After years of twitter fraud, inflated user populations built of bots to deceive users and investors alike, and the now documented government censorship, these realities of Twiter have only recently come to light.
Keep in mind, UA-cam, Reddit, and Facebook were owned by the same conglomerates utilizing the same technology, meaning their current usership numbers are likely just as fraudulent and over-inflated as Twitter was, as the evidence seems to suggest is exactly the case.

If the average Avatar fan is anything like me, they've been quietly following the ever-postponed release dates for 13 years, quietly getting hyped, and are not shouting from the rooftops how they're going to go see it in cinemas - but they will definitely go. It's been too long to be loud, but I never stopped loving the setting, and I'm quite excited to see the new writing and tech in action!

It should kind of be obvious that Twitter isn't representative of most things. Not only is the userbase small, but the toxicity is so high that most users barely visit it nowadays. I was actually really excited for Snydercut but never rallied for it on Twitter. Conversely, I know many Twitter users who rallied for it but never watched it. With how small the active userbase already is, these kinds of factors play an even bigger role. That's just how it works

I work in a library and the circulation of TV shows on DVD is super interesting as it reveals what people are actually watching (admittedly probably skewed towards older folks who are more likely to use the library). I was shocked to find that by far the shows which circulate the most are Yellowstone and British murder mysteries. In comparison, almost nobody is checking out shows like game of thrones or stranger things, or even classics like the Simpsons, which all get a lot more attention on social media.

There's a couple factors at play here. First, not as many people have Paramount + as compared to HBO Max or Netflix. That means folks who don't are more likely to borrow from the library. Also, the medium you are talking about skews toward older audiences by default. Lots of younger people don't have/keep DVDs anymore. They are more likely to have either converted to Blue Ray, or just stream their movies/TV shows. Finally, Simpsons, and other long running shows get talked about because everyone can relate to them. Most people with access to western media know what those shows are about, even if they haven't watched in years/decades.

The interests of Gen X and Boomers are not represented at all and gives this false idea to some of those Twitter users that because it’s not spoken about it on Twitter it must not be popular at all. You also have to factor that twitter is also incredibly loaded with bots, and I've seen estimates as high as 80%. Dan Woods a well known security expert who's worked for both the CIA and FBI, has stated that it's very likely that upwards of 80% are bots. I've also seen extensive evidence of a particularly weird bot on twitter that will copy politically driven posts and repost them repeatedly.
I don't think that the aforementioned bot is to drive for one particular party, but to drive engagement; as it'll get more real users talking. I genuinely think that these types of bots are what's driving this movie thing talked about in the video. If a movie has politically charged themes (regardless of left/right direction), it will be driven into trending by these same bots. Where exactly these bots are from no one really knows, but I've seen evidence of this first hand; such as identical tweets word for word within seconds of each other being posted by different accounts.

Add to that online fandoms tendency to produce a large amount of tweets about one show and it makes sense when shows with larger online fandoms also trend on twitter more.
Also unlike some commenters, I don’t consider this to be twitter lying or as being a negative thing about twitter. Matpats video is just an example of how online spaces will always be representative of only the subsection of the world that actively uses the platform. "Just walked my dog on with a beautiful evening sunset!" "My wife and I having a wonderful vacation at Disneyworld!" etc. But now it's turned into a cesspool of political strife, excessive 18+ content, pronouns everywhere, NFT scams, hating others for having certain opinions, etc. It's now mostly used by politicians, corporations for outreach, political activists, cryptobro scammers, and deviants. Not the post-MySpace site for normal, everyday people to "chime in on what they're doing" like it started. It became a monster.

It confirms all of my suspicions about Twitter and the cesspool of very vocal self proclaimed "film experts" that reside there. I swear I never saw anyone complain so vehemently about movie posters in my life. There was also an insane amount of users that screamed "no one cares about Avatar" on every Avatar related tweet before Avatar 2 released and even beyond. As evidenced by the money the movie is making, a lot of people care, myself included. At this point I'm convinced that 99% of people on Twitter are just trolls and bots. it's not about Twitter being influential in any way. It's about the fact that Twitter has, before Elon got it, was used as a way for people in power, mainly the media, politicians, influencers, and people who have a voice get to talk about. And the Main flow of Twitter is very strongly US Democratic, even in other countries it's clear that Twitter was being used as a way to amplify things like racial representation. All Twitter is is an amplifier and only certain people controlled it. That's why you are seeing attacks on Twitter and Elon all by the US Democratic party. They no longer have full control over their most influential social media because it was all artificial, but for how artificial it is, people don't see that, and no matter how independent people are, they can and are swayed by the group. So if Twitter makes it look like the vast majority of people like or talk about something in a certain way, other people will inevitably gravitate to it and be consumed by it. The hardest thing for your average person to do is change their mind on something they care about.

In this age of social media, it isn't a wizard behind a curtain, but algorithms within the Matrix, if you will, that magnify the vocal minority and drive people toward what they want to hear and are interested in instead of driving people toward the truth and what real people in the real world are concerned about and are talking about. We've seen this movie, we've read this book and we've played this video game, where artificial reality creates it's own presence in people's minds distorts the populace's perception of reality and influences them to do and think whatever the machines, and the people behind them, want then to think and do. Social media in general is unfortunately predisposed to ultimately become toxic, and oddly enough the proof comes from the concept of online reviews more so than social media itself. Imagine going to a restaurant, the food is fine, the service is pretty good, overall pretty decent experience. You might tell a friend or a family member that it was nice, but that's about it. Now flip it, same restaurant, but the food was bad, the service was non-existent, and they still charged you an arm and a leg. Well now Google needs to know about this, Twitter, Facebook, and you'll miss no opportunity to rant about it to anyone who will listen. The point is, when we're happy with something, we're already content with it, we don't need external validation and we don't really care how other people feel about it. When we're angry, we want everyone else to be angry about the same thing, we want them on our side, against this common enemy. So when do people post and what types of posts do people interact with? Well if you post happy things, you might get a handful of people saying "Nice," or "Cool," or "Good for you," but if you post something negative suddenly people come out of the void to either back you up and say how much they also hated that thing or to combat you and defend this thing that they loved, leading to heated debates. We talk about things that we find confrontational, and we engage with things that fire us up and force us to take sides. I know I've largely quit using any social media because I noticed how negative things were always getting on them, but even I get the occasional Facebook notification saying that an old friend tagged me in a photo, only to back out of it and see someone starting an "Agents of SHIELD obviously is canon to the MCU for these three (bad) reasons and if you don't agree you're a blind moron" thread. Sometimes I take the bait and charge into battle, but usually I get only as far as hitting the reply button before I ask myself "What do you hope to get out of this?" and then immediately close the app.
Tl;Dr- Social media encourages you to rant when you're angry and either attack or defend things that made other people angry. Nobody discusses the things that make them happy. If you want to be happier, get off of social media.

    • @TheKrazyguy75
      @TheKrazyguy75 Рік тому +6

Not to mention that social media companies want interactivity. Say you disagree, and that restaurant was actually your favorite? You'll make sure to comment on that review "Hey I love that place" and it will start a big argument.
Flip it around. Say someone says "The restaurant was fine; nothing exciting happened." Are you going to go out of your way to comment on that? Maybe. Are they going to respond to your comment? Almost certainly not.
Toxicity breeds discussion. Discussion breeds interactivity within the platform. That means you stay longer and, more importantly, view more ads.

I think what you're missing here is that when something trends on Twitter a very large portion of those tweets are negative, they're from people who do not intend to watch the thing they're talking about. Sure, the Snyder Cut had tons of bots, but a whole lot of the Twitter chatter was from people teasing Snyder fans and being negative about the the movie.
Things trend on Twitter when they're controversial, more so than any other platform. Lots of popular things don't trend well on Twitter because people say they like it and move on... but when some people like it and some people hate it, they argue about it all day. The algorithm plays into this, Twitter has less users, so it drums up controversy to get more engagement from fewer people.

This video also made me think about other echo chambers within entertainment, and as a pro wrestling fan, have been inspired to look into things like DO these metrics that factor into viewing patterns outside of the twitter bubble affect the casual viewer's likelihood to be drawn to the product. I was not surprised at all with the Yellowstone metric. I live in a small town in Montana where a large part of Yellowstone is filmed and the amount of people who flocked to my small town to live here just for the show is insane.

Didn't they film some of season 3 in Gardiner? I always get a kick out of the supposed geography of the show. Mainly how they head to the Pryor mountains from the Bozeman area, and on the way back, they stop in Dillon, MT... which is in southwest MT on the opposite side of Bozeman and the Pryors.

Avatar came out when I was only 5 and to this day it is one of my absolute favorite movies along with The Princess Bride. I have waited the majority of my life for Avatar 2 and I am so tremendously hyped to see it in theaters!!!!!

Princess Bride was an interesting case where it didn't do all that well in theatres, but once it hit the home video market, it became huge. I remember back then that word of mouth did a lot in the early 90s. We didn't have those massive social media platforms back then. Something a lot of companies forget is that many people don't care about major social media outlets: they will see what they want to see. The discussion about films that takes place in the real world can be more important than that on social media.

Matpat: I've never seen anyone talking about this
Me: bro, it's every where on TV commercials lol

I never thought the show you guys were talking about was Yellowstone, even though I saw the tag. I thought everyone knew it was popular and assumed people would be talking about it on Twitter because of that. But the only reason I know about it is because of my parents, since they love the show and talk about it nonstop. Really shows how skewed things are on Twitter

5:33 Actually would recommend guilty gear matpat, even just looking up the lore. I would love a Gametheory.

4:57 ... been saying this for ages. Love that Mat used Doctor Who as an example. When Whittaker was announced, there were a small handful of fans who dismissed her outright, but the coverage of this tiny minority was absolutely massive. Basically, for every not-my-doctor there were a thousand people complaining about those not-my-doctors.
And yes, Twitter was a big part of that.
