  • In this video, I attempt to demonstrate how your speaker placement can affect soundstage and imaging. I perform a 3 use case demonstration by placing the speakers directly against the front wall, followed by 2 and 4.5 feet separation.
Steps I used for the demo:
    1. Recorded all tracks with the TASCAM DR-07 using 24bit 96k stereo wav format
    2. All system configurations remained identical during the test (except for speaker placement of course)
    3. Cropped the wav files using Audacity, adjusted the gain to ensure equal volume,
and exported as native 24bit 96k format
    4. Used the cropped wav files within Adobe Premier to make the video.

UA-cam audio dudes always talk about speaker placement but never actually do what you just did and SHOW people the effect it has. Bravo 👏

You need at least 34-35 inches from the wall to the front baffles. This greatly reduces reflection timing interference.

Great investigation!!! I do not think this has been performed before on You tube. Sadly, most people (including myself), can not place speakers more than 2 feet into the rear wall. Keep up the great work

Sometimes the best things in life are free. Like playing with speaker placement

Great video, I listened to this through my Bose noise canceling headphones and could definitely hear the difference, against the wall really kills the details in the music

Please read the full description before commenting. Also, I apologize in advance for the microphone issues while I was talking in this video. I'll be sure to figure that out before the next one.
Some additional notes not covered by video. Speaker height is also very important. Read your speaker manual for proper height. Most times, you'll want your ear to be aligned between the tweeter and mid-range.
As you move your speakers away from the front wall, there will be a point where you start to lose focus. You will also lose bass response. It's a fine line as to how far you'll be able to pull them away from the wall.

I prefer the 2 feet distance

Thank You kindly for sharing with us all your observations...I have very similar conclusions regarding this subject..
I drive my ProAc Studio monitors with the SET valve amp. ...at the 4.5 feet distance from the front wall and almost 3 feet from the side walls with toeing some 15 ° as well.
Please be so kind to view Tarun's sugestions as well, at the Britishaudiophile Yu tube portal.
    Best regards!

Great video. Speaker placement plays a huge role in SQ. The room itself also makes a big difference. Even very inexpensive stereos and speakers can benefit greatly from speaker placement. Can you tell us the room dimensions of your listening space? Is your listening position (in this case, the mic) moving back equally as your speakers are brought forward, in order to keep a proper triangle? You mentioned making volume adjustments, but I don't remember if the mic was moved. And one last question... how did you determine the location of the diffusor panels on the front wall? Was it a trial/error process... did you use math or mirrors... maybe some testing equipment? I have been slowly building my listening room, and I think I am at the point where room dressing needs to be considered, but there's very little out there regarding formulas for best initial placement, and I want to avoid moving panels and clouds repeatedly until it's correct. Just wondering if you have cool tricks for locating them. Thanks again for taking the time to show us these results.

I thought 2ft sounded waaay better than 0 but I think at 4,5ft it lost some bass deept but it was clearer and airier. I would probably have stopped at 3,5ft. How would the test be if you did the same test but also keept the same distans to the mic? If it's even possible then the only differens would be the distance to the wall. Thanks 4 a killer video

Your observations are accurate. The further away from the front wall will yield lower bass response. I am fortunate that I have my sub bass separate from my midrange and treble. If the sub bass was in the same cabinet I would in no way be able to pull them that far into the room. You can also push the speakers toward the side walls to increase bass response. Remember that the recorded sound is different than in the room. I find 4.5 feet just fine for my current system. I do plan on changing my speakers out, starting with some custom open baffle subs later this year. Stay tuned. Peace and happy listening.

@@TimbreDynamics Thank you for your answear. I've just got back into hifi again and wow how much I have forgotten. But now I have the exciting privilege of learning it again from awesome people like you. My comment was really more of a poorly worded question and observation. English isn't my first language. I will follow your chanel closely. You are doing a amazing job of explaining your tests and findings and I like that you give people the opportunity to experince this with you.

How the variation of the listening distance (speakers - listener) may bias this test?

2g vs like 500 dollar speakers. The 500 dollar speakers stand up better after the show room sparkle fades. These real life demos are important for perspective
