The kit and bikes age cycling so quickly. You can tell almost the year just by the colours they’re wearing. In terms of the video quality it looks like it’s been copied multiple times. Your phone now is a lot better than your phone from 2006 but the real cameras used for tv from this era (the brand is probably Red or Elektra) are pretty much the same as now.

At 1:23:20 Phil Ligget states "This rider had a great sleep last night." This comment is comedy gold. These were legendary stages of the Tour. I don't really care that that there were medical enhancements used at the time. Medical enhancements are used today, just different kinds. I don't believe they're racing "clean." It can't be down to aerodynamic advances, and better clothing. In 2021 they're riding faster than ever. SOMETHING is still going on, and it's not down to better food, training and slipperier equipment. It's simply that the list of banned medications does not equal whatever the riders are using.
Phil's always got the gold. I do care about the doping; I can't re-watch races from ~1992 through 2010 with much enjoyment. I'd like to think Cadel won clean in 2011 ('cause I was there to watch) but who knows. If you take a look at pro times up Alpe D'Huez they have slowed down. Nairo is the fastest of the modern era and his best time puts him at 14th fastest, behind all the most infamous dopers. Still, I get what you're saying. I think they'll all push the limit of what's allowable (TUE's for example) and the cold calculating tactics and results of Brailsford's Team Sky/Ineos leaves me suspicious. Thanks to streaming, I'm watching more racing now than ever before and I was pretty die-hard back in the day. Hopefully we're seeing clean wins, but we'll never know for sure.
Anyone who thinks cycling, or any sport offering 7 figure salaries, or has national pride involved (Olympics etc) is clean are being very naive. Personally I think the difference between these years of peak doping and today is how blatant it was and I think guys aren't using things like EPO anymore mid competition. Most doping occurs out of competition during training cycles and it's all about leaving the taper off as late as possible to test clean on race day. The doping authorities are much better at spotting elevated hematocrit levels and the like these days. My suspicion is that we no longer see crazy Landisesque high mountain heroics where one guy just drops everyone like they're standing still because no one is crazy enough to do a shit ton of EPO mid TDF anymore.
@@KD_cycling Wasn't EPO, it was testosterone. Armstrong's crew stopped using EPO when the test was developed. Then they went back to the good old blood doping method.
@@KD_cycling it's not only about testing clean on race day though. Out of competition tests need to be clean as well. That's why Rasmussen lied about his whereabouts which ultimately got him thrown out of the Tour, 2-3 stages before his victory.
This was filmed on pro cameras. The bad quality is probably due video comparison and how it was transferred from source. Maybe it was written from analog tv to vhs tape.. then compressed by sub par settings and then uploaded to youtube where it was compressed again..
Lance "The Bitch" Armstrong is the one who snitched on Landis because he couldn't stand being upstaged. I still think this was one of the greatest rides of the TDF, as they were all juiced to the gills. Same with Alberto Contador, Lance hate him.
Dude get your facts straight. Landis was caught, but instead of just taking a 2 year ban, he fought it for a while, THEN he started throwing everybody he knew under the bus. I'm no Armstrong fan, but Landis is a douche.
The TdF would still be ridden if there was no such thing as drugs. It would happen more slowly but it would still happen. It roils be more exciting because they would all fatigue far more differently.
Just can't help but think what those old school epo'd up riders would have done if they had ridden modern bike tech during this era. As a lover of old school skinny light box section rims and tubs, these are the final years of not running carbon wheels all the time.
Yep,.Pantani's time up alp duez still to be topped, and that was over 25 years ago. Drugs make cyclists unbeatable, like Landis in this stage. Much of the drugs has been dealt with but it's still happening, just in microdosing and bending the rules on prescription drugs.
This was pure drama in 2006. Now it’s filed under ‘comedy’. I laughed out loud at the point where FL passes the breakaway. It was plausible that a solo rider with descending skills could put handfuls of time on the peloton on this course, but it ....just... wasn’t... the truth.
Not to take Floyd's part in any possible way here, but we all have to acknowledge that he wasn't one of very few riders on drugs, on the contrary we may say the 'pan y aqua' guys were minority and none of the top riders were clean. Floyd, Lance, Marco and a bunch of others paid for sins that were not only theirs. Not to mention team managers and doctors. Speaking of this stage alone, I think the main factors to his success wasn't his sheer "strength" alone, but also very poor tactics from the other leaders.. you don't follow him only to find yourself in the red and with no team around you, instead you ride a steady tempo and keep your team together. The pace the peloton kept for most of the climbs was not a good one, probably due to the waste of energy they did early in the stage... when you see a bunch of 40+ riders on top of the penultimate climb all together it means they aren't riding very fast. Normally you would have 8-10 GC riders left with a few liutenants.. no more than 15 riders and sprinting over the mountain top
LMFAO!!!… a commoner telling a multiple Tour de France professional cyclist who rode along Lance Armstrong, and destroyed the pro peloton on a mountain route, that he needs a better bike fit. 😂
Isn't it rediculous how those guys try to make someone a "hero" who lost 37 seconds and the reace lead in two mountain stages in the alps (in spite of drugs, most obviously)?
Now we know the truth, this is just wrestling. Floyd loved doping so much that he retired and started a doping business. Pro cyclists, eh? Absolutely no morals..........
Just a purely toxic ride... the USA riders made a complete farce of the tour for a number of gears. Shame on all those that cheated during this shameful period in cycling

Thank you for putting these 2 Stages together, providing crucial contrast.
My pleasure
“He’s going to leave his mark on this tour - one way or another.”
Nailed it there, Phil.
The filming of the tour was much better back then with the type of shots they captured. Excellent scenery / rider angles 👌🤩
How does 2006 look so old already
Tech has advanced too fast. There’s only so much you can do with pixels and colours. The next step is like alien shit.
i feel the same way lol

magnificent scenery, magnificent tv coverage and commentary.
My favourite two stages ever. Epic entertainment.

1.12 - Landis Rises😀
