I tried opening mine and thought what the heck why did I get black paper! So before going any further I figured I’d search UA-cam to figure out how to open! Thank you for this video! 😂. Don’t know what I’d do without UA-cam!
Same Here!! I got an amazing deal at Jerry's ArtaRama and was so excited - until I opened... who wants to work on black paper ??? UA-cam to the Rescue!
Lol this happened to me today. Thought it was black paper. Luckily I found this YT channel in time. Otherwise I probably would have ruined the whole block. Thanks!
Thank you for this video. I did the same thing with my first block of Arches... thought I got black. Haha! I have had others ask me if you can paint with gouache on the black protective sheet. Do you know if it is 100% cotton, also? Have you ever tried painting on it?
Thank you for the video. Before seeing this video, I bought W.A. Portman Hot Press Watercolor Paper Block. The pages do not come apart easily at all! I use a pallet knife but it is so hard to get the knife in between the pages, it ends up ripping part of the page. I’m so disappointed. I guess I need to get a different watercolor block. Do a lot of brands have this same problem? Thank you!
No, it won't. Paint on the top paper, let it dry fully, then remove it like she shows in the video. The paper beneath the one you are painting on will not be affected. The paper is too thick for the water/paint to soak through.
I don't know from experience but can you use your nails? I know with a regular pad paper sometimes the gum sticks to the edges and I just us my nails to take it off by simply laying the edge of the paper on my pointer finger then pressing my thumbnail on the paper and pull the paper out with my other hand to scrape the gum off. If that doesn't work then I take a Xacto knife and a metal ruler to it.
I have acrylic nails so picking it isn’t really it for me, but i found using the Tombow mono sand erasers on the side makes it so you atleast cant see it so im able to make prints that look nice!
I think it may be your resolution. I tried looking at this video on a phone, tablet and two computers and was able to see the corners. Thank you for your comment.
Nice video, but sadly ruined so many sheets by splitting them or accidentally cutting through the middle of the paper. Much less frustration to tape down. Would of scrapped so many paintings if I would of used blocks.

Same for me!
Thank you for the video, I was scared to figure it out myself. Your awesome!
Thanks seemed like a silly question and happy to find that it was on youtube. And I did first think did I order black, LOL.
Thank you for creating this video. I was so confused when I opened the package.
You are welcome. I will start adding more tips and tricks to make painting easier.
I found 2 blocks for $3 at the thrift store!
OH MY GOD SO LUCKYYY
@@squiggs4412 Thrift stores are really a goldmine for art supplies! Most people there have no idea what they’re pricing lol 😂
@@saint.hudson13 brooo the thift stores near me don’t even have art supplies 😭
Oh my goodness same! I just opened mine right now but I found it for 3.99 at goodwill!
I just found two today 😭
I did the same thing when I saw black. Then look at top and saw white. Thank heaven!

Thank you! Yes, at first I panicked thinking that had accidentally bought black paper and then couldn’t figure out how to access the paper.
That's exactly what I thought when I unwrapped the package... "I did not order black paper" LOL🤭

You saved my life ! Thanks
Thank you so much!!!
Um I wonder if we paint it there without peeling off the paper one by one, wont the watercolor paper under the one we are painting on be affected?

I was certainly alarmed and thought no wonder I got a good price 😂
How do you get that black gummy glue off the sides of the paper? I know it doesn't show under a frame, but it shows on the edge of greeting cards.

Good question. I flake off what I can with my fingernail. That is the only thing I don't like about using Arches watercolor blocks.
I have the same question. Such a good paper with this ugly finish. I use my fingernails but, I'm not able to remove it all.

The sand eraser sounds like a brilliant idea to remove the black on the edges.
Me three! ;-) Liz M
I tear up the cover, then after i checked this vid ,i know i was fcked up
I wanted to see how you navigated the corners, but that was mostly off camera, out of view past the edges of the screen.

I tear mine evertime☹️☹️☹️
I tried arches and I hate it, like painting on fabric, I feel like I've done embroidery rather than a painting lol
I like it because I like to layer my paintings and use wet on wet. Arches is very durable for this type of painting. What brand do you use?
If you use layers when using watercolor, the Arches water color block is more durable. It will hold more water.
