Nightcrawler is an excellent 2014 thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo, about a freelance journalist out to make a name for himself, at any cost.
His character seemed to be on the autism spectrum so if that movie came out today it probably would have gotten panned by the attention seeking, online, professional victims, for villainizing mental illness. Anyway, Jakes performance was amazing and it was definitely one of the best films of the year.
I was genuinely impressed by how skin crawling creepy this character comes off. Gave me a respect for Jake Gyllenhaal that was not there prior to watching this movie.

You get a hint on how well Gyllenhaal can play a manic character as an investigative journalist in the great film, _Zodiac._ In _Nightcrawler,_ seven years later, the morbid curiosity he makes you part of is a great ride.

Unlike a big action movie I wasn't numb to action by the end of the movie and I could absolutely picture myself being in the car with him and being as scared as his employee was about what was happening. It also looked and felt like it was a video of a real car chase.
One movie recently, Dune, made me feel, just like Critical Drinker said, that this is a very good movie, not excellent maybe but good, and it's so rare to have that feeling anymore.
I love that Louis is basically a mirror opposite of Loki, the detective Gyllenhaal played in Prisoners the year before. Loki is a true good guy, that does the thing that he thinks is best for others while still upholding that law. And add to that his tic disorder that makes him blink uncontrollably where Louis on the other hand, doesn’t blink during the whole movie.
Law Abiding Citizen wasn't really a villain but treated as one and they chickened out giving a satisfactory ending because they didn't want "the bad guy" to win. Night crawler is/was a breath of fresh air.
@@waitingondeletion Well, i have to contradict you there. Clyde wins, because he makes Nick "do the right thing". Will the world remember his manifesto ? Probably not, but he made his point and got the satisfaction he wanted in the end and Nick became "a better man" as a result. I know a lot of people wanted a second movie and Clyde to become Punisher 2.0, but i'm good with the one we got and imo it wraps up rather nicely. If anything i think the premise that he was so good at planning ahead wore a bit thin by the end of the movie; Then again, maybe that is what people wanted to see more of ? A morally grey character putting elaborate plans into motion. I see the appeal of that.
It really is super creepy. They nailed the realism of the story, you can totally see all this being an actual story and that guy just roaming around LA looking for the next opportunity to make money off of horrible events
Watch Jake Gyllenhaal's eyes when he plays all these different intense characters. They're all unique. The guy has a level of control over his expression that I don't think I've ever seen before.
Just watched The Covenant a couple days ago, and it finally dawned on me how many Jake Gyllenhaal movies I liked. It's like I wasn't really ready to admit that to myself until that moment. A truly underrated actor.
I have been present several times to see how journos work. At a free-time activity I was in, a woman from the radio tried to pressure me and others one by one to say something gory that she could use. When I was a kid in school a woman from the newspaper used a quote that made a kid look silly at a school event. A journo swooped down on a teenage couple sitting on a park bench and asked them questions, then quoted the girl as "giggling" and "swooning" in his story about teen summer love. A journo at the train station gave extremely biased info about restaurant owners before asking people if they agreed with a proposed leftist measure to clamp down on them, gathering this as statistics. A journo wrote a story about "innocent tenant harassed by ruthless landlord" EVEN AFTER he had heard the truth about this horrible tenant. He agreed to leave out the landlord's name as his concession to the truth. And across Europe, whenever left-wing extremists have attacked people protesting mass immigration, the media write about "violence at racist rally".
I totally agree with Drinkers thoughts on Jake's portrayal of Louis Bloom. I didn't take much notice of him in his previous roles but after seeing "Nightcrawler" I was extremely impressed and thereafter I began to pay attention to Jake Gyllenhaal to see what what other movies who would act in. A great acting performance. Would like to see Drinker do an 'Extra Shots' video on the movie "Heat" with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Jon Voight, Val Kilmer and Ashley Judd and a cast of many.
The shootout at the bank all filmed in one unbroken take is one of the most epic pieces of filming in cinematic history. No crazy stunts, no cgi, just pure heart stopping action!

If you haven't seen Prisoners that is deserving of an extra shots for sure. Gyllenhaal and Jackman give amazing performances and the story is engaging to the end.
This movie cemented Gyllenhaal as a "must watch" actor for me. I've met people like Lou Bloom and he is absolutely chilling. Riz Ahmed also turns in a great performance. That Dodge Challenger is right up there with memorable movie cars.
Glad you finally reviewed this underrated movie. Jake's performance really creeped me out (in the best way possible) and I always thought his character reminded me of a coyote, looks scrawny yet has this dangerous aura around him. Apparently Jake lost weight to give him that gaunt coyote look, especially the way his eyes stand out even more because of it. It's a terrific performance from him.

I still remember getting a chill from the subtle threat Gyllenhaal issues to his partner for allowing a little gasoline to spill on the outside of his car where it could mar the paint. The line is delivered in a calm, matter-of-fact way but the naked steel underneath it really shook me.
another spine chilling scene is him listing his demands after getting a crazy scoop to Rene Russo's character which pretty much says "you'll do what you are fucking told to do next time we have sex"
I honestly think Jake Gyllenhaal is an incredibly talented actor, not just because of his performance in night crawler being top notch. But also performances in the covenant, brothers, and southpaw were also incredible to me.
I just watched a video about Jake the other day and how he's such a wonderful, yet highly unsung actor. This movie was among one of his best and showed me just how incredible Jake's acting truly js.

While I love this movie on its own, I think it really shines as a companion piece to American Psycho, since it's really interesting to compare/contrast how the movies approach similar set-ups, protagonists, and cultural critiques through completely different tones. Contrast to Bateman, who gets completely ignored even when he outright tells people he's evil, nobody in Nightcrawler is really fooled by Lou's facade, they just misinterpret the danger signs as him being socially awkward or desperate. I also like how the plot is basically a dark version of the stereotypical "American success story", where a guy who's down on his luck is able to pull himself up with a little bit of ingenuity and relying on the right people to eventually have his own successful business. Of course, his ingenuity usually manifests as him doing something illegal or sociopathically detached, and his connections are usually cemented with manipulation or blackmail.
I'm surprised that this movie hasn't appeared on any of your channels as a suggestion before, Nightcrawler is great and I totally loved it when it first came out.
I love movies like this. What a lot of people fail to realize is that in the real world, sometimes there is no black and white. We're all just in the gray zone, doing good and bad things for bad and good reasons. It's a brutal and honest look at the world, and it's beautiful. Great video drinker. 🎉
This might be my favorite performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. He's so unnerving and despicable in this film it really scared me. It's nuts to me that he didn't get an Oscar nomination for this role.
Agree. Like Aaron Eckhart in TDK. He was great as Dent, but overshadowed by an even better performance by Ledger so he's overlooked. Everyone in this really did a good job, even Paxton who wasn't in it for long. But Jake kind of riveted you any time he was on screen.
I watched ZODIAC again the other day and Jake Gyllenhaal may be my favourite actor working right now. He is constantly appearing in movies that just blow me away, like PRISONERS or the best movie of the past decade, NOCTURNAL ANIMALS.
If you want another banger performance from Jake Gyllenhaal: Enemy. It’s the only movie I’ve ever watched where I was tense and uncomfortable from start to finish. Zero downtime or relief. Very good film!
Everyone bringing up Prisoners is on point. Prisoners was one of the most impactful movies I've ever watched especially as a father of little girl it truly moved me
This film is a very good look into how ruthless and uncaring Hollywood and the media truly are when money is on the line. We all know it happens, but the media repeatedly denies it, because telling the truth is not something they are capable of doing.
Honestly one of the best portrayals of a psychopath I’ve seen on film. I know this association did a survey on the best psychopaths in films and they ranked Anton Chigurh as first, but honestly Lou seems like the most realistic in a sense that you can meet someone like him in your every day life. He’s charismatic, fearless, and driven by narcissistic greed which are all staples of a typical psychopath, but what really sold it was Gyllenhaal completely disappearing into the character.
Fantastic movie. The fact that Gyllenhaal didn't get an Oscar for perfectly portraying a disturbingly realistic high-functioning psychopath is a fucking felony.
Definitely one of the best movies of the last 10 years! Its ability to show the cold and callous side of the mainstream news syndicates and their agenda of keeping people in fear is so well executed and also showing how sociopaths can rise in any profession at the expense and disregard for others, which is sadly prevalent in most corporations today. Gyllenhaal is truly outstandingly creepy in this.
Lou is a complete evil psycho but I must admit his work motto goes hard and the edits about it even more. Edit: specifically the part where’s he pretending to be an anchor.
I think this is his best performance yet, I've watched this one a few times, and yip, just can't take my eyes off of him the entire time. 10/10 a really great movie.
This is one of the few films my Mrs reluctantly dragged me along to the cinerma for that I ended up pre-ordering before release and paying full price for the DVD.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a really great and more importantly interesting actor. I don't know how you could think he's average/fine. Enemy, Nocturnal Animals, Prisoners, Nightwalker are great roles. Lots of other really good ones. He's one of those rare actors that I think "I'll watch film x because he's in it and is always interesting and good".
May be a great movie, but no doubt, the most underrated movie of 2014 revolving around journalists is "Kill The Messenger." Despite an all star cast and amazing story, it's been completely buried. Guess they don't want people finding out too much about Gary Webb. Drinker, that would be an excellent "Extra Shots," especially if you've never seen it.
There was a LOT of good press toward this movie when it came out. Naturally, I saw it in theaters and boy was I ever glad I did. Nothing like watching all these "nighttime promenades" in a darkened theater to get the atmosphere right. Grab the popcorn and the drink while you're at it. Hahaha! One critic even noted Jake Gyllenhaal was as old in this as Robert DeNiro was when he played Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver. This movie is essentially perfect. Not a complaint.
An absolutely terrific film, one that stays with you a long time after viewing it. Compelling subject matter and incredible performances all round. Plus it has the added bonus of Bill Paxton being in it, which is always a good thing
Gyllenhaal should have got an Oscar for this movie. But they only give Oscars to movies that make all the fogies in the academy feel good. This movie, along with Drive are absolute gems and an unfortunate rarity.
I saw this many years ago and was immediately sucked in. Jake's performance from a broke looser to a successful "stringer" based on his sociopathy and win at any cost mentality makes for a great and crimally underrated movie.

Enemy is a very interesting film… takes a couple watches to really grasp everything that happens, or doesn’t happen.

I watched this for the first time recently. An absolute masterpiece that shows just how excellent an actor Jake actually is.

This is easily in my top 20 of best movies of all time. The dark humor is so unique and the acting is brilliant.

That scene always left me wondering what it was she wouldn’t do, especially given the nature of Bloom’s character.

I just watched a video about Jake the other day and how he's such a wonderful, yet highly unsung actor. This movie was among one of his best and showed me just how incredible Jake's acting truly js.

Ive come to notice that if a movie has Jake G in it, than it's going to be good.
While I love this movie on its own, I think it really shines as a companion piece to American Psycho, since it's really interesting to compare/contrast how the movies approach similar set-ups, protagonists, and cultural critiques through completely different tones. Contrast to Bateman, who gets completely ignored even when he outright tells people he's evil, nobody in Nightcrawler is really fooled by Lou's facade, they just misinterpret the danger signs as him being socially awkward or desperate.
I also like how the plot is basically a dark version of the stereotypical "American success story", where a guy who's down on his luck is able to pull himself up with a little bit of ingenuity and relying on the right people to eventually have his own successful business. Of course, his ingenuity usually manifests as him doing something illegal or sociopathically detached, and his connections are usually cemented with manipulation or blackmail.
The Miranda Sings apology reminded me of this movie. The way her eyes stared at the camera like a starving coyote.
I went to the cinemas to see this, knowing absolutely nothing about it.

I love movies like this. What a lot of people fail to realize is that in the real world, sometimes there is no black and white. We're all just in the gray zone, doing good and bad things for bad and good reasons. It's a brutal and honest look at the world, and it's beautiful. Great video drinker. 🎉
This might be my favorite performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. He's so unnerving and despicable in this film it really scared me. It's nuts to me that he didn't get an Oscar nomination for this role.

Agree. Like Aaron Eckhart in TDK. He was great as Dent, but overshadowed by an even better performance by Ledger so he's overlooked. Everyone in this really did a good job, even Paxton who wasn't in it for long. But Jake kind of riveted you any time he was on screen.

This film is a very good look into how ruthless and uncaring Hollywood and the media truly are when money is on the line. We all know it happens, but the media repeatedly denies it, because telling the truth is not something they are capable of doing.
Why Hollywood? It was about T.V. News. It literally had nothing to do with Hollywood.

Honestly one of the best portrayals of a psychopath I’ve seen on film. I know this association did a survey on the best psychopaths in films and they ranked Anton Chigurh as first, but honestly Lou seems like the most realistic in a sense that you can meet someone like him in your every day life. He’s charismatic, fearless, and driven by narcissistic greed which are all staples of a typical psychopath, but what really sold it was Gyllenhaal completely disappearing into the character.
Fantastic movie. The fact that Gyllenhaal didn't get an Oscar for perfectly portraying a disturbingly realistic high-functioning psychopath is a fucking felony.
Definitely one of the best movies of the last 10 years! Its ability to show the cold and callous side of the mainstream news syndicates and their agenda of keeping people in fear is so well executed and also showing how sociopaths can rise in any profession at the expense and disregard for others, which is sadly prevalent in most corporations today. Gyllenhaal is truly outstandingly creepy in this.

This is one of the few films my Mrs reluctantly dragged me along to the cinerma for that I ended up pre-ordering before release and paying full price for the DVD.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a really great and more importantly interesting actor. I don't know how you could think he's average/fine.
Enemy, Nocturnal Animals, Prisoners, Nightwalker are great roles.
Lots of other really good ones.
He's one of those rare actors that I think "I'll watch film x because he's in it and is always interesting and good".
When I first saw this movie when it came out it was an instant film of the year for me. Its held up well and when it's on TV its well worth watching.
May be a great movie, but no doubt, the most underrated movie of 2014 revolving around journalists is "Kill The Messenger." Despite an all star cast and amazing story, it's been completely buried. Guess they don't want people finding out too much about Gary Webb. Drinker, that would be an excellent "Extra Shots," especially if you've never seen it.

There was a LOT of good press toward this movie when it came out. Naturally, I saw it in theaters and boy was I ever glad I did. Nothing like watching all these "nighttime promenades" in a darkened theater to get the atmosphere right. Grab the popcorn and the drink while you're at it. Hahaha! One critic even noted Jake Gyllenhaal was as old in this as Robert DeNiro was when he played Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver. This movie is essentially perfect. Not a complaint.

An absolutely terrific film, one that stays with you a long time after viewing it. Compelling subject matter and incredible performances all round. Plus it has the added bonus of Bill Paxton being in it, which is always a good thing

I saw this many years ago and was immediately sucked in. Jake's performance from a broke looser to a successful "stringer" based on his sociopathy and win at any cost mentality makes for a great and crimally underrated movie.
