Seal Rescued From Fishing Line

- Some might think we spend most of our time running up and down the beach. The actual rescue of a Cape fur seal makes up a small percentage of our day on patrol. Most of our time is spent scanning for entangled seals; we're talking hours! This seal is lucky to get away without any scars as the entanglement was fresh, which is a luxury many seals don’t get.

Hi all!
When rescuers run up to the herd, you can see how many babies there are in this herd. But babies need a mother, and the mother should not die or suffer because some people did not take care that their garbage did not end up in the ocean. Thank you for saving this big mama!
Today is April 23, 2024. This amazing channel has 1.92 million subscribers (changed 3 days ago. Looking forward to another 80,000!) Subscribe if you haven't already. By subscribing, liking, commenting, donating and reposting, you help save seals.
I hope you won't see as many snoek lines on seals this year, but I know you probably will, since the fishermen continue to use the ocean as a dumping ground. Thanks, guys!🦭🌊♻️
Thank you for saving her even though she wasn't exactly appreciative 😊❤
😂😂😂
🙂👍
Thank you all so much. .my Angels of Sea ..you are amazing.. NYC one ❤ to you my Gs
Our efforts are just a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of tonnes of trash entering the world's oceans every year.
We are unfortunately not solving the problem, but only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. These videos aim to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea, and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.
Związana żyłka😡😡😡Dziękujemy,że wypatrzyliście tę piękną foczą mamę❤❤❤
Pozdrawiam i życzę zdrowia i miłości❤🇵🇱👋
It's sad, knowing that you can expect a lot more snoekline entanglements soon, now that a fleet of snoek boats have left port. Will their crew ever stop discarding pieces of line overboard? Thanks guys for saving this big momma seal!💕🦭
Fishermen are well aware of the consequences of their actions. As long as marine pollution regulations are not enforced and culprits face no punishment, negligence regarding fishing gear and related litter will persist. And so will marine wildlife entanglements.
MY PHONE STINKS! Watching OCN videos on my Samsung phone and I could not find the Donate button for the fundraiser. Maybe you experience the same? If you have access to a laptop, it's easy to find the Donate button - just sayin'. Anyway . . . we are just a couple of hundred short of that MAGIC 10K number. In 1970 I participated in the original Earth Day. It seems inconceivable that in the last 54 years people, politicians, and corporations are still denying the damage we do to our planet and all of the living things upon it. Your small contribution will help rectify that denial. Save one seal, save the planet. OCN subs are LEGENDS!!! OCN heroes are LEGENDS!!! Thank you for your generosity. Love and hugs x10,000 from me in New Mexico USA
Thank you for spotting and rescuing ‘big momma’ from her snoek line entanglement. Blessings to all❤
This is a skill we wish we never had to develop, but we are unfortunately very experienced by now.
It's difficult for those adult females to hide among all those small pups. Great spotting, Denzil!👀
He is an eagle eyed flash of a person!
I'm always amazed that you can find a target again after losing it in a large group of individuals. But you did, thank goodness, and were able to free her from the tight loop of line. Thank you!
Many lives saved in one go : Big Mama will now be able to have many more pups thanks to you ! 💖
Thank you Team OCN for saving this Momma Seal before she was badly wounded. More boats going out? Sounds like a hot area to keep your team busy for some time to come sadly.
Thanks Guys
👍
It truly is a blessing when you are able to remove these horrible lines, nets etc. before the damage has begun! Thank you for giving her a second chance.👍🙏🏻❤️
👍
Well done, Denzil. I had my eye on her as well once she was in the net. Had problems keeping my eye on her before that.❤
All those little pups hurding together, so cute, saving the mother from certain future trouble was a great rescue. Thankyou OCN. 🤗💝🏴
Такое сложилось впечатление , что это никогда не закончится😢 Сражаетесь как Дон Кихот с ветряными мельницами, очень жаль 😢😢😢
😔
I like to imagine these encounters become stories amongst the seals..like:
“Your uncle Julius once fought off the humans after getting caught. With one mighty wriggle he burst out of their nets and freed himself from the fishing line around his neck. The humans could only stare in disbelief as he made his way to freedom”
Thank you for saving her 👋❤. Fortunately, not cut 💓✌🦭. Very gorgeous seal mama 😍. Blessing, OCN TEAM ❣.
Thank you my heroes for saving him ❤️ greetings to all 😊🙋🏼
👍
Looking at the babies huddling together is heartbreaking. Because they dont realise that you are helping someones mum, or them even. You do a seriously super job. And the fact that you did it off your own backs is remarkable. You are all remarkable , even the children. Thank you all for showing the plight of these seals and other marine life, to the world.
Thank you!! ❤❤❤ OCN!
👍
Thank you💙💙
Thank you men for saving the seals! Thank you OCN!

I used to be one of the guilty ones that threw their fishing lines and trash on the ground but I've since changed my ways due to these videos and now I even pick up other people's trash
Thank you for helping her. ❤OCN
👍
This is really the year when all the justice is being served, y'all stay on top of rescuing seals like you always have but this, to me it also looks like you won't encounter many entanglements(most likely you will ofc but it'd be a good thing if that were the case). Y'all just stay taking Ws and keeping the environment clean, stay up team🤗🙏🏾🌊😍.
I love that big first breath once the entanglement is cut! A very lucky Mumma ❤
Thanks to Team OCN for doing this dangerous work!!
Today is another excellent day to STOP EATING FISH
👍
💕
Like a well oiled machine, this team sees and saves, making it look effortless. Despite it taking great skill and energy.
💗💗 Thank You OCN 💗💗
👍
Big Mama did say thank you ❤
Big healthy looking seal! Healthier now she hasn’t got that line round her neck!🙂
Good job done 👍🏴
That was a Big Mama Monday with the team for a change. Question for anyone who knows-approximately when is the Snoek season in Namibia? Well done gentlemen for making Big Mama’s life a whole lot better.🦭🌊💙
Hehe Look-a-Like females. Heck they all look the same too me. Except for the big bulls that do stick out. But its a reason im here and you guys are on the beach doing wonders each day.
i enjoy watching the rescues. i look forward to watching how a seal is saved and released into the waters.
👍
Well spotted Denzil. Thanks guys.
👍
And another runs for freedom. ❤
....And another one (snoek line) bites the dust. Well done.
❤Team OCN 👍😎✊

@@OceanConservationNamibia While current efforts may be a small fraction of the scale of the problem, your work has brought enormous significance to troubled and suffering seals affected by plastic waste. I am so grateful to all the animal rescue organizations that are working to make a difference in the lives of animals. You are all heroes
Great save!
Thanks for helping big mama❤👍

Good catch Denzil ! I love the teamwork by the rescuers. ❤❤❤

Great job guys. I always enjoy your videos. Watching from Pennsylvania, USA.

Another Great Job...

Un abrazo muy grande a todos
🙂👍
Grumpy momma seal!
Great work as always folks!! 👍👍
👍
❤❤❤❤❤❤
I've often wondered if those [who had lines/nets cut off] cognitively understand that they were just helped by those scary upright mammals. If they understand that they had been freed from something they should have around them.
Thank you guys for all your hard work! Team OCN ❣️

With the poor vision of the seals, would it not be helpful to create a visually camouflaged shield out of cardboard that is roughly the same color as the beach sand? I think you could get much closer to the herd before they scramble. You could use the shield to get close, then discard the shield and start the chase. It might prove useful at times when you crawl up on the seals. The shield might get you closer. With vision slits on the shield you could observe them without being seen. I would be curious to see how close you could get to them.
I might also suggest light brown jackets and pants to blend in with the sand a little better.
I absolutely love watching your videos, especially the ones with very young pups. They are so incredibly cute!!
Previous response from Ocean Conservation Namibia:
We have tried different rescue methods and camouflages in the past and concluded that how we do it now is the best way. The truth is, seals smell us and hear us before they see us. We want to keep each rescue as quick as possible.
We have tried blinds in the past, and they were quite successful, but they were really not practical. We have to constantly keep an eye on the target as we approach and also carry our rescue nets.
We surely could work out something that works, but we really do not want to 'lose' entangled seals in the testing process. As we grow older, we might actually have to look into it 😉
Boa noite!
❤❤❤❤❤
Buen trabajo 👍👍😸
Goooooood job

Good job!

Miten te jaksattekin pelastaa aina vaan joka päivä? Olette nopeita urheita ja kilttejä pelastajia, kiitos 👍🌹😊
Tämä on taito, jota emme toivoisi koskaan kehittävän, mutta olemme valitettavasti jo erittäin kokeneita.
At what point are there too many of these Seals? Are they prey for Killer Whales and Sharks?
No predators prey on Cape fur seals along these colonies. The water is simply too murky and shallow for sharks to attack, and orcas that frequent this area only once or twice a year do not seem to be interested in them.
Ive seen Alaskan coastlines littered with much garbage 😢 Toss your garbage in the river, and let the tide take it away.. It doesn't go far, but it's disastrous. 💔 Plastic diapers and all other garbage. You can imagine all the "tossed" fishing gear 😢😢
Мне всё время кажется, что кто-то из спасателей говорит по-русски. Нет?
Нет 😁
@@OceanConservationNamibia показалось.😀
After the snoek line was removed she scanned the group of you looking defensive before she thought better of it and ran back to the ocean. Today was her lucky day and yours! Great job spotting her in that huge mass of seals and then freeing her of her entanglement in a quick catch and release. You guys are amazing!
🦭😇💕💕😊👍
Great job guys💯%👍🙏💖💖💖
😮...The comment you made about seeing a fleet of snoekboats going out and expecting to see the snoekline entanglements to show up any day now 😢 That really got to me for some reason. Such a close, direct cause and effect. Why does that even still hit home, since I already know all this? Shocking all over again; thank you. It shows we need to keep hearing it and we need to be shaken up all the time to stay in the 'urgent' mode. 🌊🦭✂️🌍💙
You are doing a great job. 🦭🦭🦭👍👍👍👍👍👋
You can tell her feel of freedom as soon as the line was cut. Just like she was yelling let me go I’m free now. ❤❤🦭
