    I've been wanting to modify the steering on this glider for a while now and today was finally the day! Along with changing the lengths of each line, I removed the bungee and fixed the pulley directly to the riser. Although 2D steering comes standard on the Ozone Freeride, wings like the Spyder can be easily modified to have 2D.

  • @snakevera

    Now with 2D tied in does this mean you have to be cautious about accelerated flight (speedbar/trims)? I know the Roadster 3 doesn't recommend the use of brakes in combination with tip steering because of the reflex profile increasing the risk of collapse.

    Are you able to sense an unintentional stall at all before it happens? In your hands, or gut?

    • @niconico3907
      @niconico3907 5 років тому

      Yes, when slowing down to stall speed, you feel much less wind in your face, and nearlh no wind noise. You also have to put a lot of pressure on the brakes to stall. Beginner wing have a special design that make it hard to stall because of the amount of brake pressure and distance you need to apply to stall the wing.

    Quick Questions: What's the lifespan of a wing? Also is there any kind of maintenance for the wing?.

    • @niconico3907
      @niconico3907 5 років тому

      Life of a wing depends on lot of factors.
      On the fabric there is a special coating making it airtight, when the coating wears off, the air goes through the fabric more and more easily. When the coating is gone, the wing doesn't hold enough pressure inside, so it tend to not keep its shape as well as before. There is also less lift, controls are not as good.
      There are a number of factor contributing to the coating wearing off:quality of the coating, UV light from the sun, if you use the wing at the beach, sand will get in the wing , in the stitching and you can never get it all out.its like you sand blast the coating.
      There is also folding, if you fold the wing always in the same spot it damage it.
      Aging of the wing can also reduce tear resistance.
      About the lines, some lines carry more weight than other especially under high G loads in tight turn. Depending on material used for the lines, some can get longer and some can get shorter. This is a problem because just a few cm or inches can change the angle of attack of the wing, and change flight caracteristics, making more prone to collapses or stalls.
      On high performance wing, some people replace the lines every 2 years.
      Wing manufacturers advise to send the wing to a professional checker once a year, depending on use. They check air tightness of the fabric, tear resistance, adjust lines lenght, choose one line and check breaking strenght. After they send you a paper saying which % of life left in them.
      I would says a wing can last around 200 to 300hours, depends if you want to fly with a not so safe wing anymore, or if you prefer to buy nice new wing.
      I hope it answers your question.

    On the comment that people get upset when you use the term "acro" for aerobatics, I had an A&P instructor who would go mental on anyone that used "motor" and "engine" interchangeably, or referred to jet fuel as "gas." To his credit on the latter, I have had to defuel several aircraft because the customer said "gas" and the line guy was either too stupid or too poorly trained to actually look at the engines.
