In the game against the Pacers when his face hit the floor it fractured his right cheek. What a lot of people don't know is he spent the night before that game in the hospital in traction for his back and struggled to get dressed out for that game. When he went to the locker room his teammates thought that he was permanently finished.

When Larry walked back on the court after breaking his cheekbone with that fall, he was already at the end of his career with his debilitated spine and surgeries on both feet. Everyone thought that bad fall was it for him. He still came out with a broken face and won the playoff game against the Pacers without any pain meds or a break; he was mostly pissed off seeing Chuck Person make shots and obnoxiously celebrating as Larry watched the game from the locker room. They don't build players like him anymore.

Larry's *GENUINE friendship* with Magic Johnson was awesome to see 👀, on and off the court. Oh yeah, Larry also had *Rookie of the Year* as well 😎

You two are very neat people. You can respect people for who they are. Thank you. I love Bird. I'll repeat a story an 8th grade team member from Larry's high school shared. He said, when Larry was a PE assistant he helped the 8th grade team understand the value of working hard on their game. Prior to their warmup, the coach had Larry (who was a senior) shoot baskets while jumping on a trampoline 35 feet away from the goal. For every basket he made, the team would get one less warmup lap around the gym. Larry made 7 out of 10 tries and they only had to do 3 laps.

2:24 - One fun thing about that between the legs pass - it was through the legs of Joe Barry Carroll. After Bird's rookie year the Celtics had the number one overall pick in the draft. They traded it to Golden State for their pick (no. 3 overall) plus Robert Parish. Golden State drafted Joe Barry Carroll who ended up having a decent career (he made the all star team once) but nothing special. Meanwhile, with the 3rd pick the Celtics drafted Kevin McHale and the Celtics had their Hall of Fame front court of Bird, McHale and Parish - the greatest frontcourt trio in NBA history.

The old adage about not poking a sleeping bear definitely applied to Bird. The year Larry played three quarters of the game against the Sonics was the year that the Celtics only lost one home game all season and it was to the Sonics. The playoff game against the Pacers when he broke his cheekbone was the deciding game of their playoff round. When the Pacers arrived at the Gardens, Chuck Person, whose nickname was the Rifleman, said to the press, "You tell them the Rifleman is here and he came to do some Bird hunting". Larry wasn't about to let that go.

The game against the Pacers when he fell onto the court and broke his face, then came back, he was sitting in the locker listening to the game. He said, "I couldn't leave those guys out there all by themselves. So I had to go back in." That's funny to me because he's talking about the whole team or just him, and he thought "they were by themselves" and needed help. He was right, they did, but it's funny his mentality.
Part of Jokic's game reminds me a lot of Bird. He has the same shot, and he passes all these crazy passes. One thing that's is unique to Jokic is his water polo pass. He used to play water polo and that's why he throws those long over the head full court passes the way he does.
I expect Jokic to get at least one more league MVP, at least one more chip and finals MVP.
Jordan played against Larry from '84 to '92. His record against Larry's Celtics was 11-23. They just couldn't quite handle the Celtics with Larry.

    Correction:
Larry isnt in that conversation *_among young people._*
Its not your fault, youve not lived that long, you really only know your era and even the few youngsters who actually study the older stuff, alot of them cant really relate to it so, your era will inevitably be what you talk about.
Thats what so great with UA-cam.
Whn its not just reading stats and articles, but you can actually see it with your own eyes, you get it.
Id say Larrys popularity and recognitiong has shot through the roof over the past couple of years.
    Well earned no doubt.
Anyone over 40 who is being honest, and not just a butthurt fanboi of some other GOAT candidate, is mentioning Larry Bird in that conversation... you cant NOT if youre living in reality.
Hell, every single HoF:er from the 70s, 80s and 90s *_ALWAYS_* bring Bird up.
Everyone with a different opinion and viewpoint but the one thing they all agree on is that Larry, without a doubt, one of _the_ best players to ever set foot on the hardwood.
Jordan, LeBron, Dominique, Magic, Kareem, Dr.J, Cooper, Worthy, Reggie Miller and ofcourse his team mates, Bill Walton, McHale, Parish and Ainge, Pat Riley, Gary Peyton, Byron Scott, the list goes on forever, these are just some of the absolute legendary names who has Larry in their top5 of all time.
Lebron even put Larry in his top three when asked and he mentioned Bird before Jordan and Dr.J.
That doesnt necessarily mean he ranks them in that order but what it does mean is that when asked who the three greatest ballers of all time were, he thought of Larry before he thought of Jordan and Julius.
The first name that popped into his head when asked was *_Larry Bird._*

That pacers game, I believe was in 1988, if so, Larry had a busted back, double achillies injury that required surgery in both feet, that wasn't done yet, Broncial Pneumonia, then he dribbled his face off the floor resulting in a concussion, double vision and a fractured bones in the face. There is a interview that R. Miller who I didn't realize was on the Pacer at the time, turned towards a teammate when Larry came back and said "FUCK" Larry played wotha litteral handicap his last 5 years. Any ONE of those injuries would have benched a player today much less all of them at the same time.

Bird lost no game in the eastern finals, but i think the in total, Larry had a 17-11 wins in regular games. Most of the losses came in Birds later years, when he was a wreck already(not game wise). The Celtics told Larry, he can play like LeBron does today, you can sit out as many games you want, just play when you feel right, for 4.5 million. Bird said no, if i can't play or give 💯, i don't do it!!❤

Don't forget this: Larry Bird said that it was "disrespectful" to put a white guy on him to guard him. He was offended if there wasn't a "brother" sent to play defense on him. The deeper you dive on the Bird story, the more respect you will have for the man. Pat Riley said this about Bird: "If I get my pick of players to take the shot that wins the game, I'll take Michael Jordan. If I pick the one to take the shot to save my life, I'll take Larry Bird."

He made like 23 in a row the first or second 3 pt contest, he won the first three 3 pt contests. Larry is just shy of 6'10", how tall is Jokic?

Jokic …is not the second Larry Bird…the summer Bird was drafted …playing a baseball game…he dislocated his forefinger on his shooting hand so bad it was bent at a 45 degree angle toward his thumb…and one….he lost his touch for the ball…and two…the doctors were never able to straighten it…and in ‘85..while helping his mother put in a driveway…his back gave out while shoveling gravel…and he was never the same..he retired 8 years later..he sat out 12 months after double Achilles surgery..and while playing 13 years…12 of those were as a all star..1980 Rookie of the Year..3 time champion..2 time Finals MVP..3 straight MVP..and only 2 other players did that…centers Bill Russel and Wilt Chamberlain…after retiring he coached Indianapolis to the playoffs and was voted Coach of the Year..after moving to the front office…he was named Executive of the Year…no other player in history can say that…

Larry gave a fck one time what the colour of someone's skin was. During a match against the Bulls he complained to the Bull's coach that they were being disrespectful towards him. The coach asked why and Larry told him that they were being disrespectful towards him by sending a white boy to guard him. 😁

Fyi guys, i heard you speak about mj vs Bird and Magic. Please understand. mj played the bad boys in the playoffs in, 88, 89, 90 and 91. The.Pistons won in 88, 89 and 90 winning nba titles in 89 and 90. mj never won a thing until Magic, Bird and Isaiah got old and there bodies broke down.

That second dude he dropped to the floor was none other than Dominique Wilkins. Nobody had nothing for Bird. He told you what, when and where while calling the play and delivered. Swept Michael Jordan TWICE in the playoffs. 0-6

A good comparison to Jokic is Bill Walton, the original passing center. With less injuries, of course. Bill was a great player, but broken half his career. Luka is a better comparison to Larry, though Larry is still better than Luka. That may change, but for now Luka has some growing to do.

I could go on and on about Larry Bird and why he's the GOAT 🐐 which he is, but I want to address Steph Curry. Everybody talks about his 3-point shooting but do you know what?...... He was 2 for 7 in the Three-Point contest that he entered. He lost five times and people are going to talk about him is the greatest 3-point shooter???!!
    I don't f****** think so.
Larry Bird is not only the greatest 3-point shooter in contests going back to back-to-back but he is the greatest clutch 3-point shooter in the history of the game.
No one can dispute that. 🔥🤘

In Jordans statistically best year, I believe it was 1988, He won MVP, Allstar MVP, DPOY, The Scoring Title and the Dunk Contest.
Im pretty sure he won 6 titles that year so Im forgetting one.
    But I digress...
That year he played Bird 4 times, he lost 1 - 3.
It _was_ regular season mathes tho as they didnt face eachother in the playoffs.
    But still.
This was PRIME Jordan and _with_ Scottie Pippen.
He also beat EVERYONE else in his younger years, not for the title but he DID beat every other team in the playoffs.
If the excuse is that Jordan was young and not fully developed yet, how did he beat everyone else?
There were atleast 4 or 5 teams in the league that were as strong or at least very close to the Celtics.
The Lakers were fakking MASSIVE, Badboy Pistons actually won the title once or twice in that era.
The 76:ers had Dr.J and Moses Malone, Huston had Hakeem and Olajuwan.
In 1986, against Larry no less, Jordan set the Playoff scoring record of 63 points.
Its not that "young MJ wasnt as good", he was every bit as good... there was just a mean, green killing machine named Larry blocking his path.
He started winning LITERALLY as soon as Bird retired.
Occams Razor would suggest that Jordan not beeing as good in his early years wasnt the problem.
Technically the season before Bird retired but the last year Larry could barely walk, not sure it counts.
Larry was Jodans kryptonite and honestly, I think Larry made him nevous.
Ofc, we will never know for sure cuz Jordan would never admit to that regardless if its true or not.
What we _do_ know is that Jordan has admitted to learning a whole lot from Larry, especially mind games and trash talkiing, psychology in general.
Now why would he do that if he didnt think it was effective?
If Larrys psychological warfare had no effect on him he wouldnt have had an interest in studying it and incorperating it into his own play.

In 5 three point shooting contests…Steph Curry never won…the first 3 years of the contest…Bird won every one..the three point shot only started in 1980…Bird’s first year in the league…so that shot was never practiced in college…but he shot 40 % from 3…50% from the floor..and 90% free throws…2 years in a row…
