Steeve stays behind at the drop pod because he still has to find and save Karl.
Loud screeches echo throughout the dark caverns. Karl badly injured, with 79 Nitra, unable to call for ammo and medical supplies he so desperately needed. Karl throws his last flare; to just see what will kill him. "For one last Rock N' Stone" he says to himself. As the screeching gets closer, he closes his eyes, waiting for it....But nothing, "what?" he thinks. But at the end of the tunnel he sees......STEEVE! Steeve comes up to Karl with a small chunk of Nitra, just enough to call in the medical supplies and ammo he needs. Karl pets Steeve and calls it in. "Hey, thanks Steeve, how about a Rock N' Stone brother?" Steeve wiggles with enjoyment. "ROCK N' STONE!" Karl yells!
They live to fight another day.
All the Steeve are working together to find Karl
I can imagine Karl has an entire army of left behind Steves, Dorettas, and some BOSCOs.

steeve never dies, steeve is a spirit, or an ideology. steeve is in every grunt you see fit to be steeve. when you leave steeve to stay behind, when his mortal coil perishes, he meets you at the spacerig. he eagerly awaits when he is allowed into a new grunt body. steeve never dies, because he is no single grunt or guard, he is ours to love, so much so that we find hardy vessels for steeve in inhabit to be with us for short amounts of time. when steeves body dies. steeve must regain his strength ( 5min cooldown) before he is ready to be by your side once more. because even the undying spirit of steeve need a little rest now and again
This is my headcanon for the beastmaster perk now. Steeve is the soul of a glyphid grunt that once befriended the dwarves (of his own will) and the beastmaster perk allows him to possess a new vessel.

Yet management allows dwarves to bring loot bugs to the space rig to show off their mission completions. The rig must be infested with these things by now eating all our minerals.

Steeve lives in all glyphids as the spirit of the first grunt charmed by karl. He stays behind to continue his eternal search for his master after he makes sure we are safe.
The part at the end of gunner petting the dead steeve just gives me the vibes of comforting a loving pet in their final moments. Like those emotional videos of old animals on their deathbed just being loved and happy before they go. It goes along with this theory of steeve being the ghost of a tamed glyphid, who probably died being loved and supported a dwarf after defending them. Who got to be loved besides being part of the glyphid hivemind and developed such a strong love he can influence any glyphid that gets love like he did to protect the dwarves who made him feel loved. It shouldn't make me cry but it is, Thank you Steeve!

Beast master isn't a perk that lets you tame a bug, it's a perk that lets you put Steeve soul into a bug that you will get back after Steeve died.

My favorite thing is having Beast Master and Iron Will. I normally play defensively and just try to protect my teammates as much as possible, so Steeve does too. So when I get to pop Iron Will with Steeve it's a rush, and when I go down again Steeve protects me until my teammates revive me.
I stopped using the Steeve perk because I was becoming numb to every one I lost to other glyphids or missions endings. I couldn’t take the heartbreak anymore
