With everything happening in the world today, late night talk show hosts like Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert have not been able to record their shows in front of live audiences like normal. Instead they have pretty much become UA-camrs - setting up cameras in their house to talk to and getting their families to participate as a stand in for crew members and famous guests. Now, I give them credit for trying to adjust and keep making content how they can, but come on. These hosts do NOT know how to UA-cam. What do I mean? Listen up Theorists and welcome to This Time Today with MatPat.

Do you remember when Jimmy Kimmel went on a rant about how UA-camr's weren't actual entertainers, and were the lowest form of entertainment? While I do, and man do those words taste good now eh Kimmel.
I could be wrong but wasn't he interviewing lilly singh when he said that, and then she went on to be a late night host lol.
That MIGHT have been one of the reasons I'm a bit saltier in this video than normal ;)

Conan did an episode without celebrities and interviewed his staff instead and it got way more views than any other celebrities
I'm not surprised, Conan's staffers are epic, the remotes he used to do with them were like episodes of the office
Yeah his remotes were always better than his regular show in my opinion, I don’t really care about him interviewing random celebrities, even the ones I do like, when his staffers are way funnier and more interesting
Conan is literally my favorite of all these hosts

Reasons why most folks watch certain shows :
- Fallon: mostly for the guest actors and related segments...not for Fallon himself.
- Kimmel: same as above + pedestrian questions + unnecessary censorship
- Colbert: political topics (not much going on during the pandemic, nobody wants to listen to the same news rehashed)
- Conan: for Conan himself...
- Trevor: for the messages he deliver...
Yeah, out of all of them Colbert is easily the worst.

You feeling it now Mr. Kimmel.
Film theory: "starring: generic image of a man, generic image of a woman, and 2D cutout vaguely animated to have emotion"
Me: (bursts out laughing) "It's so on the nose it's hilarious"
It’s hilarious how these celebs are so out of touch, they literally think the worse their “home studio” versions of their shows look, the more “authentic” they are. Meanwhile youtubers are filming on 8K RED Cinema cameras
or you have guys like gav and dan from theslomoguys, where they're filming on a million dollar slow motion camera that gavin has used professionally to film for movies and television shows, and then they drop glitter on it and go at bottles with swords nearby.
it's the attitude, not the environment and equipment, that makes you authentic.
What really got me was when they first started filming at home, they were using earbud mics or the webcam mics. I'm like are fucking kidding me! You people have worked in television for decades; you know how important sound quality is. These guys are millionaires yet couldn't be bothered to get a halfway decent microphone from Bestbuy or Target.
For all who discourage for "To start UA-cam, you need expensive equipment" idea, don't be. Start slow, do with what you have first. Your phone might has decent recording quality so it's a good start. Then, most of it come from you. You'll the one make it success. Qxir is one of example that start slow and with talent, personality and importantly, dedication and time, you can be successful.
Almost seems like Trevor Noah has just been waiting for his chance to become a youtuber lol
He is the most unfunny "comedian" ever.
Stop the Philosophical Zombies he can be humorous sometimes

Lol
@Sebastian says the person judging peoples' tastes
okay but John Oliver hasn't changed his style, and he's still my favorite show even if hes not a daily show
Yeah, but his format actually follows Da Rules of UA-cam Format.
Actually he has in small ways, but his original style was so appealing because he was the most video essay-like in the bunch. All he really had to change is his pace of delivery.
Besides, he isn't really a late night show, he's more of an opinion oriented video essayist
I think LastWeekTonight with John Oliver works perfectly during quarantine, if even better than before.
It is still satirical, but the focus is on the topic and more complex jokes, than on entertaining the live audience
yesss someone said it 🙌🏻
I couldn’t agree more! Although I do love the antics like Jeff the Diseased Lung which can only be done in person!
I think part of the reason it works is because John Oliver has such a rapid-fire style of comedy. MatPat raised a point about the awkward silences when hosts pause for laughs; Oliver has never really done that. Even when he has an audience, he barely gives them a moment to laugh before moving on to the next thing, so his at-home comedy honestly feels much more natural than his audience comedy.
Talk show hosts before : youtubers bad

kinda sour that you included Conan when you were roasting the Late Night format. Conan's show is Late Night but it's not generic or conventional like the other ones. It's fresh. Conan actually seems like he's a part of his team rather than just supported by his team. He seems like he's always there in the moment unlike both of the Jimmys. You know it's bad when MatPat has to lecture you on how not to be cringy 😏
Alternate Title: How to be a UA-camr with MatPat
Something else to note: most vloggers are relaxed enough to laugh at their own jokes regardless of how funny they are. Late night shows rely on the writing being funny and the audience reacting, so the hosts play it straight in order to hammer in all the jokes through the audience laughter
Contagious laughter is HUGE. I can't count the number of times I wouldn't have laughed at a joke if the UA-camr hadn't laughed at it himself. Especially that sort of nervous laughter that comes from knowing you just made a stupid joke and you have to laugh at yourself just for the pure dorkdom of it all. It's adorable.
That’s why vloggers are doing so much better

@@D0Y0u3v3r woah this comment is over a year old thanks for reminding me
he should've talked about patriot act, Hassan Minhaj is the talk show host that did it right
Its also much simpler than that. Their Late Night shows were SHOWS. It was about the SHOW, the spectacle, the production. Comedy was an ingredient, not a product. Without the show, their jokes are bland, odd. Without the act, its just bad entertainment. Goes to show how much of their audience actually watched them for them, not the 40 man crew behind the curtains.
The only barely surprising thing here is that they are so unaware of this. Not to mention some of them really deserve the humility.
this, that's why their names are so important.
And I'd argue that's part of why Trevor is doing so well, because he was doing stand-up long before he started hosting the show. Heck, even as the host, some of the most well-liked parts of the show by the audience are the "between the scenes" segments where he just chats and jokes around with the audience without a script.
Comedy comes naturally to him, so transitioning from the more stiff, scripted nature of the regular show to the at-home version is probably less of a challenge to him than to the others (also, being notably younger and more in touch with internet audiences and the like probably helps too 🤭).
Conan got a lot of his popularity from actually leaving his studio and acting like an actual human being. His videos where he went to different locations and cultural backgrounds showed that it wasn’t his writing staff that wrote his jokes, but that he was actually funny.
Beautifully put. People go on UA-cam because they want to see something more real, less polished, UA-cam-friends that are more like them. Pewdiepie for example is a lot more relatable than a rich man in a suit that reads a script. If you watch Pewdiepie multipe days a week it‘s like chatting with a friend, which feels better in lockdown times than shows..

While late night shows may be aware that adapting UA-cam aesthetics may give them a short term bump in viewership and relative quality, I think network concern is protecting their hosts image/brand as being superior to the youtube-style. If these productions were to embrace youtube style delivery, the shared visual language would legitimize the standing of youtube channels. Ultimately, broadcast networks prefer to preserve the hierarchy that keeps them in power.
One show I loved watching while in quarantine was Task Master. They did at home stuff, and people submitted clips of them completing the tasks, and honestly… it made me smile. I liked watching it with my family, it felt genuine, like they were trying their best. And it felt like the hosts were raw, honest, and well done. And Russel Howard, he was funny, and knew how to make fun of his making jokes to an almost empty auditorium. I liked it, he knew how to present his situation as alien as it felt, yet still kept his comedy as it was.

I have another theory, why Trevor Noah is doing so well right now:
1.Trevors jokes are light hearted Millenialhumour and he often includes stuff from his private life, which many UA-camrs do.
2. Trevor is 36 which makes him the youngest of the hosts, and part of the generation, who uses UA-cam a lot, so he probably knows, what kind of production and joke telling people are used to.

The pauses are habit at this point, I'm sure they're trying to break them as they go.
Have they tried hiring an editor? Editors make quick work of awkward pauses, just saying.
It is habit, and I think Seth Meyers especially has fixed that and has had an editor edit out any dead space that might occur out of habit. Also, on that Meyers clip at 6:50 MatPat literally paused the video right after the joke to exaggerate his point. I know there was a pause, but there's no need to get hyperbolic when everyone already agrees with you over something small and fixable that was fixed.
Big doubt
It's part of how they were trained as comedians. You have to pause for the laughter so you don't step over it with another joke. I can't fault them, since they have to learn comedy for an entirely new medium. Trevor was always a quick-witted individual, so I'm not surprised he's picked up on how this works easier. He's also younger than most of the rest, so that helps.
Yeah, I think a good example of that is John Oliver. In his first no-audience show it was *really* awkward, but as he has continued to put out more videos, he is learning to not pause like that.
I've been dying for someone to do a video on this. even did my own at home late night skit lol
Now that he mentioned the expression thing, trying to copy the expressions as it's happening is fun as heck
Can I just say that IMO, Trevor Noah and John Oliver seemed to thrive in quarantine, with Noah adapting a UA-cam format, and John Oliver has adapted his usual format to make it almost more serious?
That sort of makes it worse.

i agree, those 2 i still watch the rest have the exact same news presented to cringy to watch
Those two are the only actually good late night hosts so I'm not surprised
John Oliver and Trevor Noah both would do more raw, BTS bits for web only so I think that's part of the reason they took so well to the new format. I like that the Daily Show still has bits with their correspondence members (Desi Lydek, Roy Wood Jr.)
I think one reason Noah got more viewers on YT is because he's younger than the rest and understands "our culture" more than the rest. idk though that's just what I think

Yeah, but he doesn't really use guests (those are very rare) and most of his show is a sort of video essay on why this (not so) obscure thing is important.
10:50 “so, you have a movie for me?”
“Yes sir, I do.”
Hey can you do one on Phineas and Ferb's backyard and how big it is
So what I’m getting is that all these hosts need a big dose of ICarly.
372 likes/dislikes and no comment? Well it's my time to shine, it seems. *Ahem* FIRST!
bboy138 yes they do...
But no Gibby or Neville
@@tffp_ But Gibby is the best part!

I just love that, according to him, Seth Meyers reached out because of this video. It means a lot when someone asks for help :)
I posit that Seth Meyers isn’t holding for laugh, he’s directly pointing out the awkwardness
One thing about all this quarantine business is that it really shows how unfunny late night show hosts can be without an audience being told when to laugh
The Gaming Decorator either they have funny jokes, or i have a crappy taste of humor. Oh well
Most people already knew this. Trevor is the worst imo and replaced the best guy who was John Stewart
Ever watch Big Bang Theory clips with the laugh tracks removed? Show it to a die hard fan and ask them to tell you it's funny.
@EbberDeeMills nah man, I just think Trevor is unfunny in general. Also dont get why people would want to watch a south african comment on american politics. He's turned a legit political satire show into a political joke lol
@@666slateran666 are we sure he turned politics into a joke, and that the world didnt do that on its own?
"Eliminate the host and his family" @9:38
That sounded awfully unintentionally dark.
EDIT: Holy crap, this comment got more likes in a shorter amount of time than my comment on Post Malone's Sunflower!
Hence the Thanos Snap on them!

You see the thing about Mat-Pat is he's so good and logical he gives you an existential crisis. Sooooo Good Job!
3:29 I’m just happy you put my Idol Margot Robbie in there. Thank you so much Matpat! :)
7:00 : Hey, I _need_ those pauses for laughter, because how else am I going to tell that it's a joke!?
It's not a pause for laughter, it's a pause to give people time to realize it's supposed to be a joke!
or maybe the hosts need that moment to scream internally and then carry on before they get an existential crisis
I love John Oliver’s show because of how unfazed he is by the lack of an audience
😂😂😂
Yea i agree, hes absolutely great
If anything it seems he likes it more 😂😂
I think that is because he isn't as addicted to a positive audience reaction as other hosts. To me it feels like he genuinely wants to get information across, making people laugh seems to be more like a bonus to him.
Because nothing changed.
Me hearing Trevor Noah is killing it: "Of course he is, he's in his 20's he's with the times"
Also me finding out he is 37 (36 at this point): "There's hope for me to become cool yet"
There is no a single late night show host funny as much as Graham Norton and Conan
Noah’s got a very young production staff. That’s why he’s doing better than most.
if only he had a better writing staff for his jokes
@Sylvester Banini THAT is probably why dave chapel is funnier, BECAUSE he doesnt have late night show, pretty much every comedian i like, arent very pc, and they either have their own comedy shows/specials, that are specific to them, meaning not pc or they just have their tours get aired but not really anythng like a talk show where it needs to be pc
Stewart was actually talking about the poor. It wasn't all glitter and false intentions like today's daily show and the public liked that. The ratings dropped substantially after Stewart's departure, and there is a reason for that.
Yeah, we all would love a DC Show but the alphabet ain’t gonna like it. Especially since he’s said some “interesting” things when did have a show.
He's also younger himself.
“Everything changed...” when the Fire Nation attacked. Dang Matpat, you missed it.
Don't you mean "when the Corona nation attacked?"
I said it out loud without even thinking when MatPat said that.
Everything changed when coronavirus spread
Hope there is a follow up video for how these now are doing. And if they improved around the year
Lilly !!!!
The one who's actually a UA-camr before a late night show host.
What matpat says: 64 years
What I a Minecraft player says:
A stack of years
You got a chuckle out of me, so you get a like out of me too.
*AND A STACK OF LIKES .*
Two! Two stacks! 🧛♂️ Ha'ah'ah!

If this was a tvshow plot, Mattpatt would assign a youtuber for each late-night host to show them the ropes and shenanigans would ensue...but like its not a bad idea..
I second the motion lol
I third that
:flushed:
This would actually be so entertaining to watch. They could even have a reality show about how they are organizing everything.
Who else thinks Trevor must do an episode with Mat Pat
I feel John Oliver would be better especially after the kind of things he has pulled off with people like Dalai lama, Edward snowden
Nah MatPat is way funnier because Trevor Noah sucks
@@protobuster12 You're joking right ?
