Why Did SRV Use These Unusual Pickups?

- It's always interesting to try the less obvious pickups. Today I have some lipstick pickups to try. But rather than in a Danelectro as you might expect, these are in a Strat - something SRV used to do sometimes. Let's see how they compare to standard strat pickups.

The SRV guitar known as Charley had real danelectro pickups, it was built that way and was a gift to him. His brother Jimmy loved it so much he ended up with one just like it. I built one with lipsticks because of Charley’s warm, clear tone. My favorite combo was a crazy moment of eBay buying of gretsch trons with a Wilkinson middle. It’s neat
Tele neck pickup, gold foils, and ‘57 classics are my fav aside from my Strat with custom wiring.
Those pickups came in a Charley guitar built for him in Texas by Charlie. That's why
The original 1954 Danelectro Lipstick Tubes used an Alnico 6 magnet that had some titanium alloy in it. Duncan uses typical common Alnico 5 used in a lot of their pickups, so it’s different in tone. IF You listen well, You’d discover that Jimmy Page used his Danelectro 59 on Stairway to Heaven unmistakable Lipstick Tube tone with that unusual jangle-chime that other single coils don’t have. .
These are close to what he had but the ones he had was alot wider cause they were actually out of a danelectro these now you get are strat size. I love lipstick pickups and people are sleeping on them cause they think that they have a surf sound but they really don't. They just sound amazing and better than most normal strat pickups you can buy at the same price. Even the cheap ones that are Ceramic sound freaking amazing. SRV had Chandler lipstick pickups in the Charley guitar .
I have a Danelectro ‘84 they made a few years ago, which is a nod to the strat he used around 84 with lipstick pickups. Just a different and cool sound for a strat. And I agree they have more tele than typical strat single coil sound. Clarity but less glassy. But either way they sound great and it’s something different.
I just acquired a Dano 84 in a trade. There’s almost no information about them. Anything you can share?
He also had some Bill Lawrence pickups, I think with S.R.V. it was whatever floats his boat at the time he heard or tried lol

Great sounds and playing. Never played these pickups. Other pickups meaning other than the usual single coils and buckets? I love P90’s but that’s pretty standard. I do miss my Filtertron Thinline Tele.
Built up a Carlo Robelli maple bd.with 3 from a Coral Star sitar thingy in the 80s

Well different single coils are fun .As long as they sound good ,these lipsticks sound different and good.I have experanced mex. Strat and tele pickups that had no hope .I think fender does that to force you to buy thier after market pickups,They should do better! But then again why buy a tele pickup from fender? Seymour Duncan knows mo re than fender about pickups .Then a brand that i was impressed with is Tonerider ,They make a wonderful tele pickup at 95 bucks a set.
