Eg, “"Blue Zones": Are People Living Longer or Just Committing More Fraud?” Rebecca Watson (Skepchick) (2024-09-30) ua-cam.com/video/7_8glRQ4NBA/v-deo.html
Although I am horrified as a European at US healthcare, as a 64yo WFPB cyclist since my 20s, I am somewhat bemused by the healthcare argument as well as population models in general. (the UK QRISK heart health calculator adds 1% for my "deprived" postcode but is not directly interested in diet and exercise) I aim to live in my own "Blue Zone" bubble...

@@aboutsuppliesStill doesn't describe causation. The other foods eaten with the rice matter a lot too. Each food mixed in totally changes the metabolic response in multiple ways. Rice is very close to sugar, metabolically, so it makes sense that it could be an issue. But it you eat it with a bunch of fiber rich veggies and healthy fats then that meal can still be super healthy. If you just pound white rice by itself, then sure, bad idea.
@@HoboGardenerBenindeed, excess white and sticky rice consumption may well indicate a sweet tooth tendency and less health awareness so it isn't a reach.
I don't get why people need so much validation to do wrong with their health. So much so, that when something comes out not going after them but showing how eating healthy and/or being vegan has great benefits they can't wait to try and "debunk" it. I mean, it's so pathetic. Especially in current times when concrete, unbiased data is so readily available.
I heard about this blue zone debunk, and listened to Rebecca Watson get fooled by it. Even people who are capable of skeptical thought don't always practice skeptical thinking. What I noticed from the claim, was that they put all of their eggs in the basket of longevity. They didn't seem to address the lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, etc., among the people who live in blue zones - and who continue to eat the "blue zone diet." Here I mean centering their diets on plants, with the majority of calories coming from starchy plants, and even from single crops. At best, this blue zone debunking claim should make us somewhat skeptical about one issue - longevity. Whether or not you accept the longevity claims (which I mostly do accept), there is little doubt that those who maintain the plant-based diets of simple high fiber foods, and very little meat, have lower occurrence of the illnesses mentioned above, as well as all cause mortality. The inclusion of data from non-blue zone locations suggests a thumb on the scale to boost the numbers they are trying to show. It seems dishonest. Also, I didn't understand why they thought that poor people should face shorter lives than wealthy people. It is this exact change in diet as these people move from blue zone diets to western diets associated with greater wealth, that has caused the increases in illness and early mortality. In any case, blue zones are real, and starch-based diets that eschew animal products will increase general health, which will surely result in longer lifes.
There is no such thing as Blue Zones as it is a made up word by Dan Buettner, a man with no MD or Ph.D, and not a scientist with no credentials in any healthcare or medical field. Wikipedia says he is a storyteller. Santa Claus was also a storyteller. As a slick and clever businessman Buettner sold his Blue Zones LLC business to the Adventist religion money making business for 78 million dollars. The Blue Zones book is not accredited by anything as far as reliable information goes as it is an entertainment book. There are over 500,000 centenarians in the world right now that have not yet died from cancer or heart disease and less than one percent are in those so called Blue Zones so it is completely irrelevant to anything since it leaves out what the other 99% of long lived healthy centenarians do and zero of them consume the diet promoted in the Blue Zones book.
Obviously, I agree that people should be vegan and should also exercise, but I'm just going to say that I can't really blame people for not talking to their neighbors. Neighbors are somewhat of a high risk group to interact with because, if they don't like you, they know where you live. And you can't just move in today's economy. There's a housing shortage from sea to shining sea, lol. Just trying to be fair.
I live in Hokkaido where there were 19 missing out of 2019 total centenarians in 2010 but Miyazaki prefecture was worse with 28 missing out of 576 total centenarians. I think the city hall officials in Miyazaki Prefecture need to pick up their game!
Thanks. Lots of points tackled in the concise video. Of course it's good, important to show up things which ultimately could cause significant public harm by being yet another force in turning people away from a health promoting lifestyle.
The legumes point is very interesting, as both raw vegans, paleos, ketos, carnivores agree that human beings are not designed to eat legumes. And yet ...
Lentil pasta is lentils and has much more protein. Adds variety to starches and includes a unique spectrum of nutrients... TJ's tempeh is an unbeatable source of carbs beans and proteins. Fermented.
Very interesting point. Reminds me of a rule I came up with "inadequate problems require inadequate solutions". Maybe striving to live longer is such a problem from a nature's perspective. On the other hand, really makes one wonder if the same can be applied to such controversial products as dairy, eggs and flesh.
Is this partly a response to Sabine's recent video? Because I just watched another video on dark matter where she also tacitly got called out... I dunno what's gotten into her lately.
6:30 I’d also like to add that the western diet is not the only reason why Okinawans now eat less vegetables and sweet potatoes. Okinawa has an extremely cycling/pedestrian-unfriendly layout, and there’s few trains compared to other places in japan. That compound the problem. People hardly do any excercise and are becoming sedentary, so drive-thrus and fast food restaurants are the more convenient way to get food.
The guy is British. Next “research” will be fish and chips and sausages rolls (and all other crappy food in UK) are great for you Crappy food is almost a religion in UK 😂😂😂
I was a bit turned off that the authors registered "blue zone" is a registered trademark, obviously for business purposes. Also, they include “A healthy social network”, and then also include “Being religious or spiritual”. Wouldn’t that fit under “healthy social network” already. Shows a religious affiliated business is making the assertions.
It was another youtuber that I heard this off of. She is generally rational by my estimations but she does seem to have a bit of a 'biased spot' against veganism. I remember where she quoted Earthling Ed saying that we would have no diseases in a vegan world in an older video, which was totally miles off the mark of what he said. Thanks for clearing this up. Seems like this recent paper generally has a bias against the blue zone guys' business practices, not confident it is somethinf specifically about veganism in this case.
Now, the question in my mind is what do these centenarians typically die of? I thought I had read or seen somewhere that many of them die peacefully in their sleep, cognitive and mobile up til death. ❤
Is there any proof that "big meat" operates like big oil in terms of spreading misinformation and doubt? Would love to read a good article about this. Most of my friends that are influenced by these types of consparicies to go green will appreciate a good following of the money.
There are far better proofs of eating a predominantly plant-based diet, being extremely healthy, far better than the blue zones concept. It’s an interesting book for sure though. There are prospective observational studies which have been well adjusted for confounding factors concerning diet, health and longevity. It’s important to let people know of the certainty of evidence of various sources, so they start to understand how to evaluate studies on their own.
I think the whole blue zone thing is interesting, but the important evidence is from the intervention studies. The blue zone studies and ancestral diet knowledge just fit with the strong evidence that we have. And by trying to use these weaker evidence sources we end up weakening the arguments by distracting from the strong evidence.
I agree a lot, but even some observational studies also show far better evidence then blue zones concept. Not all observational studies are equal far from it. Some are have adjusted for appropriately for non-confounding factors. There are some very useful intervention studies on diet.
@@RiDankulousfrankly I haven't made up my mind on this, but the China study certainly seems to be very good evidence, though they did also do some interventional studies to back up what the observational studies were saying. I have a lot of respect for T Colin Campbell

I don't know. I go to Japan twice a year and been to Okinawa quite a few times, and there are some old ass people there. It's not just their diet, though. It's their lifestyle. They're always in the middle of the malls doing their calisthenics and air golfing and stuff.
You should make a trip to all the Blue zones. By the way people eat now, much fewer will aged over 80 yrs old. Like i said before have a look at the food in Costa Rica with diesel gas in melon, red spray glyphosate for bananas, etc.. not sure many will live very long
Isaiah 5:19-21 19 to those who say, “Let God hurry; let him hasten his work so we may see it. The plan of the Holy One of Israel- let it approach, let it come into view, so we may know it.” 20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. 21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.
And what is the context of the above? Talking to a peoples partially ruled by a religious elite that were obsessed over rituals and ritual purity; things like washing your hands before meals, not eating pork and non fish sea food, having priests bless the food, etc. Meanwhile, many of these people were not treating their fellow humans all that well. So they didn't seem to understand that how you treat people and your intentions were more important than these material considerations as far as _spiritual/consciousness_ purity and growth were concerned. And considering so many people of the time didn't even treat their fellow humans that well, how would you expect them to listen to messages about being kind to animals! Yeah, not going to be a focus of a spiritual teacher 2000 years ago in those conditions, since you can barely get them to focus on treating each other well! With humans, you have to start with basics and then move your way up the ethics/consciousness truths. So just because a spiritual teacher from 2000 years ago didn't explicitly say, treat animals well, doesn't mean that it's not and never will be important. I mean, if you want to judge things from such a myopic viewpoint, well just a couple hundred years ago, you had religious, political, and other leaders who thought it was perfectly moral and acceptable to enslave black people. Don't most people think very differently now? Most people now think/feel that enslaving a fellow human is probably one of the worst evils one can engage in. Context, and an understanding of the peoples and conditions of the times, is everything. Learn to think more holistically, critically, and logically. And if you don't believe me, you can directly ask Yeshua yourself if he thinks things like factory farming are spiritually positive and healthy practices.
Oh, this is going to be an interesting watch as soon as I have some more time & energy to really get into it. I watched a podcast episode with a data scientist who claims that it's all a fraud and I found at least the pension fraud argument quite convincing. I remember watching a documentary about blue zones. There was this 100+ years lady in Nicoya that was asked what her secret for longevity was. Her response? "Eat a lot of cheese" 😂
We are so very very different individuals. Northern Alaska natives ate very few veggies for thousands of years and survived well. Other natives ate almost or completely just veggies and did well, but generally they got a lot of sunlight and exercise, not lazy couch potatoes that probably skew the results a lot. There are a lot of birth certificate cheats.
@@ΘάνατοςΧορτοφάγος "Finally, Dr Newman debunked the popular idea of ‘Blue Zones’ as regions of exceptional longevity and healthy lifestyles. Many, if not most of the centenarians in the ‘Blue Zone’ have turned out to be alive in the government records but were deceased in reality. Using extensive government data and surveys, Dr Newman showed that most of the dietary and lifestyle claims behind the so-called ‘Blue Zone’ regions of high longevity are not supported by any independent data. For example, despite vegetables and sweet potatoes being promoted as key components of the Okinawan ‘Blue Zone’ diets, according to the Japanese government, Okinawans eat the least vegetables and sweet potatoes in Japan and have the highest body mass index."

Eg, “"Blue Zones": Are People Living Longer or Just Committing More Fraud?” Rebecca Watson (Skepchick) (2024-09-30)
ua-cam.com/video/7_8glRQ4NBA/v-deo.html
Although I am horrified as a European at US healthcare, as a 64yo WFPB cyclist since my 20s, I am somewhat bemused by the healthcare argument as well as population models in general.
(the UK QRISK heart health calculator adds 1% for my "deprived" postcode but is not directly interested in diet and exercise)
I aim to live in my own "Blue Zone" bubble...
I knew you would drop this eventually. Thank you so much, your channel is indespensable
Methinks the nonvegans doth protest too much.
Heyyy you! Me thinks you is right!!!
The Connections (2021) [short documentary] ❤🎉❤
Has some of the here in the coments...
I’m guessing the author of said study is a big fan of cheeseburgers and milkshakes.
These days, when I hear people challenge things like blue zones, I am mediately think, doubt-merchant/shill.
A very well done video and very well researched - Strong work!
Wow, thanks for the hours of research you did for this deep dive.
Well yeah, it's inconceivable that poverty food (rice and beans) is actually healthy.
1. **Study Title:** Association between White Rice Consumption and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
**Publication:** BMJ
**Changes in Relative Risk:** Asians consuming the highest amounts of white rice had a 55% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those with the lowest intake. The relative risk for each additional serving per day was 1.11.
2. **Study Title:** White Rice Consumption and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: Meta-Analysis
**Publication:** Nature Review
**Changes in Relative Risk:** Relative risk of 1.55 for the highest versus lowest white rice consumption categories in Asian populations.
3. **Study Title:** Impact of White Rice Intake on Diabetes Risk in South Asians
**Publication:** FoodNavigator-Asia
**Changes in Relative Risk:** South Asians consuming ≥450g of white rice daily had a 61% increased risk of diabetes compared to those consuming less.
These studies underscore the significant link between high white rice consumption and increased diabetes risk in Asian populations.
Watch Planet Wild on how the Maasai people are healing the desert and growing plants. Some nonvegans liked to use the Maasai people as an excuse.
The sad thing is that most blue zones are fading away because people are abandoning the traditional diets and ways of the areas.
See you in Costa Rica...Pura Vida💚
Yayyyyy sloths!!
Thank you Mic!😊
Great Video!
The vegan diet is unhealthy. Over 70% of vegans get sick amd quit.
LOL, my Okinawan wife eats a lot of sweet potatoes these days, but what people eat in Okinawa these days is not particularly healthy.
I am my own blue zone. Green really..
I live in Hokkaido where there were 19 missing out of 2019 total centenarians in 2010 but Miyazaki prefecture was worse with 28 missing out of 576 total centenarians. I think the city hall officials in Miyazaki Prefecture need to pick up their game!
My brother flew into Sapporo to go snowboarding with some friends. He says it’s nice.
Thanks Mic.
Great video, Mic!
Thanks. Lots of points tackled in the concise video. Of course it's good, important to show up things which ultimately could cause significant public harm by being yet another force in turning people away from a health promoting lifestyle.
Remaining as a preprint for years indicates that it was rejected by the reviewers, probably by several journals.
Raw vegans don't eat anything cooked, but they are fine eating sprouted legumes like sprouted lentils, beans, and other plants.
love my sprouted seeds and legumes, love cooked beans. We adapt, to thrive; science can help us live long and healthy.
Is this partly a response to Sabine's recent video? Because I just watched another video on dark matter where she also tacitly got called out... I dunno what's gotten into her lately.
Thanks!
Thanks for the video! As a demography student, I appreciate the spotlight on our discipline.
If you doubt the blue zone then - better call Saul! 😅
Omg I wanted to make a better call Saul joke but figured it would go over 90% of people's heads so thank you!!

Cool video. ❤
There seems to be only one blue zone left.
"The white zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only, there is no stopping in the red zone."

Do you have a video on the argument that we have the stomach acid of a carnivore ?I m being bombarded with that argument lately 😮...
have a sweet potato! Also if you can find Okinawan/Hawaiian variety purple sweet potatoes go for it
Is there any proof that "big meat" operates like big oil in terms of spreading misinformation and doubt? Would love to read a good article about this. Most of my friends that are influenced by these types of consparicies to go green will appreciate a good following of the money.
There are far better proofs of eating a predominantly plant-based diet, being extremely healthy, far better than the blue zones concept.
It’s an interesting book for sure though.
There are prospective observational studies which have been well adjusted for confounding factors concerning diet, health and longevity.
It’s important to let people know of the certainty of evidence of various sources, so they start to understand how to evaluate studies on their own.
Anyone who's been to Japan lately can confirm that that country's general population is old AF.

Just saying hi to all of the vegans!
You should make a trip to all the Blue zones. By the way people eat now, much fewer will aged over 80 yrs old. Like i said before have a look at the food in Costa Rica with diesel gas in melon, red spray glyphosate for bananas, etc.. not sure many will live very long

20 Woe to those who call evil good

• Matthew 15:11 (NIV):
“What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”
What I missed in the conversation was some more information about Loma Linda, California though.

I remember watching a documentary about blue zones. There was this 100+ years lady in Nicoya that was asked what her secret for longevity was. Her response? "Eat a lot of cheese" 😂
@@Mario-forall shrill
@ibika9457 what do you mean?
💝💝💝💝💝💝
We are so very very different individuals. Northern Alaska natives ate very few veggies for thousands of years and survived well. Other natives ate almost or completely just veggies and did well, but generally they got a lot of sunlight and exercise, not lazy couch potatoes that probably skew the results a lot. There are a lot of birth certificate cheats.

I saw Rebecca Watsons video about Blue Zones months ago.
@@stefanpatrickco Me too. She's good. I haven't watched Mic's video in full yet to form an opinion relative to Rebecca's.
Rebecca Watson’s video was an initial response to the Ignobel prize. Mic’s video has response from actual peer reviewed researchers in the field.
Debunking with lies. That's the Mic the Liar.
What lies, show proof or you are the liar here
@@ΘάνατοςΧορτοφάγος "Finally, Dr Newman debunked the popular idea of ‘Blue Zones’ as regions of exceptional longevity and healthy lifestyles.
@@ΘάνατοςΧορτοφάγος My answer with the proof disappeared. Interesting.

No, you're not.
@nelsonhoffman5922 I'll go with my gut... And the doctors and others who agree that my RAST test does indeed show allergies to plants. Giving them up was such a relief.
@@subwayfacemelt4325 Liar, it's physically impossible to be allergic to all plants, you would already be dead.
How did you obtain it?
Is there no cure?
There are thousands of edible plants. Try eating plants in different ways, like fermented.
You can eat edible bacteria, like nutritional yeast. That is a complete protein.
