Miramar: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Felix Contreras | January 27, 2017 - Some say you have to have loved and lost to appreciate the beauty of the bolero. Since its inception in Cuba in the early 20th century, the music has been designed for thoughtful and emotional consideration of the joys and pains that come with loving someone so intensely, it becomes like a religion to adore that special someone (an actual bolero lyric).
When the members of Richmond, Virginia's Miramar first heard the music of Puerto Rican composer Sylvia Rexach, they were intrigued that she wasn't as well known as other popular bolero writers. So they came up with an album's worth of her songs to cover, and have been wowing audiences across the country with their exquisite renditions of her songs.
When they pulled into NPR to play behind Bob Boilen's desk, Miramar's members made time stop with a performance that swept us off our feet, ably backed by friends of theirs from Richmond who played gorgeous string arrangements behind the band. So turn the lights down low, clear out the living-room carpet and find your dance partner for this one.

Great music of Puertorrican poet/songwriter Sylvia Rexach interpreted by Miramar Boleros: Laura Ann Singh and Rei Alvarez with their splendid, pleasant voices; Marlysse Simmons Argandoña on the keyboard, fellow musicians Hector Bárez, Rusty Farmer and guests on guitar, violins, viola and cello. A most harmonious, excellent presentation.
Beautiful, heartfelt, passionate....bolero!!!
It's sad for non-Spanish speakers because the lyrics are also beautiful!! thanks for this marveouls concert!
absolutely brilliant and perfect in every single way.
Excellent Spanish pronnunciation! (coming from a native Spanish speaker) I liked Miramar's music very much.

listened that songs via both soundcloud and amazon and... what can I say, that IS one of these cases, when live music sounds much better than mastered one. Totally love how these guys perfom, especially Tus Pasos!

The Bolero is a colonization of the soul by itself.

They have a Tiny Desk Concert, but for some reason it's not on this channel anymore. Some random UA-camr reuploaded it.
Holy shit i came @ 6:50 its so well composed with the little yet constant crescendos, and the cello solo is a great follow up too. Theres something about harmonizing vocalists that always attracts in any genre. They sing so gooood. Also that keyboard solo shit is mesmerizing.
I swear I just wished hispanic Zooey Deschanel into existence before seeing this this video upload.
She looks more like Krysten Ritter IMO.

Love the band's performance but I'm commenting to complain about either the camera work or the editing of this video. Normally the editing and camera work of the Tiny Desk concerts is fantastic. Usually we get great close up of the artist playing his or her instrument to really get a sense of their craft. Usually we get unique angle to view the performers. Usually the camera angle vary throughout the performances. But in this one, it's very sub par. I mean, on the very 1st song, how in the hell do you not get a shot of the guitar player's hands strumming that guitar so amazingly? Every time the far right camera person's shot was selected in this video, they were moving away from the guitarist's instrument on on his face. He's not singing; show the instrument! Same for when the strings are playing, we get the same slow pan. The 2-shots into 1-shots for the singers is also robotic. I don't know why this bothered me so much, but I think it's only because the camera work/editing in the past has been at such a high level so this stuck out to me.
Jon Forsythe
Probably was in a Trance, mesmerised by the performance! 😉
Saludos desde México!! Como siempre NPR presentando excelentes propuestas musicales!!!
by the way...is that guy the vocal from BIO RITMO, the salsa band?

You should have Rob Scallon come on here!
Wow, I am normally not the kind of person to comment on pretty girls in videos like this because it is super creepy, but she is legit one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen.

This is fab. But I believe the song is spelled "Urgencia."
Anyone know what the pin on the guys jacket is?
a 45 record adapter
Can someone please tell me what the lead singers coat pin means?? It is also featured in the upper left hand corner of the NPR book shelf. The only thing I can think of is an adaptation of the Isle of Man symbol.
google "45 adapter"
Thank you so much!!! That was bothering me for weeks!

Gosh these songs from Cuban Revolution there's no conection with the songs from NPR
Please smack the camera person. Stop moving and cutting off the heads of the musicians.

would love to hear this without the vocal, it destroys it for me
