Drinker's Extra Shots - Cabrini

  • Since the success of Sound of Freedom, I've been curious to see what Angel Studios would do next. And that turned out to be Cabrini, a real-life historical drama about a woman sent to 1890's New York to help the helpless.

@SubZero-hs9xc Transformers movies made billions and most of them are utter shit, whereas many great movies were box-office duds that later became timeless cult classics like Idiocracy and Fight Club, box office alone isn't a measure of a movie's worth, unless you are a smooth brained consoomer.

Thank you, Drinker, for reviewing Cabrini. Hollywood claims to promote strong female characters, but what they really do is get actresses to portray characters in a way as to make them appear as poor facsimiles of men, bereft of anything feminine. Cabrini actually shows feminine strength through the demonstration of maternal caring and maternal ferocity. Go figure that bravery and valor can actual be exemplified *DIFFERENTLY* between men and women.

My grandfather asked me to take him to see this movie. He remembers his grandmother speaking about meeting Cabrini and helping by donating to her orphanages. Cabrini went to the Italian immigrants to ask for donations and my great great grandmother owned a grocery store. It was a very good movie and my grandfather had a hard time watching it because that attitude toward Italians was still going strong when he was growing up.

Thanks for a very solid clear review. I saw Cabrini over a month ago and I enjoyed it. For Catholics she is of particular note because she was the first American (though naturalized not need a born) saint. As an Italian American raised in New York, I will also tell you that Mother Cabrini is still mentioned in many contexts in the Italian American community in New York City. She also gets one mention in the movie Uncle Buck!

I feel similarly about it. The story doesn't break the mold creatively, but you wouldn't want it to if they're aiming for a reasonable degree of historical accuracy. The visuals are gorgeous and the acting is up to the standard we as the audience expect of a quality film. All in all, it's a competently made and largely uplifting story of overcoming internal and external challenges for the sake of others.

What I love about this film is that the themes and plot points are ultimately the sort of progressive beats liberals would love - an empowered girlboss who is aided by independent women who don’t rely on men; she faces blatant racism and prejudice and fights the rich; she employs the help of sex workers, immigrants, and minorities; she goes up against white male politicians and church leaders; and there’s even a scene that is sort of implies gun control. They even released it on International Women’s Day and marketed it as a feminist movie.
But no Hollywood studio these days would ever touch it because (1) the protagonist is openly Christian (even though religion and faith actually have surprisingly little to do with the film) and (2) because Hollywood doesn’t *dare* put out anything that implies the very real reality that groups of white people have also been victims of racism. This is why I love that Angel Studios is giving films like this the opportunity to be seen. I only wish it replicated the financial success that Sound of Freedom did.

I saw it a month ago while I traveled across America. Id stop for a few days in a tiny town in NM. They had an old school theater from the 40's and it was the only movie that was playing that weekend. Like you not a subject that I would run to watch but since I saw ''The Shift'' and liked it I figure why not?
Like you I'm truly impress with what they do with their budget, they always have at least 2 well known character actor in a movie to bring up the performances and with the costumes and the setting you can easily loose yourself and think you are there.
Since then I also checked out Angel Studios documentary called ''After Death'' about some scientists that have studied people that have died and had out of body experiences and that not all of them have the sensation of going up.
Highly recommend if you're into that stuff.
All to say that now whenever a trailer starts and see ''Angel Studios Production'' it peeks my curiosity.

As both a lifelong student of history and a Catholic, I find stories like Cabrini and Therese (a St. Luke Productions film from a few years ago about the life of St. Therese of Lisieux) to be well-done family fare that can be uplifting and provide teachable moments to kids. Those looking for rock'em-sock'em non-stop action will likely be disappointed, but for solid drama that confronts the human condition, faith-based films are hard to beat.

I had just one complaint with this film: the final line is "Men could never do what we do." For a movie entirely about people of faith (women _and_ men) working together to help the helpless, that final line seemed like the creators were changing the movie's message from "Do good" to "Take _that,_ men!" as a parting shot. It felt unnecessarily tacked on to what was otherwise a good film.

Thanks for the review, Drinker! I'd not heard of this movie, and I'm definitely interested in seeing it.
You may not know it, or care, but Mother Cabrini was the first American, either naturalized or native-born, to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church. Also, she ended her days in Chicago, where she founded Columbus Hospital, on the lakefront. A wildly romanticized statue of her is in the lobby of the hospital.

My wife and I saw the movie today. It's terrific! A most impressive story, very well told.
I'm a 71-year-old guy, but I confess to tearing up when the children started singing "Va, pensiero" outside the opera singer's home. On the off chance that you're not into opera, "Va, pensiero" ("Go, thought") is a chorus from Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Nabucco". In the opera, it's sung by a chorus of Hebrew slaves who are singing of their love of their long-lost homeland. It became the anthem of the Risorgimento that unified Italy in the 19th century, and is the unofficial anthem of Italy today. It was so appropriate that the children should sing that chorus - and Andrea Bocelli's 12-year-old daughter Victoria sang it so beautifully!
Thank you again, Drinker, for letting us know about "Cabrini"!

Went to see this with my daughter (she’s a big advocate for indie films) and was not expecting this! Had never heard of this lady before (altho there is a college named for her in nearby PA!) now I know why, how she is not better known with all the Women’s Month stuff every year I don’t know, nothing but sheer tenacity and will moved her to establish hospitals and orphanages around the world - all staffed and run only by women, so not quite the dreaded girl bosses but def a hugely powerful message of what can be achieved in spite of the odds. Glad you reviewed this one.

I’m in this movie. It was shot in my city and I was an extra (wealthy American woman role). I bet at least half the budget was for extras, as we worked 12 hour days and mostly stood around doing nothing while on the clock. The outdoor carnival scene with the opera singer was an all night shoot (like 4 pm to 6 am) and they didn’t even tell us beforehand, which sucked, but I got paid like $760 for that one night. Multiply that by like 500 and that’s what they spent on extras on that one night alone.

It’s a pretty smart film that actually ends up being an inversion of the “mobster movie” genre. The production value is pretty impressive and there are some very impressive creative choices that are quite impactful, like when Mother Cabrini stares down the camera lens in the direction of the nuns following her when telling them that they need to see and take in the people around them and their suffering. I was pretty damn impressed with the whole production.
