Thank you so much for sharing this very easy and clear explanation. You are saving me alot of money and with coupons and this list I will succeed. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you very much for this video. I've got about 10 markers and have been wanting to start colouring my stamping. This video has been very helpful for me in deciding which markers to buy.
Wow, this tutorial was the most helpful I saw. I wanna to start drawing with copic markers and I have got 5 or 6, but that are only skin tones and because I draw a lot of fashion illustration I have to get also the other colours (blue, red, etc.) and I saw a lot of tutorials but they haven't had so good examples and so good discribing on shading and blending colours. First I wanted to buy a set on 36 markers but now I'll buy the markers you have showed because I think they are the best. Thank you for this tutorial. (sorry when I made some mistakes I'm not english :))
Just used your recommendations and placed an order for my first batch of Copic Sketch markers. Thanks for taking the time to walk through the range and narrowing it down for me!
Hey I actually use them a lot and I feel like the Es and gray tones are the first ranges you could expand after getting your first markers :) it was super hard to just focus on a few for this guide
Hi I am totally new for copic markers. I bought 3 marker of different colors and later realized that my three color did not match with each other. I have been asking at craft store which colors should i start my collection. I don't want to buy randomly. Thanks to you for detail tips on colors.
The art store near me has this thing where when you buy six at a time you get 2$ off of each marker, so I’m just going to buy six a month/when I need them for projects
I think it's difficult to know which colours individuals will use the most at the start. cos if you dont buy them u wunt try them, and u wunt know how suitable they are for artwork and what colours to use. And it's difficult to "tone" when you only have limited markers. So I just bought cheap alternatives like 100 markers from China, and slowly collect copics
+shellyqt I made it myself, soo unfortunately it's not downloadable. But I based it on the official Copic color chart which can be downloaded :) I just reorganized the color groups and adjusted the amount of colors which go from top to bottom.
That also sounds like interesting skin color choices :) Are you planning on getting a refill for your skin white? Because the other colors are pretty dark :D
Finally a video that offers an explanation as well as color choices that work well together all within a timely manner. Straight to the point without any lolly gagging. I must have watched about 10 videos before I found yours. Definitely the most informative and well done. I finally broke down the other day after years of avoiding getting myself into this expensive habit (Lol) and purchased a few gray tones and violets, but was so overwhelmed with all the color choices I just left the store and decided I better research colors that blend well before just hastily choosing colors. I'm going back to the store tomorrow so this helped tremendously.Thank you!!
This is so good! Finally a video that helps me to decide what copics to start off with. I wish you could do a video on what copics to buy for sketching cars, Sci-fi &/ or design. It can be so confusing starting off, so thanks so much for doing this, really appreciate your fun enthusiasm. Gonna buy more copics now ;D
Heyho, most car/plane designers I have seen so far use the Original Copics. They have two "harder" nibs which make it very easy to follow the structure of metallic/sci-fi things. Hope this helps :)
If I don't can find another way to draw the sky blue I just paint anther clowd. T-shirts have never ever been blue in my book. I have blue pencil from my Faber-Castell polychromos I never have sharpened and they are 5 years old. Violet and lila have never enough pen/pencil colour. Same with Orange and red. Special darker red ❤❤❤ If I realy, realy need a blue, I take a turquoise. Pink is only for lips and the flowers that I in the end paint red instead. There are one more pencil in my Polychromos I never sharpen, my black. The grey on the other hand.... 🙄 I'm thinking of to start to collect copic and just left out blue. And many pink. And non from the F line.
Very interesting video. Thank you for the information. I had to laugh when you said the color Turquoise doesn't really appear in nature! LOL, Turquoise is a natural blue-green stone. It's also the color naturally found in a whole lot of ocean and beach scenes. You also say that VIOLET doesn't really appear in nature? Violet is flower! (Lavender too) and shades of violet appear in flowers, eyes and the sky. It's funny, all the colors you say you rarely use, are the colors I use the most! This is the first video I've watched of yours, so now I'm really curious to see what the heck images you are coloring?! The copic tips were really helpful though. Thanks!
every time you said "how many times are you going to use it.." its for a colour i use A LOT. lol. no no i know you're doing a general thing for the generic artist and i have my own style and preferred pallets but i'm starting my copic collection and each time i'm like "shit but i need a LOT of those ones"
Katie Brazzell Haha, if you use these colors a lot, go for it :D As I said, if you just color sunsets, you'll need every shade of orange and no skin tones. Whereas, if you mainly color human beings, you'll need completely different colors.
thank you very much! and also, do you have to blend the colors to properly use these.? if so how do i properly do it without ruining my art or the markers?
Joshua White you dont have to blend them although its very useful. I recommend blending card because even in a professional sketchbook it bleeds through
Are all of these available in Ciao markers? if not which ones are Sketch? Copic is even more exspensive here in Australia than the U.S. 😣 Tfs & take care 🌹
Heyho, unfortunately not all of them are available as Ciao markers :( These are the ones which are *not* available as Ciaos: Y13, Y23, Y26, E01, E55, R24, B21, B26, G09, YG01. This was one of the reasons why I decided to stick to Sketch markers even though they're more expensive. All of these missing colors are kind of "in between" if you know what I mean. The Ciao color range includes some heavy jumps, e.g. jumping from E53 to E57, which is way too much in my opinion.
+Isomon Thanks so much for your reply. Your right, that is a big jump, ridiculous in fact. I have a full set of Kaiser Fusions, lovely colours but im not sold on their blending ability. Think I'll bite the bullet sell up and invest in Copics. Dont think I'll bother with sets, too many repeats as you mentioned. Instead concentrate on the families i know I'll use in the sketch.
Beachlovingaussies Definitely worth it :) The first buy is the most crucial one since you need a few markers from each color family for blending. After that it's just personal preferences here and there :) Nobody truly needs the whole Sketch range of colors.
You can use a darker color to create shadow, but you need to go up a step in hue as well as shade. So if you use a mid orange, you might try a darker red in the shadow. Or you can create dramatic shadows by using complementary colors. If you have a dark orange near an edge, you can use a blue to get a deep shadow. Using grays is also fun. :) I've been using that method lately to help show depth.
I made a list of colours that I want to get with the help of this video (thank you for makeing this video, it helped alot!) but I like the ciao markers coz they're cheaper but alot of the colours that I like aren't available in the ciao wich sucks coz I dont want to get the skeach only coz of the prise so I realy need some help of some copic markers that are in ciao. thanks.
***** Sorry for replying late. UA-cam somehow doesn't alert me of new comments any more :o If you just want to get Ciaos, you can open a Copic Ciao color chart and compare the colors with this video. Then you will hopefully find Ciaos which are somehow similar to these colors :)
Thank you very much for such wonderful video, all parts are just amazing!!!! I am not a professional artist, I just coloring adult color books :) but i love copic markers
I use turquoise way too much.. not for any particular subjects but just because it's my favourite colour lol- thank you so much for the tips! These recommendations have helped me so much in deciding how to start my collection!
Just found this video totally randomly ! It's been like 8 years I'm using markers (Promarker actually, I have like 10 Copic Ciao they are just so hard to find in France). I think your color list and explanations are good BUT in my opinion using only grey tones for shading is very... kinda sad. I like to start with a very light blue, using grey on it and finally apply the color (depend on the drawing I can use a plum but the blue is my main). Also I've never used the blender... I don't know I'm fine mixing the colors without it. Best regards !
Zugagirl I actually didn't say that you should use only gray tones for shading, but that you should include gray tones to your shading process. I do the exact same thing as you describe it, however, if you leave the grays out of your shading process completely, it just doesn't look like a real shadow (which are grayish to most people's perception). However, as I said in the video, if you don't have that many markers, you can also shade with a darker marker of the color range you're in :) You don't necessarily need the blender for blending colors (although it does that extremely well, too). I mainly use it as an eraser because you can fix tiny mistakes with it ;))
Sorry, but you are wrong. „0“ is the highest saturation and „9“ is the lowest. I find incredible that this video is still online with that wrong information.
Hey, you're actually correct :) I have no clue how this was mixed up back in the day or what my definition of saturation was back then. Pretty sure I must've gotten that info from somewhere. Funny how nobody noticed for 5 years tho haha :D
I feel like if I want to work with a lot of pastels, I will need to get even lighter colours because by the time my colours are flat and not stripey they are already a couple shades too dark, if that makes sense..? 😓
Alise I think when she said 'in nature' she meant colours that were naturally occurring rather than colours found in landscapes, I could be wrong though!
I own 100 Copic markers & I wrote in a exactly every marker you recommended just to see if I owned if not I'll buy. Omg* can you believe out of 100 Copic markers I own I only had 10 of these 🤔😱 I was so sure I had them already. I went to buy my first set hand picked skin tones & I only had one of skin tone u picked. I was positive I all the skin tones guess not.
potthead meg Haha, yes, Copics are an expensive pastime :) But it works if you save up a little bit and always purchase small amounts every few months or you get them as birthday/Christmas presents, etc.
Thanks a lot for your support!! :D And sorry for replying two days later. I have limited Internet access at the moment :( YR12 and YR14 are both extremely close to YR15, so I just went for YR15 ;) I don't have YR18, so my recommendations are obviously also based on the colors I own. YR15, however, is the most "classical" orange for me if there is something like that :) And I'll definitely check out YR18 if you say it's worth looking into! I was just so disappointed from the way YR12, YR14 and YR15 looked alike that I didn't want to purchase any more colors from that series...
I guess most people got what I wanted to say with that. Btw, you can color every single skin tone with the color chart above, light, dark, Asian, etc. For loss of a better word I chose "skin tones" for lighter skin tones. thank you so much. Your video is the first to show a good range for each colour and your video quality is clear!
+KyneticAcademy Thank you so much for your feedback! :D

Thank you, I never use copic before, this chart will be very useful for me :)

Me neither I'm thinking on getting some
Just used your recommendations and placed an order for my first batch of Copic Sketch markers. Thanks for taking the time to walk through the range and narrowing it down for me!
This helps me soooo much! Thank you for your amazing work! I really need this !
I really wished you mentioned the E 70s. They are by far my favorite. It may seem like you never use them but they are actually a fantastic shade
Hey I actually use them a lot and I feel like the Es and gray tones are the first ranges you could expand after getting your first markers :) it was super hard to just focus on a few for this guide
Wish I'd seen this 40 markers ago!
Such a helpful video. Thanks.
Amazing video. Thank you very much for the info. I am going todo purchase five units and iam completly dizzy. Thanks again
Thank you so much for your feedback :) have fun with your markers!

Good suggestions! May I ask- what is your primary language/ what area does your accent originate from?
Thanks a lot! I'm from Germany, but I don't know whether mine can be considered a typical German accent :))
I use Powder pink, fruit pink and yellowish skin pink for my skins... My skin white ran out x-x
That also sounds like interesting skin color choices :) Are you planning on getting a refill for your skin white? Because the other colors are pretty dark :D
Yeah in a few days

After collecting for a while, these really are the basic ones you want to start out with. Great job.
for my skin i use E000 and E00
I usually use E50, E51 and E53 or E000, E00 and E01. Since I wanted to restrict myself to two colors, I chose E000 and E01 to get a better contrast :)
ok
E00 & E11 are life. I do a lot of portraits.
Thank you
Great video.... Love the info you shared, very helpful.... Thank you :>)

Joshua White you dont have to blend them although its very useful. I recommend blending card because even in a professional sketchbook it bleeds through
also if you dont want to layer I recommend the colourless blender
What accent does she have? I cannot figure it out.
Hey, I'm from Germany :) although I have no clue what my accent is trying to be
Oh okay cool! I thought it kind of sounded like a heavy California accent to me or maybe Southren, I wouldn't have guessed German though.
Are all of these available in Ciao markers? if not which ones are Sketch?

Tamila Kushnir Thank you so much for your comment! I hope you have a lot of fun with your markers :)
I don't do humans, I draw marine life, so I need lots of Bs and BGs.
I use turquoise way too much.. not for any particular subjects but just because it's my favourite colour lol- thank you so much for the tips! These recommendations have helped me so much in deciding how to start my collection!

My favourite yr/orange is yr16 apricot! What a funny(cu-wins-i/e-dense)
(sorry I'm not too sure how to spell that)
Coincidence. :)
Ooo you’re close to 2K!!
Great video!
You're really snarky with those colors you supposedly wouldn't use often. Abstract art is also a thing, you know.
Why do you think everyone draws nature
Alise I think when she said 'in nature' she meant colours that were naturally occurring rather than colours found in landscapes, I could be wrong though!
i use orange alot

oh my i have the same gamescom-18yo-hitman bracelet :D wowww i thought i'd be the only one
+Shannon Drz Haha I always love to see GamesCom bracelets on other people too :D I've now removed it because it was starting to fall apart entirely.
Holy crap
I just calculated this is going to cost me R3500
I reckon il stick to painting.
potthead meg Haha, yes, Copics are an expensive pastime :) But it works if you save up a little bit and always purchase small amounts every few months or you get them as birthday/Christmas presents, etc.

im grabing all the ones i need to color in all naruto characters
0 is the highest Saturday and 9 is the lowest - you have it backwards!
Um, those "regular browns" are also skin tones... Black people are a thing, you know.
Skin tones- bc everyone is white and has light skin
I guess most people got what I wanted to say with that. Btw, you can color every single skin tone with the color chart above, light, dark, Asian, etc. For loss of a better word I chose "skin tones" for lighter skin tones. If you have the honor to enlighten me with the politically correct term for these colors, I would be very pleased.
+Isomon I didn't mean to come off as an ass I'm sorry if I did. But I just would have specifically said "lighter skin tones"
fuck that yellow im going golden yellow
RaidenLP golden yellow is super nice would recommend 👌🏻
If you pay for a whole set, you save more money compared to individuals.
That is not always the ‘case..’
I’ll leave now.
can't you speak normally?
+Kah Dizon Obviously not :)
Kah Dizon that's offensive, that accent is her natural voice, I love it!
Her accent is cute and clearer than most people I hear. I say this as someone who's hard of hearing so I appreciate how she articulates and takes her time speaking.
Kah Dizon honestly
Kah Dizon
Isn’t she talking normal?
