Tbh both Levy and Hikaru did pretty poorly on this one. How neither of them recognised those 1300s who kept missing basic tactics like forks, pins, and discoveries, and just overall kept shuffling pieces about with no intent whatsoever; or how both failed to pick up on starkingly obvious displays of understanding such as fianchettoing the bishop, finding pins, doubling the rooks on an open file, etc in that 1000 game; or how they were both oblivious to that 1500's overtly (relatively) high-level ideas such as restricting the opponent's most dangerous piece, opening up the position while the opponent's king is still in the centre, as well White's constant awareness of tactics such as pins and discoveries; is, frankly, beyond me. I wouldn't say that Levy ended Hikaru's elo-guessing career. More like Hikaru ended his own elo-guessing career tbh as he had an absolute shocker of a guessing spree (especially those completely inexplicable 1950, 2100, and 900 guesses).

Some of them I bet would even confuse Tal. btw the position at 3:48 yes you want to play Ke3 or Kg3 but due to the related squares principle Kf3 puts your K on a square from which you can play either Ke3 or Kg3 depending on black's move. If you cut off the guesses with are more than 200 points away (which makes sense, because the opponents are also just 200 points away from each other) levy wins with 5:0 and Hikaru has one guess in range only. =D

25:50 I feel as though lower-rated players have gotten much better at chess recently. I'm legit only elo 996 and I've played a few full games where neither me nor my opponent blunders

This is easier for Levy because he just has to think who better than him in chess in these videos. Sometimes, a weak player can make some incredible GM moves for a few moves and then fall apart.

26:46 black made white appear to be a above 1362 player, black created white good moves and white is very creative soo xD, guess thats what B Fischer was refering to, that at lower elo you enjoy more chess games and at higher elo is just memory practice.

lol at 25:38! this is an older video so Hikaru probably wont see this comment, but yes there are new players that do listen to what you chess pros say & apply it correctly. Hikaru & Judit & Maurice & Finegold & Krush & Kasparov & Carlsen & Levy teach about chess principles, etc. but the new player just may still have a lower rating just due to not playing too frequently or some other reason.

This video Kinda ensures me that Hikaru ,,has no idea what real mistake is,, - according to his comments during his own games (having 99,7% accuracy instead of 99,8% = blundered and played terrible). Levy is less in the clouds so he has more accurate guessing and no overthinking. Grats levy on winning :)

  • @jamesdeanzbeans

I feel like sometimes they forget that their are people in the world that don't play chess very often that can naturally be 1800 in a month or 2 so the 1300 rating makes sense if the person is gifted.
