Not to davey and jade... they actually said those were their darkest times (perhaps the pun was intended) but made it loud and clear to the interviewer he was glad to move post that stage in his career. So it was a good thing for them to leave Nitro and change their sound.
Malicious Spirit sure glad they had the horror punk phase we wouldn't have BSITS or TAOD my 2 favorite but I love the earlier stuff and like newer stuff but in a completely different way
That was brilliance This afi is soooooo punk I love ittttttttttttttt xD Afi now is so different and yet I still love them but I wish I could've seen them play this live
@filmcriticconnor I gave Davey and his friend a ride in 1996 not long after VPOY came out and he sang along to every word of a Madonna song in the car. He never bought into the bullshit that so many morons do. He was never the generic "punk" you wish he was. Nor was anyone in the band. Sorry. They did speak against nu-metal and boy bands when those trends were happening, but they've always appreciated GOOD pop music which was abundant when they grew up in the 80's.
I'm agree with you. AFI was a band who used to write hardcore songs and now they're just doing art in the way they want to. Their songs are much mature, lyrics are more objetive and clear. Their new stuff is better in quallity. Instead, years brings security and steals energy in exchange. I like very much the new material, but I fell in love with the AFI showed in this video and that will always be the AFI golden times for me : )
Every band evolves, if they didn't.. People wouldn't keep listening to the same monotonous records they keep putting out each time. Like them or not, AFI is great. I'm excited to see what they put out in the future
@themayorofdac I'm sorry brother, but this vid gives me goosebumps, and I'm almost 30 now, but this still stirs fire in my soul, this was pure chemistry flowing between AFI and the crowd, ''through our bleeding we are one'', you can clearly see it here, and that is long gone now... Greetings from Italy.
Everyone needs to stop. If you don't like the music, don't expect some sort of party.. get over it. AFI in my eyes has and will always be fucking amazing.
When I watch videos of them ten years from this, I know they still got it...but Davey seems a little alienated and/or depressed or is just moving on. I mean, of course you would move on after that amount of time! So many of us wish for the old times...but it just seems that they were at their best in the 1999-2003 era, this venue suits it. Every band goes through it. AFI kicks ass always.
I'll be a fan for life but you're right. Nothing will ever match the live energy they had from 99-03 I recall Davey has surgery on his vocal chords and had to change the way his screams after STS. Which is why his screams after that were more screachy and raspy than his old brute way of screaming.
just adds more proof to the fact that there's been no good new music since 2000. '95-'99 were the best years, Snot, sugar ray, pantera, life of agony, tool..i could go on.
@themayorofdac you're unbelievably ignorant if you think Crash Love is a "mature" sound. It sounds like an album made to appeal to teenage "scene" girls. They didn't progress or grow, they changed sounds to sell more records and gain more acclaim. If someone walked up with the Crash Love album and handed it to Davey Havok in 1998, and told him it was his band, he would have laughed in their face. They epitomize every meaning of the term "Sell Outs"
Oh its sad...at least some ppl on this didn';t leave duchey comments! I do wish afi were punk again, their music is still awsome as hell just different...they aren't bad cuz they aren't punk, and it isn't their fault what kinda fans they have....well kinda but mostly ppl choose. IDK, I like them and I'm not emo for sure!
This is how I will always remember them. I refuse to go see them live now because the venues aren't this intimate anymore plus they don't have the same intensity. I agree with people that change is good, but I just didn't like the way they changed. At least I will always have the memory of going to those crazy shows back in the days.
and in all honesty, how awkward would it be for a bunch of almost forty year old guys to be playing violent crazy punk shows? Of course afi would mature. its natural.
Yeah but kiss fuckin stinks. Plus they have dudes behind the curtains playing instruments because gene and Paul suck so bad. Take away the goofy costumes and pyrotechnics and they’re just a mediocre lane ass band.
@spacecowboyrodeo I was talking about the sound of the music now not the way the band looks. Hey man dont get me wrong their a good bad, its just the last two albums are targeted more for the 11teen year olds. So dont get so bent out of shape.
slayer manages to do it after Jeff's death and Dave's quitting. While i understand the 'growing up' argument when green day no longer writes songs about pot and masturbation. I do not understand why AFI continues to write more pop oriented songs.
Where did you find that?? I'm always trying to convince people that he's straight, but no one believes me. Could you messag me a link please? And, to those who still don't believe that he's straight, he's got a girlfriend now.
@filmcriticconnor You're pretty damn fluent in ignorance yourself. All of your points are wrong. All of them. For Crash Love, Davey cut his hair short, wore almost no makeup, lost the lip ring, started wearing shiny gold suits, wrote lyrics criticizing current pop culture, and for the first time ever, didn't scream once on the whole album. In other words, CL is the antithesis of what's popular amongst the "scene" crowd. What are you talking about?
To themayorofdac...i recently listened to crash love for the first time & it made me cringe.People who like their new stuff dont have a clue about music cause their the mainstream & the mainstream like poppy rock with afew catchy jingles. In 10 years their music has been watered down and over produced that no energy or passion or fury or melodic epic breakdowns remain. They do deserve all the money in the world(they have it now) for their masterpieces from 2003 & Most Importantly before that.
Man i do hope you were 12 years old when you wrote that. Only a 12 year old would make a dumbass comment like that. If you were in your 20s that would be laughably sad.
@themayorofdac With age comes dilapidation, carelessness, objection, confusion, and financial insecurity. AFI changed their style of music when they joined Dreamworks to please the record executives and so they could reach a broader audience and fatten their wallets. Open your fucking eyes. Watch this video and note how much fun they have playing this music.
If you guys want to see a young new band with a sound similar to what AFI were like back in the 90's / early 2000's, then CHECK OUT OUR CHANNEL. The mix of Hardcore/Horror Punk AFI used to play is the main influence for us. Through our bleeding, we are one !
The ones you named are awful... End transmission? Kiss and Control?? How can you even put those songs on par with this song... it's Kill Caustic btw, and the screams in it are dreadful. The only decent ones you listed are DTS and Leaving song part 2.
Unfortunately, it's also awkward to hear a bunch of almost forty year old guys playing a bunch of pop-rock songs to an audience of prepubescent girls. Although, the b-side on Crash Love was pretty interesting.
Meh, fuck Love is a Many Splendored thing, they need to start playing more BSITS and SYMAOYE... third season, exsanguination, narrative of soul against soul, triple zero...
The DF is garbage and doesn't mean anything. I've been a member of that board since 2004 and still haven't joined... I've seen them many times and I even have Jade's fucking guitar pick. Correcting your spelling obviously makes me right because you spelt it wrong.... And I was at edgefest, right at front, that's where I got Jade's pick. Crash Love and DU are just plain awful compared to pre-AOD, STS was good, kept the dark, somber lyrics... DU just took a turn for the worst.
@themayorofdac Needless to say, lots of old people turn grumpy, sour, and smelly.... You must be "mature, aged, and smelly" Thx but na, New AFi is garbage
My favorite AFI song. Play it loud!!
Leigh Lamotta mine too😀
The passion in these older songs and performance is so incredible, so raw, and yet so fucking perfect!
these old shows are historical treasures
Best AFI years
Not to davey and jade... they actually said those were their darkest times (perhaps the pun was intended) but made it loud and clear to the interviewer he was glad to move post that stage in his career. So it was a good thing for them to leave Nitro and change their sound.
Malicious Spirit sure glad they had the horror punk phase we wouldn't have BSITS or TAOD my 2 favorite but I love the earlier stuff and like newer stuff but in a completely different way
as we all ARISE! ...............fucking love it
I agree. Some of my favorite shows were AFI back in the days. Glad I got to experience them when they were so energetic.
I resent the universe for not letting my be there.
This was the first song I learned on drums. Me and my buddy would play their albums back to front regularly. Good times.
I was at this show. Showcase theater! They killed it
I'm so jealous you have no idea
This performance is unbelievable
Wow...I'm so jealous of every person in that room! I still love AFI no matter what, but seeing them back then would have been so amazing!
This was from 99? That's when the album released. I've never seen such a reaction and the crowd know all the words for such a new song.
AFI fans were literally fanatical
That was brilliance
This afi is soooooo punk I love ittttttttttttttt xD
Afi now is so different and yet I still love them but I wish I could've seen them play this live
magical video right here
the best
Such an awesome performance!
One of my favourite AFI songs, and probably my favourite bridge section of any AFI song.
This is fucking real punk
@filmcriticconnor I gave Davey and his friend a ride in 1996 not long after VPOY came out and he sang along to every word of a Madonna song in the car. Ashes fall and I'm rising up again
ASHES FALL NIGGA
Great live video from the early days. This is fucking awesome!!
Such a fucking sick scene holy fuck
Currently punching my ceiling 11/2023
Every band evolves, if they didn't.. People wouldn't keep listening to the same monotonous records they keep putting out each time. Like them or not, AFI is great. I'm excited to see what they put out in the future
Yep
We all begin to burn, the autumn flame dances in my eyes***
The truth in this comment is a thing of pure and absolute beauty... Thank you for posting.

AFI puts on a great concert it seems... how I'd love to go to one.
Old or new, anything AFI is godly.
Freakin awesome.

just adds more proof to the fact that there's been no good new music since 2000.

Best Comment Ever.
Look at how alive the scene was. Never see a show like this again.
@themayorofdac

i can name at least 20 bands that do that and it is fucking awesome
If anything you'd think battle weary hardened people over 40 would be angrier and crazier than young spoiled teens.
This is how I will always remember them. I refuse to go see them live now because the venues aren't this intimate anymore plus they don't have the same intensity. What I would give to be there
@filmcriticconnor Back to the Future!!
I miss the old afi ;(
@themayorofdac WELL SAID!!!
start off with funky chicken for the underworld love the stiches qand clay sown up look from part two what you think?
and in all honesty, how awkward would it be for a bunch of almost forty year old guys to be playing violent crazy punk shows? Of course afi would mature. its natural.
Gotta say though, KISS are in their sixties and they're somehow still pulling it off.
Yeah but kiss fuckin stinks. Plus they have dudes behind the curtains playing instruments because gene and Paul suck so bad. Take away the goofy costumes and pyrotechnics and they’re just a mediocre lane ass band.
i just hope they put out like 1 more punk album before they call it quits, although i know davey cant sing like this anymore. :(
Fuck me. I miss THIS AFI. Their newer records are not as epic as they used to be. This was AFI's apex that's for sure.
@fresh098 People get drunk at straight edge shows too... .. .
explains his new voice...
omg, what the hell happend to them, its a shame that they had to change.
this was when they were good
@spacecowboyrodeo I was talking about the sound of the music now not the way the band looks. Hey man dont get me wrong their a good bad, its just the last two albums are targeted more for the 11teen year olds. So dont get so bent out of shape.
Only if you call Sick Of It All awkward...
adams fuckin beast,
slayer manages to do it after Jeff's death and Dave's quitting. While i understand the 'growing up' argument when green day no longer writes songs about pot and masturbation. I do not understand why AFI continues to write more pop oriented songs.
Yeah and quite honestly slayer grew stale after 1998 playing the same shit so what’s your point?
@cricketrox4ever i hate time... i could've been born in 1975 and could've grew up with davey but nooo.... : |
lol some fan tackled davey at 2:57. I'd be pissed if i were him
Where did you find that?? I'm always trying to convince people that he's straight, but no one believes me.
Could you messag me a link please?
And, to those who still don't believe that he's straight, he's got a girlfriend now.
name some songs that are on par or better than this after art of drowning
I got Goosebumps watching this. to bad I was only 10 then and listened to Blink 182 and Weezer, didnt get into AFI till 12
i know they went emo i miss punk rock afi they need to go back to punk rock
