybe a future series on were you so us how to build a model railway or something like that. Thanks
Hi there, thanks very much for the kind comment - that's a very good idea, I might do that - I'm thinking of making a video on getting started with a collection! Cheers, Sam :)
Hi Sam I Know that this comment is 4 years Late .but please may you do a video of your beyer garratt pulling all of the OCEAN wagons you own. P.S cheers mate 👍 Cheers . Lewis : )
17:07 Great Scott. It's Mallard. This LNER A4 Pacific Steam Locomotive Is A Bit Like Spencer From Thomas The Tank Engine And Friends. Thanks Sam'sTrains Mate. X

Yes that's absolutely right Luke! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Slight correction, the A1 GNR Pacific was the first successful 4-6-2 Loco in Britain, the GWR Great Bear was the first pacific locomotive in Britain
the Victorian mindset of requiring things to be aesthetically pleasing. thanks Sam.
roy

lovely video :) loved seeing the cock o the north again one of my favourites :) all the best
also I heard the a4s did some freight work towards the end of the end of steam not sure for sure though :)
Is that a joke
Wow...what a history class..always great presentations..with model railways, derailments can be avoided by placing a straight after a points..this stops the rotational axis which leads to derailments.
Thanks so much David, glad you liked it! Yes that is true, though not always possible!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
hey Sam um little fact Britains first pacific was a GWR loco named The Great Bear which was later rebuilt into a castle
Thanks Aaron - that's absolutely right - but that was just a single loco - the first class of pacifics was the A1! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
The P2s where used on the Sleepingcar trains between Aberdeen and Edinbourough
Ahh okay - that makes sense! Thanks a lot for the comment,
Sam :)
Trainspotter Of Zoetermeer much to the resentment of the crews apparently...the 2-8-2 configuration really wasn't suited to the rather unforgiving lines up north...
He wasn't bad was he, ha ha. Seriously, a great series, really enjoyed it. Looking forward to whatever is next.
haha! Thanks very much Keith, really glad to have your support - got lots coming up next, I'll probably carry on with the 'Seven ages of steam' stuff!

Not trying to be rude or anything, but putting “!” Kind of sounds harsh when you think about it.
My favourite loco in that video was the V2 because in fact I have one but my one has a road number of 60964 and has a name of The Durham Light Infantry.
Ooh great choice - yes the V2 is very lovely indeed!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The Worldrecord A3 holder was "Papyrus" 108mph
Ahh okay Robert, thanks for this! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
22:32 Green Arrow is 4771.I often do that mistake
Ah right yeah - sorry about that! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Fantastic Sam
Thanks Malcolm! ;D
Beautiful all around there...
Thanks Glenn! :D
The v2 wasn't the last gresley design. The last gresley was a v4 built in 1941 right before his death
Very interesting! I've never heard that before! :O
Happy New Year,
Sam :)
Gresley's grandsons stil live today. They are helping building the p2
Really?! Wow, I didn't know that- that's pretty cool!
All the best,
Sam :)
You have nice collection =-O
Thank you so much!! :D
Merry Christmas - Sam :)
I'm sorry to say Sam but the gwr had the first Pacific called the great bear from 1901 I think, but I'm not sure. Great vid, Lewis
That's right, but it wasn't a class of pacifics, it was a single unit! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Super looking trains !
Thanks Michael! :D
I noticed a little running gag in these videos. The cow on the lowmac. What is the story behind that?
Haha yeah - the cows a paint to be honest, I try to keep him off the lines, but he just insists on getting in the shot :/
All the best,
Sam :)
Sam I have a question if you want to build another gresley's class A3s pacific like flying Scotsman which is a cool names and numbers and difference livery your choice?
Ooh that’s such a cool idea - you’ve got me thinking now!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Thanks a lot! Yeah those LNER locos are beautiful!
All the best,

When did you get the LNER sleeping car from?
I think that one came from Ebay!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi sam it's a random question but can DCC locos work on DC power
Most of them can, yes, though it may need to be enabled on the decoder first!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
How much did you have to pay Lewis Hamilton to drive the Mallard? I have only just seen how old some of these videos are. Anything LNER is good enough for me. Thanks, Sam. Martin (Thailand)
haha!! Glad to hear that - you can't beat the LNER! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Excellent series really enjoyed it. Riddles postscript sometime?
Thanks Gareth, really glad to have your support! Absolutely, I'd love to do a video with his locomotives - though I can't find a list of the ones he designed, If I find that I have at least 6 of his locomotives, I can definitely do that!

What about the V1/V3 Tank Engines?
Yeah, they would have been good to include too! I couldn't show all of them though, since there were loads! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Wasn't Papyrus the loco that set the record? Not Scotsman?
You might be right there actually - I'm not absolutely certain!
Cheers,
Sam :)
actually the a3 were the 3rd pacific on britain the gwr 111 the great bear was the first and the lner raven a2 was the second
Ah right! Thanks for the info - I was going to say that the A3s were the first class, rather than a single loco - but yeah it looks like those A2s were first! Sorry about that!
All the best,
Sam :)
+Sam'sTrains all the best for you as well
How do you get more trains to run a the same time?I know it's stupid sorry.ps love your vids.
Hi no problem - not stupid at all! You either need more than one track + multiple controllers, or use a DCC system which allows you to control many locomotives on the same track!
All the best,
Sam :)
Thanks
so bullman is also a banker incase trains come to a hault?
haha yeah I guess so, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Y have u forgot about William Stoudley, William Dean, Tompson and G J Churchwood?
I haven't forgotten him!! I just don't have many Stroudley engines! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks for choosing the BR Green for Mallard, my favoutite livery, even suits a Class 66! Awesome video!
No problem mate! Yeah that's true - it's a real classic livery!
Thanks very much for the comment and kind words,
Sam :)

Yes... sadly No. 4469 Gadwall was destroyed in WW2 in 1942 in an air raid at York... how unfortunate...(btw Gadwall had the name Sir Ralph Wedgewood by 1939)
It was indeed - very sad :(
5:10 Grandad loved these whilst he was working on them in the '50s and '60s! :)
Oh yeah I bet! I've read that they were well appreciated by their crews!
Sam, do you reply to comments from older videos?
Yeah I do!! :D
Sam'sTrains respect man, not everyone does that
hey Sam do you think gresly would be proud or disappointed of 60103 flying Scotsman love to hear your thoughts :-)
Hmm, not sure mate - I bet he'd be proud that so many people still love it after all this time though!
All the best,
Sam :)
+Sam'sTrains nice thx for replying means a lot p.s I'm your biggest fan :-)
Sam'sTrains I love u
That trasition was amazing
please run the B12 more often
I agree - I ought to really!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Next one could be of Oliver bullied
green arrow's number is 4771 not 4471 the number 4471 is from the a3 sir frederick banbury
haha yeah I know - I've no idea why I got that wrong - probably my bad eyesight! Thanks for the correction though! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hey Sam why did people hated Thompson?
Because he meddled with Gresley's beloved designs! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
3:49 Not quite. ;) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GWR_111_The_Great_Bear
haha damn! Pulled me up on that one! What I was meant to say was the first Class of pacifics, i.e. more than one, but I obviously decided to improvise... so naturally got it completely wrong! lol
Gresley's designs were matchless. Except for maybe Stanier.
haha absolutely! Yeah Stanier was great too, you're right!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
sam tell ME where get this train
Hi mate, which one are you thinking of getting??
All the best,
Sam :)
At 22:33 you made a little goof, you said 4471 when its 4771
Oh yeah so I did! Sorry about that - thanks for pointing that out to me! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
No Problem Mate 😉
wasn't the gwr No 111 great bear the first pacific to run in Britain
Yes you're right! But it wasn't a class I suppose, just a one off!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
love the flying Scotsman and the mallard and the jinty
Awesome! Yeah I love those ones too! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
Do you mean the br Scotsman or LNER flying Scotsman? Well if it’s in lner or br flying Scotsman that’s my fav engine in the would wait no acutely wait my fav engine is daylight aka 4449 in orange red and black and my second fav engine is mallard
Owwwww and then the jinty
the A1/A3 wasn't the first 4-6-2 in britian the gwr no 111 the great bear was
Yes that's true - but it was the first 'class' I suppose - because the great bear was just a single prototype loco!
All the best mate,
Sam :)
Great upload once again Sam...many thanks.
Thanks Kev, really glad you enjoyed it,
All the best,
Sam :)
Hi Sam just to say there is a game on iPad called trainz simulator 2 u can by lots of stuff and lots of maps
Tony: )
Hi Tony, thanks for that - I'll definitely give it a look! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)

Thanks mate, much appreciated! Yeah I filmed the 1920s episode last week! Blimey, what made you decide that?! But thanks very much anyway!
All the best,
Sam :)
I thought the V4 was Gresley's last engine.
You may be right - I'm not too sure! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Did the flying Scotsman beat 100 mph as an A1 or an A3
