It’s impressive that as a fashion influencer/content creator, you did not buy clothes for six months. You might be one of the few people in the space that can do that because you often focus more on the philosophical and sociological aspects of fashion rather than the actual clothing itself. My question now is, how much free shit did you get in these six months and did it satisfy the consumerist, materialist urges
I'm from southamerica (continent) and for years in my infancy i could only buy clothes twice a year, most of the things i wore were hand me downs. We were really broke. So, i've learn to chose carefule what i buy now.
Ladies or gents might like Laini ozark. She’s really into not getting new stuff, and though she doesn’t talk about masculine clothing that much , there’s some great vibes there
My dad has an old leather baseball glove that he has owned since he was a child. The glove is about 50 years old. It has so much character to it. All worn in, softened over the years, fits your hand perfectly, and it makes the perfect smack when you catch a ball with it. The vibe and feeling of that glove is my fashion north star.
I been working on construction sites since I’m like 15 and Tadek, the polish dude who teached me everything has a cap that is so used that the textile on the brim is completely worn out until the first sewing. Maybe not my North Star but definitely as influential to me as margiela’s whole career
I flip-flop between rainbow pastel fits that make me feel like I'm about to go bowling and get a milkshake to all black outfits that make me feel like I'm about to sneak into hightech, cyber punk themed fortress. I don't know what the north star of these two are right now (I keep these clothes in separate spaces too) I guess maybe I like clothes that turn me into a character... But that seems so broad. How can I mix them together? I've honestly been so overwhelmed that I've only been wearing tank tops, jeans and flannel for the past 2 weeks.
honestly, "clothes that turn me into a character" might be broad, but ur north star doesnt have to be super specific etiher (like in the video used the example for "high quality clothes" or "simple stuff" yknow), and I think the more u explore that concept u will be able to figure it out better. if u manage to combine that pastel+cyberpunk stuff u'll prolly look straight up like an anime character and honestly that cool af like i think i'd say my northstar is black clothes hahah even in different styles i try (more goth, punk, or simple, skaterboy looking, doomer, girly, boyish, whatever) at the end of the day its just black clothes, might be broad, but it works for me keep it up!
VISION BOARD! Or Pinterest or screenshots album. Try thinking of some shows or movies with outfits you really like and note who wears them. Maybe the characters have a common personality trait you identify with. The difference in aesthetic may just be a difference in genre, but same personality at the core. Like reliable friend aesthetic in Cartoon Network is pastel, but reliable friend aesthetic in HBO is tech wear.
I gotta say thanks for these videos man. Fashion was something I never knew I'd be into, and now that I'm out here trying new fits besides a hoodie and sweats my confidence and self image has skyrocketed.
bro, i dont have a pot to piss in poor, i CANT buy ANYTHING but FOOD. im still rocking the clothes ive curated for the past 15 years, and every time i step out my drip is on point. i have an enormous hoard of wardrobe from over the years, and i agree, you have to find a vibe of what youre trying to portray in a fit.
The stylist Lloyd Boston once wrote, “People don’t run out of clothes, they run out of ideas.” The wardrobe is there in your closet. Barring any significant changes in your life (pregnancy, weight loss/gain), go in there and start looking for more ideas.
if I see someone walking around with a hoodie that says NPC on it I'm gonna assume they have a league of legends chat history that would cause a race war, but the details are nice
Earthy athletic is my north star. My materials are sporty polyester fabrics, then not only my color palette but with the accessories I often sourced from the fishing hobby, help edge out an earthy feel. Seriously thank you for making me come to this realization. Shopping with this nrw awareness is going to be a blast 🎉
My style has developed as such because I personally feel I’m not ‘cool’ or ‘street’ enough, which given today’s streetwear-heavy offerings actually greatly narrows down what I actually want to buy. The worst thing a retail assistant can say to me is ‘(Insert celebrity) has worn this’ because that instantly turns me off buying it, or similarly, seeing a celebrity wear a certain brand. I now feel like a wannabe in the who-wore-it-better stakes. It used to be that I could focus on the niche labels that didn’t have the budgets to court celebrities, but now all of them are wearing Thom Browne and SS Daley and every other emerging designer under the sun. For a while I clung to the fragile queer bohemian character that most guys wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole (Rick Owens is very queer but in a fierce way that I cannot handle). And I still love Alessandro Michele for having the balls to make that the raison d’être iof a major brand like Gucci. But thanks to him, now you have Bad Bunny in a beribboned Tanner Fletcher suit. Most of It if of course Editorial irony, and the instagram bros will likely still not wear the more blousy Gucci or Comme offerings. So I do occasionally yield to buying something that, thanks to its unpopularity, ends up on 70% off even though it’s a technically-complex runway look. So ironically (and thankfully) celebrity culture and social media have made me want to buy a lot less. My one weakness is Japanese labels though, even when they are referencing something inherently ‘cool’ like grunge or punk, it somehow always feels scaled down and twee enough for a 5’3” Asian guy.
My North Star is functionality & practicality, I like comfort but also have it be stylish & classic. I tend aim for workwear, leisure wear & mens dress wear. I like things that can handle the construction yards but stylish enough to wear on a date. I'd say in the last few years I've started to experiment with colours and fits (like baggy, slim, skinny, oversized, tapered, etc). I use to mess around with Goofy like 5 or so years ago but it's hard to find anything made with good quality when it's goofy or novelty. I want whatever I have to last years not fall apart after a season.
This is really great advice. I would add that you can have several "north stars". E.g. mine are, in order of importance: bright colours, oversized and suitable for wearing at work.
My North Star is clothes that look like they'd taste good in a cup of coffee. Which means lots of my favorite color BROWN, which I know this channel loves too 🥰🤎
Basically I want to look like I fell out of 30 years ago, like I'm Will or Jazz from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. If I'm not rocking color block I'm doing African patterns, or boldly colored athleisure, or a Hawaiian shirt than can be seen from space with how colorful it is. Rarely I go straight for a vapourwave look. Sometimes I mix in a slight rocker/punk bent with accessories or go more hippy. Being a big fun overgrown kid is my North Star of fashion.
