GPU-accelerated 4K video editor and converter to extract snapshot from video, compress video size, cut, merge videos, and convert any video to MP4, HEVC, H264, MKV, AVI, MP3, etc.
If you need to extract images from a video, VLC can help you.
VLC is probably the best media player out there and it is able to extract frames from a video and save them as images. This can be handy of you want, for example, to make a GIF animation.
I showed how to make a GIF animation in these two videos:
With the Command Line • Making an animated GIF...
With GIMP • How to make a GIF with...
To enable frame extraction from a vidoe:
Open VLC - Go to the Preferences - Select All settings - Scroll to the video Filters - and edit the Scene Filter.
When you finished with these settings, scroll up, click on Filters and enable Scene video filter.
Now when you play a video frames will be extracted and saved as images.
When you have extracted all the frames you were interested in, go back to the Preferences - All - Video Filters - and disable Scene video filter.
Because if you forget to do this, VLC will keep extracting frames from every single video you play.
I hope you will appreciate this feature of VLC.

Great insight on VLC functionality but I still not able to understand the formula you used to convert into png sequence images. I have 11 sec video at 25 fps. I tried your formula by putting a recording ratio of 10 but it gave me weird output, missing frames that is. Can you please explain the formula, would really appreciate?
sorry to be offtopic but does anybody know a tool to get back into an instagram account??
I somehow forgot the login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Gatlin Huxley instablaster :)
@Oakley Curtis thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Oakley Curtis it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much, you really help me out !
You forgot to mention that after you do all the changes you need to close and then open VLC again for it to start working
thank-you!
Thank God I decided to search in Comments to see if there was something he missed. Very important detail for a newbie like me. Thank you very much for sharing!
Thank you sooo much! I was about to give up.
T H A N K Y O U ! ! ! ! 🙏
tks!!!!
Great video. Very clear and extremely helpful. I am a windows user, at first I typed in ‘jpeg’ as file type. That didn’t work for me. But ‘jpg’ worked.
Just wanna say i appreciate this video so much. covid quarantine got me feelin so angry and then this video for some weird reason made me happy LOL.
Need to convert videos to images so I searched and found your channel. Thanks a ton! Life saver!😊👍
it works, only it didn't figure out how to put in a custom directory also, you should specified more clearly, how less frame you put in you're recording ratio the more images you wil get, if you put 1, you will get all you're images, if you put 20, you will have 1 image every 20 frames, this is for windows
I want to extract the whole frames for a 240fps video, what recording should i use?
I had no idea VLC had such a function. Thanks!
iDealshare VideoGo also helps to convert video frames to image. Simply add the video file to iDealshare VideoGo, and click Profile drop download button to select jpg, png or gif from Picture and Animation category, and click Convert button.
dude this helped me immensely thank you!
Thank You so much for this, I have always wanted to be able to do this with VLC but have never known how to.
Thanks so much I did not expect the vlc to do so much
great video, thanks! can you avoid duplication? can it detect the changes in the scene?
That was incredible
FIX: I tried the VLC method and it does extract frames from videos but I couldn't get it to export ALL the frames. I had a 25 second clip at 24fps which equals out to 600 frames. No matter what I changed the ratio to in VLC's scene filter I couldn't get that number of frames extracted. The fix I found was to download Davinci Resolve 18 for free and used the 'Saver' node under the Fusion tab at the bottom and exported a bunch of sequences as a test. I did a PNG sequence as well as a JPG and a JPEG. All of the sequences had the 600 frames as expected.
Great video, thnx mate.
I am thankful to you for this video…it is very useful to me…great work 👍👏
Simple and straightforward explanation. ++++++++++++++
wow that was a pretty good video
Wow !! I didn't know this !! Amazing !! Thanks for sharing !!
Thanks for watching. Happy to hear it was new for you.
Great video. Very clear and extremely helpful.
This informative video gave me more than what I expected. What a pleasant surprise. Thank you very much Average Linux User
. You made my day.
Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment
@@AverageLinuxUser thank you for your response. I really appreciate it.
Realllly great thanks to you ,helped me alot....hope you best wishes
I'm not getting any images, I double check the directory it was saving to and nothing.
I know its not working and i need to save into pictures with PNG
This is the best way on Linux ua-cam.com/video/YpH6lc8X8BY/v-deo.html
run it as admin
@@nothingtoseehere2224 yup that did the trick. thank you
I can't run as admin when using Ubuntu. I get the following error:
VLC is not supposed to be run as root. Sorry.
If you need to use real-time priorities and/or privileged TCP ports
you can use vlc-wrapper (make sure it is Set-UID root and
cannot be run by non-trusted users first).
Thank you so much!
thanks mate it worked
Thank you for sharing this info. I am a Linux mint Cinnamon user. I used to take a screenshot just to take an image out of a video. This is a time saver. ANd Yes. I wont forget to untick the "scene video filter." 🤣Thanks again.
Excellent tutorial, that saved me a lot of time. Isn't VLC just wonderful!!!. Thanks again
Thank you. Truly saves a lot of hassle
Thank you! :)
Can't get this to work, no matter what I do (have tried running VLC as administrator and closing and reopening after changing the settings).
Some maybe reset settings? Or reinstall vlc
Must open VLC as ADMIN
What If I Want To Extract Every Single Frame?
Then put recording ratio to 1
I'm on Mac, it wasn't initially working for me because I typed the file path wrong (the step at 1:32). Leave it blank, it will spit the files out into your pictures folder (Mac HD > User > Pictures).
i am on mac too but it doesnt work!! i cant find the documents. what should i do in the file path?
@@pator6604 Sorry it has been a while since I did this. Did you try what I said and left the file path box blank? Otherwise you can go to Macintosh HD in Finder, click the search icon and search for whatever the filename prefix is to see where it is putting the images. Then you can right click one and choose Show in enclosing folder to take you to the folder where VLC is putting them.
Thank you so much. Subscribed!
thanks brother works 100%... MAKE SURE YOU RUN VLC AS ADMIN if it's not working for you...
This is very good. I am using linux mint with a vlc media player. I think I found what I wanted.
This was very helpful
Thanks man!
Can I extract still photos from a .mov file that will not play? thanks
That sound when the bar of Average Linux User pops in and out, it's MAGICAL. It sounds like its coming from the far left beyond my laptop. I have no other speakers. Even when I turn my head it sounds like it's coming from outside the laptop.
Anyone else has that?
Average Linux User, can you upload the sfx? Thank you!
Hi! Altough I am a windows user, I found this video very helpful. Thanks!
Thank for your video. But I have an "extended" problem, I have over 200 short videos. Is there a possibility to save frames form these videos to separate folders. ATN ONCE, without changing setting for every video? Thanx.
I set the ratio to 1 on a 60 FPS 5 seconds long clip, and I only got 17 pictures! help!
same, Idk the solution yet either.
Your video is great!!!!! VLC is great too!!!! thank you.
Thank you very much
Whenever I stop the video the converting of the frames doesnt stop,(it keeps making the same frame over and over until you close vlc) did this happen to anyone?
yes idk why
who else is using this for a meshroom scan?
Using RealityCapture :D
Unexpected coincidence. Definitely some smart people here.
Lol I know I'm late but I had no idea anyone else was using this for that
Mhhmm
if the source is not your camera, how are you finding the lens focal length and sensor width data?
Thanks for making this as an answer to my question. Do you know if this can handle long videos like 120 minutes (172,800 images) ?
very useful! thanks so much
La vidéo beug donc les images sont flou comment faire ? J'ai essayé plusieurs format merci
Where the photo is saved i can't get them didnt work
Thanks for posting..... and the don't forget to remove the filter...
Works great run vlc as admin, thanks E Riv for that correction!!!
You are a life saver. Thanks :)
I can't get it to record 1:1 for a video at 60fps. I get perhaps 1:3. My pc has decent ram. Help??
try changing the file format to "bmp" as per the comment section here: www.isimonbrown.co.uk/vlc-export-frames/
Otherwise there's another suggestion, check the size of the actual video and instead of using -1 for both field values for height and width, try using the video's actual height and width. The bmp file format worked for me.
Thanks, you've saved me hours!
Scene filter is missing. Can't find it. Using windows 7
Hi thanks for this. Will it save in high quality though? Thanks
Everytime I try to set the frame ratio to 1 to get every frame, it keeps skipping frames. I even tried dividing up the video I wanted the frames from to smaller clips, but I still get the same results.
try changing the file format to "bmp" (rather than png) as per the comment section here: www.isimonbrown.co.uk/vlc-export-frames/

@@ummwho8279 Oh, thanks! That helps a lot! I'll try it.
@@ummwho8279 saving as .bmp works for me too. thanks for the advice
heyy, i am using kubuntu and have customized it a bit and now i wanna blur the application menu panel but for that i will have use breez global theme and if i switch to it everything i've customized will be ruined....help me plss
This does not work for me, I do not know why. When I play the video no frames are extracted. The folder remains empty.
Me too
thanks for this video, how can i convert many videos at same time? i tried but it put the new frames on the old video frames.
Thanks for the video, I'm wondering of you could help me please, the video freezes and skips a few frames while the audio plays perfectly when scene video filter is on, is there a way to solve this?
I am using VLC 3.0.8. How come there is no resemblance between your menus and mine? Shouldn't you start your video with specifying the version of your VLC?
If you do this image in the website, will there be copyright issues? Please tell...
So there is no way to make it a single image with grid of frames instead of too many separate files?
thank you so much for this video ! very helpful
My VLC plays videos really choppy and laggy and that's how my frames come out...any advice on how to resolve this?
Kinda just makes a ton of frames even without the video running, but basically works (after you restart VLC like DeadLock said)
it works but the pictures are lower quality than the video idk how to fix it
Every time I extract the frames from the video, they get replaced by a new one! And at the end there's only one image of the end!
Thank you so much :)
very good and simple.
Halp. I want to convert a 240fps video. I want to obtain all of the frames from a 2s video. what recording rate should i use?
In Windows if it is not working just reset options and run as Administrator and use simple path like C:\test
TY BRO
if i needed it in my downloads folder would i just put /Downloads/?
Awesome, thanks !
It works but it overwrites every frame because of the name. how do i set up automatic frame numbering?
Something is missing; I did everything to the letter, but the was nothing in my folder at all. I watched somebody else's video, it was the same...... did this, did that still no result... I've got After Effects, I tried watching video using that, but it was impossible to follow due to a strong Indian accents. Slowing them down didn't help either.
doesn't work in Windows doesn't know why did everything like in the video. But when I look at the folder where vlc should store the images after i play the video its still empty :((
i follow the steps but nope no images i know this works ive done before its just been a while i have rewatched and retried i don't seem to be doing anything wrong but i still can't get images
I was stuck for a while until I realized I needed to save my preferences before playing the video. Could that help in your case too?
@@unikadas i tried that
@@evilkoolade run the video in administrator and make sur the path are "/" and not "\"
@@evilkoolade it's work for me
Maybe it will be easier to do this way ua-cam.com/video/YpH6lc8X8BY/v-deo.html
thanks. i'm really happy
But can you turn the pictures back to video ?
does it need some special directiry? I cant seem to turn my mp4 into png I changed directory name and still empty folder? what do I do? I did everything else here
Great, it works
capture distinctive frames in video?
is it possible for you to update this video. this one was very well done.
Life saver!
How do I put them back into a video I made a video I would like to remove my scare from the video so people don’t know who I’m when I upload it on UA-cam

I'm not able to find the Scene video filter under Preferences and then video...?! maybe my version is older and its called something else...any suggestions?
thanks.
i have a corrupted .mov file from a dashcam that i need to fix and at least get images from - any suggestions ?? I have tried VLC, Stellar and Remo but none worked for me?
Only One image is being extracted in the file
The video plays and doesnt save my pictures anywhere
Thank you.
Is this real VIDEO EXTRACTION?...Or just SCREEN CAPTURE? Big difference...
Using VLC for more than 10 years now. Didn´t know that was possible to do that with the progam.
I believe there are many other features of VLC we both don't know 😉
I think you´re right :D
I have some frames I had been edited them and i wanna to make them video how I can do that
You can try this way ua-cam.com/video/DAP3atb_n6A/v-deo.html
