For those wondering, I'm switching focus to this channel to try and upload more often! This took a little longer than I wanted due to some health issues delaying my work. If you feel like you've not seen me in quite a while, check out the channel! I have uploaded some stuff somewhat recently!
One of my favourite things about the Golden Axe series. In Golden Axe 1, you walk in, you're confronted by deadly foes, you swing with your blade, he falls to the floor, "AAAAAAAAAAAARGH!". The death cry echoing throughout the landscape. Then you get to Golden Axe 2, you walk in, you're confronted by mighty foes, you swing with your blade, he falls to the floor, "Bleh." I still laugh about this experience to this day
As a rare breed of creature who actually played 3 as a kid I can certainly say that game has SIGNIFICANTLY higher skill ceiling then the previous ones. The game is absolutely merciless but I find it very satisfying. Also been able to do each character's unique special move certainly helps, in particular the panther guy Chronos has a unblockable lunge attack that just makes the game easy mode. Team magic is also not the only thing in this game, there is also team attacks that are completely different based which two character does it. They are not just unblockable but can even one shot some enemies. It kinda sounds like they really wanted people to do co-op huh? Well I personally love the game, maybe it's nostalgia but I did always preferred beat'em ups with deeper gameplay. One last thing, if you want more classic Golden Axe gameplay I very highly recommend the fan game Golden Axe Returns. You would like it very much. It bridges the story of 3 and Revenge of Death Adder. It's really cool stuff.
Love to see that you're still at it, I feel the love and passion for the topic from you and you're a pleasant guy. I remember checking in last year and seeing the dead channel and being moderately bummed. Hope your health improves king
I don't think it's officially available anymore, but to celebrate Sega's 60th anniversary, they released Golden Axed: A Cancelled Prototype, which was exactly what it sounds like, and...is truly the most amazing possible name they could have given that. However, it was notoriously unfun, and makes sense that it was cancelled. Fingers crossed the new one turns out alright! Also I'm glad to see this channel is more active. This is always such a fun and relaxing series.
I remember my sister and I trying to get through these games on the PS2 SEGA Genesis Classics Collection. I don't think we ever saw the third stage in any of them, but we had fun just messing around, and I distinctly remember liking the panther dude from the third game.
Maybe it's because I grew up during the Gamecube/PS2 Era, but I find it hard to go back and play these more archaic beat-em-ups even though I love the genre. Also, I appreciate the McGuffin being an axe in this game, instead of a sword. There are TOO many swords in games!
Sad to hear you hated GA3 so much. As a child I only played Golden Axe 3 and I loved it so much. Playing coop with a friend was the best! Combining spells, choosing different paths was awesome. Enemies blocking never bothered us that much. You could often grab such enemies, strike from a different angle or pincer attack. I loved playing as an agile cat guy. Also the music on the first level is excellent, so heroic, adventurous and epic! I still listen to covers of it to this day.
I remember my dad introducing me to the arcade version of the first game (which he *loved* in his time) and playing it together with him. Later on I'd check out (emulate) the third entry on Megadrive and fall in love with *that* one instead. Compared to the overall super basic first entry, 3 adopted a TON of mechanics from more advanced later games in the genre like SOR and it was *so* cool having so much more going on mechanically there. Massive branching paths, faster combos, blocking, quick low attacks, standardized grabs and command-activated moves that can counter blocks, co-op attacks and magic in multiplayer... The second game is... _fine_ but it really feels like more of the first game with only minor QOL and gameplay adjustments. Doesn't improve _nearly_ as much by comparison. Kinda wish they'd kept the franchise going properly after that point, building off of the base they'd set up in that way, instead of leaving it dormant for years only to give it that one weird 7th-gen reboot that no one liked... *EDIT:* Fully watching the video now, if you ever give GA3 another try and still have no access to co-op, I'd suggest looking into the full special move lists for each character... The panther dude _especially_ has some absolutely DEVASTATING moves that can cover huge distances and go through enemy guards. Same with the others, who have stuff ranging from projectiles to flashy attacks that can also (mostly) get through guards. I feel like it'd help your issues with the enemy AI?
Golden Axe 1 and Streets Of Rage 2 were the most played games on my old Megadrive. Watching this video and learning of a remake actually gave me the idea to play both via the PS3 SEGA Megadrive Collection :P Might even give the sequels a go if they're on it
If I could like this video more than once, I would! This is fantastic! GA3 was my childhood with my older brother. I always picked the woman. The music though.... THE MUSIC!!!❤❤❤❤
The skeletons in Death Bringer's boss arena don't have infinite health, they do have a ton on health and the programmer probably intended you to just fight Death Bringer and set it to the max value but I recommend just killing the skeletons first.
I don't know if you played it but in the arcades there was another sequel of golden axe, way different than the one in the genesis. If you like arcade games and don't mind emulation, you should try it, I recommend it
Fun fact, the neo-skeletons don’t have infinite health, it’s just ridiculously high. That said, it’s really not worth the effort unless you specifically want the challenge 😂
In defense... kind of of golden axe 3, the jump attacking and enemy trying to knock you down is the natural progression of the combat and for me just changed how i faced encounters, that said the blocking was a bad add to a game like this and can drag it down if you don't figure out the tricks, still i enjoy 3 alot, though not as much as 2 or revenge of death adder. Speaking of, you should try the arcade only golden axe game golden axe: the revenge of death adder, it's probably something you'll love as a fan of 2, provided you haven't played it yet.
I remember playing the shit out of Golden Axe 2 on some old terrible AtGames portable Mega Drive, that sound was so terrible but I still had lots of fun with the game
I didn't grew up with these games, but I've played them all at some point and they are some of my first beat em up experiences. And yeah, I must say... they nearly ruined the whole genre for me in one fell swoop. Basically stuff you've mentioned about the first game, and a thing that games still won't get right to this day. I can't hit the enemy, but they can hit me... it felt always so cheap and frustrating. Plus, these running attacks. Oh MY GOD are they frustrating. Cause it doesn't matter how much distance you've put between you and the enemy. They run at you at knock you down in an instant. Together with these constant jumping attacks in the third game. My char was lying so often on the ground, it's like I'm actually in the game. But hey, on a positive note, there is one "Golden Axe" game that I absolutely love. It's called "Golden Axe Warrior" and is basically "The Legend of Zelda" for the "Master System".

Idk why but hearing "Good, great, and WHAT HAPPENED" had me laughing. That was my favorite reaction to all these games. XD

four playthroughs of golden axe 3, one for each of the characters, yet there are five of them
The detective bit got me good lol
The real Golden Axe 3 is Revenge of Death Adder. I refuse to accept the existence of any others. :D
Great video as always G, voice over is very clean
I didn't expect to get a video from the legendary Gwolf
Seems like a fun game indeed. Cant wait to see how Golden Axe would be in the future.
Great video as always!

Good to see a video from you
Long time no see, Pixelated Memories! I missed your British voice and awesome beard. If you could let us know what happen, that be great.
Personal life and mental health stuff... He explained why both on Twitch and the MegaGwolf channel.

Whats sad, I've used the name "Thunderhead" in one of my projects. Prior to even knowing of this game. Just a small chuckle i suppose lol
That ain't sad, that's awesome!

Great vid g. See you again in 6 months to 2 years.
1:34 - Kinky.
I'm surprised no Revenge of Death=Adder or The Duel mentions, just a cursory side swipe at Beast Rider lmao
"Ax-Battler"
*uses sword*

I feel like I remember playing just a tiny bit of it way way back when I did have a MAME emulator set up.
Maybe i'll do that one day!
