Agreed, as a big fan of Dream Theater for the last 20 years of so, it's impossible to ignore or forget just how much of Mike Portnoy's soul and spirit is within so much of DT's works. He clearly poured almost every bit of himself into DT (sometimes unheathily so, he'd possibly admit). I'm sorry how things turned out for him with wanting the break from DT and I hope he is mostly happy and comfortable, he does deserve it.
Love the way the toms are placed. I have a 24in base drum 1979 Ludwig. I looks like I have to place the tom mount towards the front of the kick to get the toms right without using a rack system. The problem they toms are big 13 14 15 rack toms.
@@ejsinner1520 All subjective. Portnoy is phenomenal for what he does. There are a lot of amazing drummers and then there are phenomenal drummers that have their distinct style and Portnoy is one of them.
One note: Mike had a different drum tech during (at least, part of) the Octavarium tour, Eric Disrude. I met him in the airport, the day after the big Radio City show in NYC. He was a very nice gentleman.
He toured with a Birch Bubinga (B/B) kit for BCSL, but I recall from a video that he said he had three kits made up in the BCSL finish - B/B, Bubinga, and Maple.
@@FanaticDrummer the bcsl finish is actually a lot easier to find in maple, tama offers starclassic Maple kits in that finish so a lengthy search or a custom order should do you well

Nick Gustafson I’m a drummer. And I DONT know, MP has had a bunch of different kits over the years. I came to this video because his IG said something like “Gear nerds might want to watch my kit walkthrough” Well, I’m a gear nerd, and they didn’t get “nerdy” enough for me

Bryan Beyer I was thinking the same thing. goes into debt on the cymbals and sizes but skimmed over the drums. what series of tama's is that? I'm sure a real "cool" kid like above will have another smart as remark. Thank you James for letting us know.
He sounds like he really appreciates his drum tech work
Times when being sick was ok.
Maybe he DID have covid and nobody knew it
If you're Mike Portnoy's drum tech, you're basically the second best drummer in the world. Cheers to Jose!

I saw him live in Michigan for this tour. OMG, was so amazing
That's probably one of the nicest setups I've ever seen 👌

He’s really wearing a Netflix shirt lol Well they need to host his DVD’s now haha

Eccentrics ok?.. What does that have to do with me hoping he's cut some sort of deal with Netflix?

They actually mentioned him in a Netflix anime that was recently released, so this video is now even better!
which one?

Donald Blakeman I believe he is still the drum tech in the Dream Theater camp, for Mangini.
Jose sounds like Portnoy's most prized band member. Also sounds like he's well payed.
If I remember well, it was a Starclassic Bubinga kit for the Black Clouds & Silver Linings Tour...
Is just the same finish like he said. this one is maple tho.
tompramana account Yup. They did make a few in B/B and Maple, but the maple is almost impossible to find. Wasnt a main run of sets.

His set up is genius
Just looked at tour dates, one month in the states, two months over seas. No dates in Ga, good thing I buy the CDS and DVDs for live shows.
He plays for Netflix

I can't wait for the next Transatlantic album! Want it NOWWWW!! Mike is one of the nicest guys out there! Thanks for sharing this one.
I wish they covered all heads and tuning in these. that's where the sounds come from. No resonant tom re, snare or BD heads mentioned.
Props to the drum tech.
sorry, did you say you tape your 420x sticks..? I thought the X series avoided the tape thing... lol
