Safe Place for Youth (SPY) Helping Homeless Youth in Venice Beach

  • I first connected with Safe Place for Youth (SPY) around eight years ago. I believe it was their social media volunteer that reached out to me and asked that I connect with their executive director Alison Hurst t. They took me out to lunch and since that moment, Alison has been one of my favorite people. In a sector that's often fueled by political agendas, Alison's candor is refreshing. She tells it like it is. Alison also genuinely cares for homeless youth.
At the time, Safe Place for Youth did even have a location in Venice Beach. Now, they have a wonderful building where they are able to help over a hundred homeless youth every day.
I love Safe Place for Youth, which many of the kids now call SPY. I have visited a few times. It's a happy place full of love. Because SPY is just a day center, watching the homeless youth leave around 5pm is so very sad. A lot can happen to young adults out on the streets.
The good news is that the Los Angeles City Council approved a Bridge Home, which is a temporary housing facility that will have 54 beds dedicated to homeless youth. I love that Councilmember Mike Bonin visited with the youth at SPY to get their insight on the bridge housing's design and support services.
In full disclosure, Invisible People is working with Los Angeles to help humanize homelessness. We were given no instructions except to do what we do best and that is to empower homeless people to share their own stories. Our work features the raw and unfiltered stories of homeless people. I have to give lots of respect to Mike Bonin supporting this type of storytelling and for genuinely wanting homeless people's voice to be heard.
One of the many highlights of this video is near the end when we talk to two formerly homeless youth that are now living in a host home. As far as I know, Safe Place for Youth (SPY) is one of the first homeless youth organizations that connect people who have a spare room with homeless youth. It's truly amazing! With homeless numbers increasing and the affordable housing crisis getting worse, we need to figure out creative ways to end homelessness. Hearing from these two young adults really sold me on the host home model!

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as UA-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

I agree with what Allison said. Alot of people do complain about the homeless but aren't doing crap to help out. So if you are one of those people who do that, then either help out or quit complaining

I'm really impressed with the SPY program. What a wonderful idea. They offer help in several areas. Being able to bring their pets that's really good. People need their pets for emotional support. I love the art and music program. Everyone is so powerful, positive and caring effectively working with the youth. Also the new 54 beds that will be available soon. That is such a true blessing it warms my heart. Caring people accomplishing true healing among their clients.
Thank you Mark for being a voice for the homeless. Your videos provide so much insight. They inspire people to get involved in their area of the country. I appreciate all your efforts. You are such a Joyful Giver. Take care 🎥😊

I like this kind of video, because it shows us how our helping is actual being carried out. We see the faces of those who are homeless in most of the videos, and that gives them a voice, and that's great. This video lets us visually see the impact of how our help is actually helping the homeless, and being put into practice; the solutions being brought to fruition, and that's also great. Thanks for this video, Mark. Very interesting video, too.

If my city had a Host Home program, I would do it in a heartbeat...at least until my house sells (it's going to be a while). I hate the thought of young kids being on the streets facing the dangers of assault, robbery, or worse because of the areas they stay at night....places I'd be afraid to go during the daytime! 😥

This is such an empowering video for other communities, Mark. Every community in the world, should get behind similar programs. I can't even begin to imagine the work involved, just to organize this type of program but we can see, that it can actually be done. At least during the day, the youth do not feel isolated and I am sure that many have formed friendships and support networks. 54 beds is going to make a huge difference in 54 young lives.

i hope this idea spreads to Europe too. A lot of people think about homeless people as ' normal' and ' have always been. But it s our current form of capitalism which puts profit over people. Whereas it is really better for a flourishing capitalism/economy if people have an affordable home and feel safe. It s gonna be interesting to see in the next couple of years how programms like this and others will change the way we look at homeless people.

Think part of learning team work and social skills can be done with sports and games that aren't violent. Ultimate Frisbee is perfect and has tournaments with cash prizes, chess could be another area of focus. But what I would love is a mycology "mushroom" club to work with a shelter so they can grow their own food. These clubs can give new options to teens.

Also a vid called benefits of the Lions Mane mushroom and how it helps maintain mental abilities could teach shelters to grow and serve brain food with help from a mycology club.
