      A friend of mine's dad who was an engineer back in the day had a model 3 and I thought it was the coolest looking computer and now all these years later I still think it's a pretty nice looking machine.

      Thanks! I agree, great looking machine. I had been after a TRS-80 model 3 for many years, but most of the ones I found were in bad shape (the case paint wears off easily) and all the nice units were out of the local area and I didn't want to have something like this shipped hoping it would arrive it in one piece. As for your high score, indeed, it's still there, however I will try and knock it off or at least down the list at some point ;-)

    my father brought this home as our first computer when i was a child. He was always fooling around with it. He was an electronics engineer which also meant computers at that time. That was before there were any degrees dealing with just computers. He programmed a little math game for me to help me with my math on it. this is so nostalgic for me.

      Same here. These machines were just a little bit before my time. My family's first computer had proper graphics and sound (TI99-4/a) so whenever I stumbled across a TRS-80 somewhere I more or less dismissed it since it wasn't really a games machine and as a kid, that's all I really was interested in. Neat to see some software pushing the limits of character mode. Also neat that they auto-booted from disk all the way back then. Would be interested in hearing the sound from the cassette you mentioned.

    • @geekwithsocialskills
      @geekwithsocialskills  2 роки тому +2

      @@retrobitstv The TI99-4/a is better than a VIC-20, but not as good as a Commodore 64, but I'm sure you already know that LOL. I really tried liking the TI99-4/a when I had one a few years ago (didn't own one BITD) and growing up as a Apple II and C64 kid, I always giggled at friends that had them. I do however appreciate them for what they are now as an adult. As for the TRS-80 model 3 and sound out of the cassette player, I've got that sorted now and will be showing that off in October at some point, so stay tuned.

    A Model III was my first computer. First time I ever used one was a computer class during the summer I signed up for. The school had a bunch of them networked together. Liked it so much that I badgered my parents into getting me one. Unfortunately I didn't have any drives for it and relied upon a cassette player. Mine started out as a 16K but a friend who also had a Model III installed a Model 4 upgrade kit in his so we swapped boards (with memory size badge) so I was maxed out at 48K. Which would have been great if it would have had a disk drive. Wish I still had that thing but when I got my Tandy 1000 EX with that glorious color screen I lost all interest in it and sold it.

    This was the second computer I ever used after the Model 1. I first learned about them from a sixteen-page insert in an issue of Action Comics where Superman worked with two students who were known as the TRS-80 Computer Whiz Kids. Smartest marketing I’ve ever seen to this day. Later that summer at 4H camp I finally got to try BASIC on the Model 1. It was great. Awesome memories.

    Your Matrix demo will run slightly faster if you use integer variables. You can either suffix each variable with % or use DEFINT to declare them as integers. That 2MHz CPU needs all the help it can get. :)

One program I was especially proud of was a Star Trek-like game I wrote whose most fun part was the transporter, using the primitive graphics we had available on that machine. The most memorable part of our class was the teacher. He was a retired Army computer scientist who worked on some of the descendants of the ENIAC in 1960s and 1970s Cold War Europe and Turkey. His stories really lit a fire in some of us to pursue CS or IT in later life.
