Every once in a while In stumble Back to Björk. Yoga, Hunter beams me Back to my youth. Feelings between sadness, anger, fear, Joy. Feels every time Like hugging a late relative, if this makes Sense to anyone.
I remember being in high school in the 90's total metalhead but i also adored bjork. I think her influence fed into many genre to come and she still is such a enigmatic amazing artist
It's honestly freaky to watch this - I was absolutely obsessed with her in 1997, but I never had access to this kind of video with insight on her song-making process. It just makes me appreciate her even more. It's also interesting to hear her thoughts on the first 2 albums, which are by far my favorite. She refers to them as the throwback songs before she moves onto her next phase, but to me I loved the more natural sounds with less electronic stuff that was so prevalent in the late 90s.
SAAAAAAME! I discovered Homogenic at a listening station in Virgin Megastore in Times Square New York, and by track 3 I was convinced this album is the meaning of life. and then I later bought her earlier stuff. I’ve been in love ever since.
I discovered her with this album in 1997 and I can honestly say she saved my life. I found in her music the energy and courage to live. Some sort of spiritual connexion as a teenager then. To me she was like indigenous people regarding instinct and wisdom.
I've been listening to Bjork for over 25 years now - first time I heard her I was 14, camping out with friends and listening to new music, I'm 41 now and still regard her as one of my favourite artists, if not my all time favourite - something connected that first time, and still resonates now - it goes beyond words....
I love her, the music is just a bonus. It was love at first sight, back when I saw her on MV doing Hit with The Sugarcubes. Must be almost 40 years now.
"I haven't got a clue if it'll work or not, but you have to try" words to live by. The love and respect I have for this woman (and that magnificent brain of hers) knows no bounds. What I would do to have even an ounce of the creativity and drive that she has still to this day!
Bjork is unique. Her musical style is her own and defines her. I like listening to her sometimes. Her style isn't a mainstay for my personal taste, but I appreciate her work.
@@ItUnidentified I’ll bite, I love Bjork, probably one of my favourite artists, but I listen to her only occasionally these days, theres so much good music to get lost in, different genres - I’ll usually come back to artists like David Bowie, Prince, Radiohead, Nina Simone, Jorge Ben, Gorguts, Iron Maiden, Slowdive, XTC, Cocteau Twins, Charles Mingus, Judas Priest, The Cure, The Smiths, Talking Heads, The Kinks, The Chameleons, Velvet Underground, Aphex Twin, Gas, Low, Jeff Buckley, Sigur Ros, Talk Talk, Brian Eno, etc
I love watching how she records her vocal like she sings it live. And she also sings in tune. Bjork is a true singer and composer thru and thru. I also agree when she mentions 'I make pop music not for educated or elite people'. Well...her music is a pop music for people who loves music.
you're hearing the vocals after processing. There's already pitch correction and echo and all that added to what you hear in this video. Pitch correction has been on almost all music since the 80s even if you cant evidently hear it, nobody is perfectly on pitch
What you see is what you get with Bjork, which is why I love her. So intelligent and so talented and a real artist who isn't fake or manipulates the media or lies about her past. Sending Iceland lots of love from Scotland ❤️🏴🇮🇸
That hook 'I thought I could organize freedom, how Scandinavian of me' into the chorus where she sings those counter melodies is 15 seconds of sheer brilliance

@@marcushunt1414 I totally get it xx I've had to lean on Björk's music a lot since I first heard her when I was 16. I was dragged into going to a party with folk I thought were my friends at the time. I was always the quiet awkward one. I was just floating from room to room, through groups of faces and ciggy smoke, because the people I came with left me on my own. Eventually, I came round to the living room, and there was a wee television on and it was Björk's video Hyperballed, which had the lyrics too. I was so captivated, I sat there on the floor, right in the middle of the room. I wasn't prepared for the lyrics in that particular song, to hit and run through me like an 18 wheeler. I don't exactly know what she meant for the song to mean, but it hit me hard, because at the time, I was being physically and mentally abused at home by my mother, And being bullied but other folk. I was in a very dark place. Then there came Björk and her music. Got me through so much shite, I still get choked up.
@@Depplova81 That's really so beautiful to hear! Your experience with Hyperballed really resonates, it was the first song I listened to intentionally by Bjork and I still remember every second of that experience 20 yrs later. I owe so much happiness and inspiration to Bjork, her purity in her approach is so refreshing and she continues to amaze me by how much SOUL she can pump into electronic music and make it such an emotional experience. Yeah, she gets me through every day in some way I think :)
When my niece was 10 or 11 she would always be singing some song or another from the latest kids movie, you know, like little mermaid etc.. I gave her this album for Christmas that year, she loved it, she started singing Bjorks songs, my brother and his wife were sooo thankful.
Got chills so many times during this video. Unfinalized product, and still moves me in such an ethereal way. Been about 20 years since I discovered Bjork - hearing her music takes me right back to that musical flora that swept my brain away to a realm that I couldn't access in my little physical world. Amazing that those feelings feel fossilized in amber.
This videos brings us so close to the raw sounds of her voice and intimacy when she is at a familiar place, a home, singing, gesturing , smiling, talking, feels like we are there, having the privilege to be close to an amazing talent
I listened a LOT to Björk in the 90s and just recently got back to rediscovering her music. (What an amazing soul she is!) Back when I first listened to Homogenic, I thought to myself "Wow, that really has an Icelandic feel to it. - I wonder if she's trying to reclaim her roots?" A couple of days ago, watching a couple of documentaries on her career, it turned out that was exactly what she was doing. Funny to have that question answered like 25 years later. :)
God. Bjork is just such a treat. I feel like the world is a better place because she's in it. a beautiful little bird, singing sweet tunes for everyone to enjoy, and just being such a delight.
If you've never heard of Bjork til now.... THIS is the vid you need to watch to get where she comes from...... Literally, regionally, spiritually, globally, musically..... She's just..... Bjork 🎶🥰🎶👍
Interesting. When that album came out, to me, it sounded like the absolute most avant garde, cutting edge of electronic music; that's was the overwhelming feeling about it I had at the time; like we had stepped into the next level. It has never really occurred to me that strings were such a huge element. Also, and I say this in the warmest sense it can be taken- Bjork is from another planet lol. I have been told I'm on the autism spectrum myself; but it's rare to see someone who is obviously so, so, so far out there, be able to connect all these outlier dot's the way she does. To be able to coalesce her feelings, which seem to range from, like she said, sound of music, through to like, a punk rock outpouring. Man, she is really out of the box lol. I can never get used to it. It must be fascinating to see what she's gonna be wearing each day, what mood she will be in etc... Every time I see her in something, this different alien appears.
I feel the same way about her. And her first 4 albums are perfection (Debut, Post, Homogenic, Vespertine) but after that she lost me. I don't think it's because the music isn't good. I think she's just so far out there that it's above what I can comprehend if that makes sense.
I've never seen the view of Morocco from España - it's enchanting! And how lucky we are to have Bjork showing this incredible scenery to us. She's such a force of nature and and incredibly original-sounding singer.
It was on one of the canary islands , a friend of mine saw her on La Gomera ( which is a marvelous island ) R.I.P. Mark Bell , you made some real landmark albums
4:03 - "It is almost as if you have to invent your own roots" Precisely, that's the meaning of growing as artist: learn how to create different music each creative iteration.
There is absolutely nothing budget about an SM58 its a great microphone, practically industry standard in certain uses. I love the sound of an SM58 it has this smoothness and veracity that even much more expensive condenser mics don't. Anyway with these things its >95% the performance anyway.
@@sacredgeometry Absolutely, some singers sound great on it, especially if they have a naturally powerful tone. It's just pretty rare, most go for SM7B. Also handheld without shockmount you can end up with all kinds of noises. It's just a surprise for such a great sounding record. I've also read she recorded some vocals while running around on the beach in the middle of the night with headphones on!
@@paulbrown7872 Good music isn't necessarily immaculately produced music through the most technically perfect gear. Often that is the complete opposite of what is needed. I prefer the sound of an SM58 to an SM7B although that might just be the preamp I am using to drive my SM7B not being up to the task.
It's a beta 58 (Blue ring).. similar but Better in a few respects compared a regular 58. More like a condenser sound. Many records have used both as get good rejection of nearby instruments, can often have live monitoring too (no headphones) which can aid performance .
I think what is remarkable for me is how rapidly electronic music has grown since this piece. It's amazing, really. I love Bjork's music - and I love her use of electronic music. It's just crazy how much more available it has all become. Available and powerful. But the core is what is done with it - musicality.
13:20 I mean how can you not cry it’s so beautiful. she is a musician much older then me and I feel in this section there is something she understands about life that I have yet to even recognize. I have had chills this whole time but this pushes it to a new level truly one of the best musicians to ever live ❤️
I keep on coming back to 13:02 to watch her performance of Yoga. There’s a giving here, a giving of oneself to the process of creating art, that is full of control and abandon at the same time. Bjork always reconfigures my state of being. I listen to her and become hopeful. Love
That In-studio rehearsal of Jóga is just stunning to watch. And it seems she cut out a lot of the lyrics she had here in the final album version. Shame. They would’ve given more variation to what is already an absolutely divine song. So happy to have found the documentary from which this was taken. She is a true musician. She cannot help herself but to express it outwardly.
I've been in that area, the area near Málaga, down from the Ronda hills in Southern Spain. It is arid, hot but as you into those hills, things cool down a bit, then you see it, The Rock of Gibraltar and a bit further, Africa. It is a magnificent sight.
Wow! Thank you so so much for uploading this. This is the time machine I needed this morning. Beautiful and ethereal Bjork and Spain and the 90’s. Ah yes. I was in my 20’s. A much more joyous time in life.
Love the way she carries a QY20 around. Reminds me of my Yamaha SU-10 I carried that everywhere, recording old ladies on the bus and making a tune out of the samples etc.
I brought a QY70 3 years ago, after I eventually learnt to use it, very cool. I had no idea the QY20 was around so long ago. I come from the guitar way of doing things, so missed out on all this gear.
I find this very inspiring. I know a lot of people in the comments are saying Bjork is a genius. and maybe she is, although I have issues with the term. Homogenic is easily my favourite album and I appreciate her honesty and even humility when she says she only writes one song a month. in a time when we are expected to be constantly productive, it is good to see one of the best songwriters just take her time, play about and also not do it all by herself.

15:45-16:56 was incredible and gave me chills. She has such an ethereal voice and magnetic personality. One of the most creative artists working in music.
This is the smallest part of what's happening in the video, but I really enjoy how her accents swirled around back in the '90s; London, Iceland, basic American.... all over the map, in a very expressive way.
I agree. It shows the influence in how she learned English. She isn’t a native speaker and picks it up where she goes.
bjork is my favorite artist ever, i always came back to her since i was a teenager

I FEEL YOU SIS
I agree. It is almost 20 years for me and she is my all time favorite artist.
I love her, the music is just a bonus. It was love at first sight, back when I saw her on MV doing Hit with The Sugarcubes. Must be almost 40 years now.
whenever life is dull, watching bjork is a reminder of how rich and full life can be.
watching Joga was just truly incredible. I struggle to find a song that moves me like that.
Brought me to tears :’)
One of the only other songs that has resonated with me like that one is Let Go by Frou Frou (Imogen Heap)
What is your main stay? I’m always curious what people listen to and best way sometimes is through commenting on yt!

She stays in tune? Ha ha ha. With what? Not the music.
@@wolveswithoutteeth OK KING
you're hearing the vocals after processing. There's already pitch correction and echo and all that added to what you hear in this video. Pitch correction has been on almost all music since the 80s even if you cant evidently hear it, nobody is perfectly on pitch
@@madiserket2 …it has nothing to do with autotune. She intentionally sings weird lyrics that don’t match the music. At all.
@@wolveswithoutteeth Imagine wasting time trying to shit on Bjork. Get a hobby, zilch.
I came for Bjork´s studio, and ended up with the making of Homogenic... !!!!!!
not a bad detour huh hehe
I had heard of Bjork a lot, but never heard her music until now. She's definitely special.
The "special" ? :)
She knows her way around all aspects of production and for that she deserves praise.
what a strange comment. not mad at it.
What you see is what you get with Bjork, which is why I love her. So intelligent and so talented and a real artist who isn't fake or manipulates the media or lies about her past. Sending Iceland lots of love from Scotland ❤️🏴🇮🇸
“Jóga” was not the first Björk song I ever heard, but it is the one that made me fall in love with her (25 years ago!)
She is one of a Kind theirs nothing you can compare her too. A true artist with the most diverse fans from all walks and music genres.
That hook 'I thought I could organize freedom, how Scandinavian of me' into the chorus where she sings those counter melodies is 15 seconds of sheer brilliance
the fact that this incredible album was recorded in such interesting circumstances makes it even better
I cant count the times Bjork has saved my life and I think she just did again, for this I am eternally grateful for the beauty of life, no matter how hard at times x
why saved your life ?
@@ismiismael honestly the power I feel in bjorks music helps me transcend anything in this world and reminds me of my path in music and inspires me to focus on what is important. If I didn't have this gift in my life, life would be much darker indeed.
Definitely want to go back and check out her entire music catalog. Such a beautiful voice and admire her artistry
each album is a work of art.
When my niece was 10 or 11 she would always be singing some song or another from the latest kids movie, you know, like little mermaid etc.. I gave her this album for Christmas that year, she loved it, she started singing Bjorks songs, my brother and his wife were sooo thankful.
That's why it was a great album and decade for her. Cheers
Same here!!!!
when i used to drive lyft, i would play her music. nearly everyone would say, i love bjork. her music had a calming, uplifting effect on passengers.
So, they needed to be calmed down, then?

seriously! So dynamic and moving. I get chills every time I hear that part, or that might just be because I have a fan blowing on me right now
This videos brings us so close to the raw sounds of her voice and intimacy when she is at a familiar place, a home, singing, gesturing , smiling, talking, feels like we are there, having the privilege to be close to an amazing talent
I listened a LOT to Björk in the 90s and just recently got back to rediscovering her music. (What an amazing soul she is!) Back when I first listened to Homogenic, I thought to myself "Wow, that really has an Icelandic feel to it. - I wonder if she's trying to reclaim her roots?"
A couple of days ago, watching a couple of documentaries on her career, it turned out that was exactly what she was doing. Funny to have that question answered like 25 years later. :)
It’s interesting you picked up on it without influence as well. It shows that you picked up what she was putting down
Every time I see her in something, this different alien appears.
so accurate, friend
Nanu, nanu.
I feel the same way about her. And her first 4 albums are perfection (Debut, Post, Homogenic, Vespertine) but after that she lost me. I don't think it's because the music isn't good. I think she's just so far out there that it's above what I can comprehend if that makes sense.
Imagine dating her lol what a roller coaster ride I’m sure that’d be. I’d be down affff
Wow, you described her perfectly.
So obsessed with her hair here. It’s so beautiful
Love your pfp
Joga is one of my favourite songs ever. Such a treat to see the moment of its birth. She's so captivating - a true one-of-a-kind.
I've never seen the view of Morocco from España - it's enchanting! And how lucky we are to have Bjork showing this incredible scenery to us. She's such a force of nature and and incredibly original-sounding singer.
Art gets created by artists .Seldom are artists born to create .Bjork is one.Her entire being is wonderfully different. It’s a joy.Unique.
She and her voice and the way she execute her songs.. Its just so interesting and full of surprises.
Hunter is easily my fav song of hers. An absolutely gifted and creative woman. Wonderful record from start to finish.

Homogenic was breathtaking. One of my all time favorite albums.
4:03 - "It is almost as if you have to invent your own roots"
Precisely, that's the meaning of growing as artist: learn how to create different music each creative iteration.
I think she meant Icelandic having no ancient roots because living under danish oppression in the past...
@@eastwestblason7213 oh, I didn't know that.
I have to study more Iceland's history.
Wow, she recorded her vocals on a handheld SM58 (budget live microphone). They sound incredible.
There is absolutely nothing budget about an SM58 its a great microphone, practically industry standard in certain uses. I love the sound of an SM58 it has this smoothness and veracity that even much more expensive condenser mics don't. Anyway with these things its >95% the performance anyway.
to be fair she could be singing into a telephone and still sound great
@@sacredgeometry Absolutely, some singers sound great on it, especially if they have a naturally powerful tone.
Many records have used both as get good rejection of nearby instruments, can often have live monitoring too (no headphones) which can aid performance .
simply beautiful..Thank you for sharing such artist intimacies & insights.
I think what is remarkable for me is how rapidly electronic music has grown since this piece. It's amazing, really. I love Bjork's music - and I love her use of electronic music. It's just crazy how much more available it has all become. Available and powerful. But the core is what is done with it - musicality.
What an incredibly talented writer/singer and just all around musician. Her music moves me in ways very few artists do. Cant quite describe it.
This brought me to tears while watching. A true artist in every sense of the word.
Homogenic is the most fantastic emotive album I ever heard. For so many years your album, was my mother.
The creative process and what goes behind the creation of a song is so fascinating!!❤️
13:20 I mean how can you not cry it’s so beautiful. she is a musician much older then me and I feel in this section there is something she understands about life that I have yet to even recognize. I have had chills this whole time but this pushes it to a new level truly one of the best musicians to ever live ❤️
I'm obsessed with Vespertine lately but now feel the need to revisit Homogenic
Seeing one of the best masterpiece's of the humankind (Joga) being recorded is priceless. Thanks for uploading mate.
I've been in that area, the area near Málaga, down from the Ronda hills in Southern Spain. It is arid, hot but as you into those hills, things cool down a bit, then you see it, The Rock of Gibraltar and a bit further, Africa.
It is a magnificent sight.
She is wonderful. Music that paints a landscape of Art that reflects life.
Wow! Thank you so so much for uploading this. This is the time machine I needed this morning. Beautiful and ethereal Bjork and Spain and the 90’s. Ah yes. I was in my 20’s. A much more joyous time in life.
I´m from Spain. I saw you at Sonar ... that was ... really full packed of people ! i still remember
I never get tired of Homogenic or Bjork. Priceless.
I remember this ...Homogenic was such a solid album of pure sonic exploration...and the cd artwork was incredible also
She so connected to life her own passion and it’s so amazing to see real raw original music but when she sings you can feel it in your Soul 😳😊
RIP Mark Ball, a true electronic music legend.
Very sad, man. I didn't know he has been gone for so long now. Time, truly is short for us.
Imo He was her best producer/collaborator. Arca doesn't hold a candle to him. R.I.P Mark Bell... =(
BELL not ball smh
Studio and personanl working is fantastic.Yellow Muumi t-shirt to belong for Björk definitely....
Such a delight to watch. Thanks so much for sharing this.
I don’t know why, but I just adore bjork in moomin t-shirt.

HOLY FK! U ARE A GOD FOR POSTING THIS!!! this was and still IS hands down my favorite Bjork album of all time. I was in Chicago on business when she did Bachelorette on Letterman (I think?) and I was plastered and lonely in my skyrise hotel... all the record stores were closed cuz it was midnight-ish... BUT I COULDN'T WAIT. I stayed up all night drinking and then walked 2 miles to Virgin records and bought the CD at the asscrack of dawn. I then proceeded to overdose on it for the next 6 months. fking amazeballs. And now to watch her recording the vox and producing the tracks live (AND SINGING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LYRICS TO JOGA???) is absolute goddamn ecstasy for me. THANK YOU BJORKSMUSIC, you made my summer. ❤

Seeing her work makes me emotional, raw talent and desire, always leaves me in awe
Her voice is powerful, yet fragile. What an angel she is.
I don't have enough vocabulary in English to praise how amazing Björk is.
She is Sublime and very authentic.
Of course, I don't forget that the people who work and have worked with her are also incredible.
