I used a starter button like this on my 97' FL some years ago, my Mechanic took it off while servicing the bike, said it wasn't a good idea to start the motor this way? I'm thinking of putting it back on, as to offer a second alt option to starting the bike.

5 years on the bike with zero problems. Thanks for watching the video. 03

What size of socket do I need to take the stock bolts? I have tried several size of them but nothing fits. Thank you, Ryan

I'm getting ready to order one of these push to start buttons for ours, not sure which brand I want yet. They make a nice looking billet aluminum button for around $65 give or take. How has yours performed so far, you still happy with it?

It works every time. I don't have to depend on that tiny little wire that runs from the push button to the starter solenoid. Thanks for watching the video and commenting! 03

@@2003Harleyguy Thank you, yes I think the factory should put these on all of their starters. I'm thinking about getting the one from Spyke Motorcycle Products.

Has there been any problems with these push bottons shorting to ground..??? I put this on and now ever time I push the button it blows out the 15 fuse for all my lights, speedometer, odometer and turn signals...Anyone having these problems. My bike is down until I get this fixed. Can't start the bike without blowing that fuse..

No, never a problem all these years later. I have no idea why it would do that. I'm not a service tech but this is what I would do if it was my bike. I would grab my year and model specific service manual & browse through the troubleshooting section. If you don't have a service manual get one or borrow one.
I would then disconnect the battery and pull the button assembly back off & check everything for any signs of a dead short. I would also check the small wire going to the push to start button on the handlebars for a short. HTH, 03

@@2003Harleyguy Ive owned the Service Manual since I bought the bike. I have read it from front to back and it has a great deal of information but always never information on a specific problem like this. It kind of showed up out of nowhere....One day its fine, next day its blowing the dash cluser and running lights (15 amp fuse) but only on start up....If I don't hit the starter it will sit there all day lite up like a Christmas tree....everything working. Thats what makes this problem so elusive ....it only happens on startup.

same problem here . . . . also BOUGHT BLACK ONE FROM JP - THE BUTTON FELL OFF AFTER ONLY 5K MILES. . -- ADD LOCK TIGHT BEFORE INSTALL TO THE UNIT. I MAY JUST LEAVE IT OFF AT THIS POINT AS IT DOES BLOW FUSES ON MY 2012 STEREO/ STREETGLIDE

On my XLH1200 - I have 2 "buttons" one is a switch that has to be in Run, and the other that engages the starter. If the key is on, will this bypass all of that? Or do I still need the "Run" switch in the On position? I'd like to strip down everything from the handlebars to just the throttle (right) and clutch(left)...

    • @2003Harleyguy
      @2003Harleyguy  3 роки тому

On my bike, the run switch would need to be in the on position. There is a tiny little wire that runs from the starter engage button to the starter relay solenoid. This mod is an alternate method of starting the bike in the event the wire burns up or breaks. HTH 03

@@2003Harleyguy Thanks for the reply! That's what I was thinking as well - I'll probably either need to wire something to bypass that switch or create a new one and move it some where else on the bike. I just want to clean it up and minimalize it.

If your battery is dead, naaaa.
What it mainly does is give you an additional option if the little tiny wire running from your starter button on your handlebar burns up or breaks.
      Thanks for watching.

That's why I said this is for "in the event the push to start button on the handlebars doesn't work". I never said it was for repairing the starter motor if it was needing replacement. Thanks for watching, 03

because most times the starter DOES NOT need replacing! only parts . clutch drive or solenoid issues

@@HarlemWorld_ I ordered a new starter relay for ours but I'm getting ready to order one of these push to start buttons for the solenoid as well for extra insurance. Not only does it bypass the starter button on the handlebars it also bypasses the starter relay in case it goes bad while you're on the road. I think Harley-Davidson should have put these on their bikes right from the factory but that wouldn't be any fun, they'd lose $ from selling starter relays and buttons if they did that.

You do realize. When you remove the cover. That's the moment you have to inspect the 2 contacts and the plunger copper ring for arcing, and wear. That could be one problem of many.
