Woah. This might be the fairest extraordinarily hard game I've seen yet. The hitbox for your ship is incredibly precise and generous (check out how close those missiles get to Ryu). The enemy placement tends to leave plenty of room and time to see and predict what's coming. Not to mention when you die, the game gives you just long enough to analyze the screen before starting the next life, giving the player a moment to interpret what killed them, what to do, and how to avoid getting punished in the future. Despite being insanely hard, the game gives you lots of powerful tools that have tons of technical uses beyond just adding missiles that drop from your ship every 1.5 seconds of sustained main cannon fire. It rewards skillful play and punishes slow reflexes or bad gameplay. SO FREAKING COOL!!

Yeah he should charge the shot for the final boss, although I admit that hard mode on this game is freaking badass. That look of defeat at 18:15, just sums up this whole game. I played an R-Type game on Genesis with my cousin all the time, and we put it on easy and I'm pretty sure we never passed its fourth stage. Ever.
I played the hell out of this game when I was young, never on hard though! Still super fun to watch Ryu take in a tough game that I've actually finished.
This series is the best. Super R-Type was a very early (possibly launch title?) game for the SNES. I remember another shooter called Gaiares for the Genesis that was supposedly ever harder but I don’t know. They both wrecked me equally.
I love this game because it seems like you have zero idea what's going on with the upgrades. They're all different colours and some of them give you crazy lasers and some put your little helper bot on steroids. It's like whaaaaaat.
Getting to stage 3 on Hard for your first playthrough is amazing, I hope you revisit this game sometime, because some of the later level sound tracks are awesome. Also, for those wondering, yes there is another difficulty after Hard called "Pro" that is unlocked via beating the game once or inputting a code at the title, this game gets even more ridiculous.
The Arcade version [same as the one featured in "Gradius III & IV" for PS2] is, but the SNES version is merciful by comparison. You see, the worst part of the Arcade version is the Cube Stage of the Damned. I could never clear it. It takes place right before the final stage. The SNES version of Gradius III has the most difficult part being the Hi-Speed stage...if you're not prepared.
Gradius III was my favorite SNES game back in the day, and still fun to this day. I could beat it on easy back then, but I only beat it on normal for the first time a few years ago. I played this game a lot as well, but never beat it even on the easiest setting. It's definitely another level of hard.
Welcome to R-Type my friend. I spent a good chunk of my childhood playing the original game on Sega Master System. It was absolutely brutal and I think it took me at least a year to beat it. The thing was that after you run out of continues you start the game all way back in the beginning again so you better memorize everything and be alert constantly. The second last stage was the most insane level in any game I've ever played and that took the longest time for me to complete. It didn't help that once I got there I would quickly run out of continues and I had to start from the very beginning of the game again.
Definitely one of the hardest games ever made but the mechanics of the attachment was really ahead of its time. It was like nothing else seen in a side scroller and made the game a gem.
I grew up with this game! Super fun and fantastic soundtrack! Never could beat it on anything higher than Easy mode! Don't forget about your charge shot. If you can manage to charge it during a boss fight, get right in on their weak spot and blast them full force with it! Can't wait to see him fight the boss of the 5th level.
I'm not sure it should be part of this series or not, but I use to love Star Fox on the SNES. I never got much further than beating the first planet and couldn't believe that there was more. I would certainly enjoy seeing more of that game. Thanks Ryu.
Playing the "Novice" level is a good way to get accustomed to Super R-Type, as you get to keep all power-ups after death, and you don't get nearly as many projectiles flying at you. You get a feel for the stage layouts, the obstacles in them, and powerup locations. For anyone curious, the powerups in this game are: S = Speed (as we saw) Blue M = Regular Missiles (launched slightly forward and down) Pink M = Homing Missiles Rotating Sphere Thingy = Pits (1st above, 2nd below, shields you from most impacts, but don't block projectiles as well as the Pod. Not recommended against those falling critters in Stage 3, either.) Blue Orb = Reflect Laser (3 bouncing beams straight forward and at 45-degree angles) Purple Orb = Sky Attack Laser (Bubbles straight ahead) Green Orb = Spread Beam (4 orange forward shots, slightly above and below your ship) Yellow Orb = Ground Attack Laser (beams travel straight up and down, and travel along the floor and ceiling either forward or backward, dependent on your Pod's position) Gray Orb = Shotgun Blast (Shot travels short-range, then explodes over a moderate area. First appears in Stage 4 :( ) 1st orb of any color gives you the Pod, 2nd of any color gives you a weaker version of the corresponding color, 3rd gives a strong attack of that color. Pressing A will detach or recall the Pod, making it easier to place behind you to defend against attacks from the rear.
Good work, dude - especially with that being your first time playing. This game wrecked me, when I was a child. We sold our SNES after the PS2 came out and it's only been recently that I bought a copy of this and tried it out once more. I didn't make it much farther than you did, before I moved on to something else and I wasn't even playing on Hard.
Beating the R-Type games is one of my greatest video game accomplishments. By the way, you can "call" the attachment thingy to you with the press of a button so you don't have to go to it. Also, you can use the same button to "shoot" it as a projectile into enemies. A lot of this game is memorization. Memorizing the enemy patterns and where they go/shoot, etc. Good luck, bro.
I highly recommend 2 SNES games. Solar Jetman, which is to me one of the most realistic feeling spaceship simulators ever made. And guerrilla war. Which is an intense contra style shoot em up. Both are unforgiving.
UN Squadron is one that haunts me. My parents only got us 4 games for SNES and I'm enough older than my brothers that I did the vast majority of playing those games for the 10-ish years before I moved out and they started to get more modern consoles. I only beat Gradius III once and I only got to the 4th area of UN Squadron once in all that time.
Merennulli my brothers and I would put HOURS of time into UN Squadron grinding money for planes and special weapons just to get to the final boss and never beat it. The limited special weapons was easily the most difficult part for us.
@@Shesmydisease I usually died in the third area to the overhead boss. Watching a speedrun just now, I suspect the problem was that I always went with the A10 to deal with ground enemies more easily and I notice speedrunners don't do that.
Merennulli we used that one until the level near the end where the boss was on the ceiling. Then we ground out enough money to buy the most expensive plane that could use all weapons. It isn’t the preferred method I’m sure but we just kinda steamrolled through. The napalm bomb was so effective against everything we could get on top of.
I remember this game when I was a kid. It was hard as heck. I love this series. I’m gonna have to look thru all my old games and give you a suggestion for another extraordinarily hard game
I've always loved R-Type, I'm amazed you did so well without understanding the controls. You can call your power-up back to you, you don't have to chase it. Also you can get 2 shields (1 above and 1 below).
22:56 is thee funniest thing ever. The look of total disbelief - welcome to our world, this was the norm for our games back then. You had to be good or you didn't see the game's end. I forgot how graphically beautiful this game is.
I know this is way late but I use to play this game all the time, still one of my faves. After the water stage it becomes nigh impossible on hard and you can hit the button again that launches your option to cause it to start magnetizing towards your ship. Great vid
Holding the button down that launches also brings it back to you like a magnet. Also launching it into boss cores does massive stacking damage on top of it firing. It can be thrown at lessers that take multiple hits one shotting them. I use to fly close to bosses basically kissing them with it to do tons of damage when possible. It can clear your way in a tunnel smothered with enemy fire, launch forward clearing shots and reel it back!
A good strat for that last boss of this video is to attach your gunner-ball-thingy to the back to your ship before entering it's lair, then dettaching it to the right side of the monster where his eye pops out, then bring our ship to the left side and so, no matter what, which ever side the eye pops out, you'll get a hit on it.
actively using the pod as a weapon by lauching and recalling him helps a lot with this game as opposed to just flying over to him and attach.. also.. pick your weapon types at the right time.. ring laser was always my fav :)
as someone who grew up with super r-type, this is great watching a great player try for the first time. Keep in mind, your sentry gun is a great defender ....
Possibly the most underrated "extraordinarily hard games" are Contra: Shattered Solder and Gradius V. Both are amazing PS2 games that never got enough attention.
I absolutely love that you brought back this series. I've commented this before I'll say it again. Do Bucky O'Hare for NES. It routinely makes lists for top 10 best games on the console as well as being notoriously difficult. It was my favorite game as a kid. Made it to the final boss once never beat him. The game is a gem. It would make great content. Check it out.
Super R-Type is one of my favourite games of all time, ive never made it passed the boss that ryukahr got to here though, i can get there, but not past it. One thing to note is the orange orb can be used against enemies by touching them with it.
One thing I think that a lot of people don't realize is just how much the game wants you to use your Force to defend yourself AND to shoot it into enemies. Blocking a lot of shots by hitting it or just how it does damage per frame when it's bumping into enemies (It does a ton!). Still it lets you be super flexible with how you're playing. But man the Charge shots hit so many more times But overall R-Type is always been brutal, although R-Type III has a bit more flexibility due to the three Force options you can use and there's a LOT less slowdown from what I can remember
I absolutely loved this game as a kid and I still adore it for its advanced gameplay for a game. You should take a moment to familiarize yourself with the controls. The yellow "power up" is called "Force". Button B is manual fire and charge shots. A seperates and retracts the Force (While retracting you can press it again to stop it from retracting). X is fully automatic fire. The blue "M" is a bomb (high damage), the red/pink is two homing rockets (minimal damage). Color power ups, blue = lasers, Red/Pink = rings, Green = spherical balls of doom, Yellow = Wall hugging flames, Grey = short range missile that goes straight and causes massive damage. The "Eye" things that sticks above of you is called a "Pit". You can collect up to two of 'em at a time. Good luck with your next vid, for the 3rd boss, I recommend you charge a shot and hit the core to cause the most damage instead of poking it. Also, this game gets alot trickier towards the end. If I recall correctly, level 7 is the one that troubled me the most.
Great video, and great game! Two observations: The first-level charge, with the big single shot is really useful and not that slow - try using that more often on the bigger, multi-hit enemies. It also pierces small enemies, so you can take out entire rows of them if you place your shots well. Second, pushing the button that fires off your shield dingus while it's not attached will recall it back to you. This makes it a lot easier to reattach without having to move yourself to where it happens to be, which is usually in harm's way.
Playing thru the game in normal/novice is key to learning the core mechanics and which upgrades are best for each situation. Solid color upgrades are your biggest concern. As they are the key to big damage. The first Solid color upgrade from scratch will always be the orb. "S" upgrades speed and "M" upgrades missiles. But i wont spoil anything more that that.
The most powerful ship in the galaxy, but it can’t take a single hit. That means the canon story for this game is the pilot not so much as let a speck of dirt touch the ship, what a badass.
Didn't remember the difficulty escalating things that harshly but still a fun watch man! Got an obscure EHG for you that's also a space shoot'm up, Viewpoint for either the neo-geo arcade or for the sega genesis (first runs smoother but the later has better music, other ports are pretty bad). While not as strategically complex as this one, what makes it difficult is it's skewed 3D perspective and shifting patterns, but like contra it's a strange sci-fi trip worth sight-seeing .
I remember beating this game as a kid. You just have to play it so much and die so many times that you memorize the spawns and such. It was so long ago I can't remember how long it must have taken me to beat. R-Type, R-type 3, and Gradius 3. All the same.
Just a little note - don't forget your full-charge shot! It works a lot like a shotgun - you can shot at large range to spread damage to the entire room, OR you can shoot it point-blank for a TON of damage.
I think its worth mentioning that R Type has a number of remasters that are all considered pretty solid. I know you prefer to focus on the snes games, but dimensions EX is on switch and is a remaster of the original arcade games. There's also R-Type Final (and Final 2 whenever it comes out) which is a tribute to the entire series. Somehow R Type is one of those rare series that continued to survive all these years later.
I dabbled in R-Type a bit on the old 8- and 16- bit systems, but it wasn't until I picked up R-Type Final on PS2 that I really got into it. While the game was piss easy for an R-Type game, and not all that fun, the fact that you could unlock and play as something like 102 different ships was fantastic!
Oh man this is glorious! When I got my SNES I got SMW and Super R-Type. I have been SO ANGRY at this game SO MANY TIMES! It's good to see somebody else be tortured as well!
Watching some of these videos is proof of how hard some games can be when you're trying to figure out what's what without the instruction booklet. I have Super R Type & it is indeed very hard but once you figure it out the challenge is not so much dealing with the difficulty but the INTENSITY of it! I enjoyed watching you tackle the first few stages especially your reactions & commentary. The only glaring mistake you made as a 1st timer is you totally forgot about the weapon charge feature. I'll be looking for a "round two" or "play through" video from you on this one.
Played this first on the Amiga back in 89 and vowed never to return. Then the SNES version came along sometime later.. Needless to say, after three controllers became a permanent fixture embedded in my wall and Super-R-Type many years later is used as a form of punishment. Yes, I still have it and yes, I use it as a form of punishment when my kids are playing up..............
Growing up, I remember only a few games I could never beat despite spending hundreds of hours: Dragon Spirit R-Type Ultima IV The last may be too slow for your viewers but the others should be perfect for your series.
I'm going to recommend Touhou 12: Undefined Fantastic Object. I've heard people say "Touhou" before but never specify which game. 12 is the hardest to clear (especially if you don't use continues), and the first five require an emulator for an ancient Japanese PC so they're probably a no-go.
In R-type, having more than one life is really only there to extend the misery you feel from having died. If you’re a few levels in and you die once you might as well just restart the game because you’re totally screwed without all the upgrades.
I had to find a TAS (which was set to PRO difficulty!) for this one, just to see what sorts of techniques were used. The auxiliary pod definitely saw a lot of creative use, and the game gets so much harder. Some of the apparent difficulty could perhaps be chalked up to TAS showboating, but, even so, watching it makes me imagine a conversation among game developers: Dev 1: Check it out, I added a PRO difficulty level. Dev 2: Wow, is that even possible to beat?! Dev 1: I guess we'll find out!

Same also played the SMS version
For anyone curious, the powerups in this game are:
S = Speed (as we saw)
Blue M = Regular Missiles (launched slightly forward and down)
Pink M = Homing Missiles
Rotating Sphere Thingy = Pits (1st above, 2nd below, shields you from most impacts, but don't block projectiles as well as the Pod. Not recommended against those falling critters in Stage 3, either.)
Blue Orb = Reflect Laser (3 bouncing beams straight forward and at 45-degree angles)
Purple Orb = Sky Attack Laser (Bubbles straight ahead)
Green Orb = Spread Beam (4 orange forward shots, slightly above and below your ship)
Yellow Orb = Ground Attack Laser (beams travel straight up and down, and travel along the floor and ceiling either forward or backward, dependent on your Pod's position)
Gray Orb = Shotgun Blast (Shot travels short-range, then explodes over a moderate area. First appears in Stage 4 :( )
1st orb of any color gives you the Pod, 2nd of any color gives you a weaker version of the corresponding color, 3rd gives a strong attack of that color.
I loved this game growing up. It was one of my first SNES games. I think I got it for $5 at Target. Hard af, but thatch what we had in the 90's. lol
started playing this when I was 10. great times, amazing music for its time. found the album on spotify recently. great nostalgia
I've always loved R-Type, I'm amazed you did so well without understanding the controls. You can call your power-up back to you, you don't have to chase it. Also you can get 2 shields (1 above and 1 below).
Yes! Took me months to beat this when I was a kid, pop in my SNES and cant get through 3 levels haha
One of my favorite games. Thanks for playing it it and bringing back such great memories.
I forgot how awesome the extraordinarily hard games was
Keep it up
Super R-Type is one of my favourite games of all time, ive never made it passed the boss that ryukahr got to here though, i can get there, but not past it.
But man the Charge shots hit so many more times
But overall R-Type is always been brutal, although R-Type III has a bit more flexibility due to the three Force options you can use and there's a LOT less slowdown from what I can remember
The look on Ryu's face at 22:57 is why I love this series so much...
I’m so so so glad this series is back.
The r type series has always been a challenge to play. Great replay value. R type delta still my favorite out of the series.
OMG! Legit LOVED this game when I was a kid! The later levels are absolutely BRUTAL if you don't keep all of your upgrades...
18:14 it looked like he was about to cry😭
Playing thru the game in normal/novice is key to learning the core mechanics and which upgrades are best for each situation.
Solid color upgrades are your biggest concern. As they are the key to big damage.
The first Solid color upgrade from scratch will always be the orb.
"S" upgrades speed and "M" upgrades missiles.
But i wont spoil anything more that that.
The most powerful ship in the galaxy, but it can’t take a single hit. That means the canon story for this game is the pilot not so much as let a speck of dirt touch the ship, what a badass.
I wish you livestreamed these extraordinarily hard games on Twitch, but thanks for these videos anyway!
This game is super fun to watch. Also, really like the high-res full-screen ryu camera parts.
This game is actually super cool. The art direction is something else.
It's good to see somebody else be tortured as well!
contra hard corps on genesis would be perfect for this series , probably the hardest game on the genesis !
Or kid chameleon.
Long time fan. Should really check "I Want to be the Guy Gaiden" for extraordinarily hard games. Trust me, it's the challenge you deserve.
Wow this is really cool. I like that all the hit boxes are accurate. No jank. Happy Easter man
Played this first on the Amiga back in 89 and vowed never to return. Then the SNES version came along sometime later.. Needless to say, after three controllers became a permanent fixture embedded in my wall and Super-R-Type many years later is used as a form of punishment. Yes, I still have it and yes, I use it as a form of punishment when my kids are playing up..............
10:51 Dude, I know that feeling too well 😄
Growing up, I remember only a few games I could never beat despite spending hundreds of hours:
Dragon Spirit
R-Type
Ultima IV
The last may be too slow for your viewers but the others should be perfect for your series.
I remember this game back when I was a kid. Don't ever remember beating it though. So nostalgic seeing Ryu play it.
The last level is completely unfair as well. These things kamikaze you from all directions and you aren't physically fast enough to evade them.
In R-type, having more than one life is really only there to extend the misery you feel from having died. If you’re a few levels in and you die once you might as well just restart the game because you’re totally screwed without all the upgrades.
The music is what I remember the most about this game, one of the best ost's
15:41 I kid you not comment section, he turned himself into a ball and pulverized Ryu.
Funniest shit I’ve ever seen
0:06 "You look like you escaped from Jumanji 2 months ago" XD
Love me some R-Type! That one has been remade a bunch but no matter which version, it's always fun.
When the mid bosses are stronger than some games' final bosses..
Those here the days
I had to find a TAS (which was set to PRO difficulty!) for this one, just to see what sorts of techniques were used. The auxiliary pod definitely saw a lot of creative use, and the game gets so much harder.
Some of the apparent difficulty could perhaps be chalked up to TAS showboating, but, even so, watching it makes me imagine a conversation among game developers:
Dev 1: Check it out, I added a PRO difficulty level.
Dev 2: Wow, is that even possible to beat?!
Dev 1: I guess we'll find out!
Love the Extraordinarily Hard games series! Keep up the great work Ryu!
Hey, I only know you from Extraordinarily Hard Games from a while ago. I love this series and I'm stoked. Cheers to more!
This game was pretty cool back in the last century. Great artwork.
Watching Ryu play this does make me wonder what he'd make of Sheep In Space but that's more Extraordinarily Weird Games than Hard.
Very happy to see this series coming back!
I'd love to see Ikaruga on this series. Shmups have an inherent "Extraordinarily Hard" nature.
Oh man, I have fond memories of R-Type. The fact that the series is over hurts me, but I loved them. I need to get you into Touhou games
I've seen harder shmups, but I wouldn't have made it that far on Super R-Type...love this series Ryu, keep it up
production value looks great, my man. been happily following your success
