What makes pro armwrestlers different from other strength athletes?

- Pro armwrestlers often seem to on the surface defy the realms of physical possibility by defeating comfortably opponents that appear significantly larger and stronger overall. The question is, how do they do it?
In this video we will answer that question by interviewing some pros, including Devon Larratt, and I will test out my strength against a 170kg giant.

Its the width of your wrist compared to your hand width if your wrist is very wide almost the same width as your hand or bigger you will be able to produce freakish power to enable you to control your opponents wrist . That being said work on extending your forearm stsmina then conquer
I would love to see Samson grow in this sport. He seems to be a fairly quick learner.

Yes. Cause Ryan gets a lot of crap but he is really good and guy was ahead of the curve from most people.
The problem is the money. There's just not enough money in arm wrestling to justify dedicating your life to it. I mean really, what do they make off a championship fight, like a couple hundred grand? Dude could instead get into boxing and then you're talking tens of millions for a championship fight. Even in MMA he could make more. Arm wrestling is unfortunately still like a backyard sport
@@matthewviramontes3131 the problem is only money if people aren't willing to put their passion into it and help grow the sport. Prize fighting wasnt always something people made a living out of either. The average NFL salary in 1970 was $23,000 a year (an average driven up by contracts like Unitas'), and plenty of players had regular jobs and played football on the side.
None of these sports would have left the back yard without passionate people willing to make a sacrifice to help make them grow.
@@theangrypelican5270 Or the current top arm wrestlers can refuse to pull unless the purse is way higher. That's one thing Bobby Fischer did in chess, he just outright refused to play unless they paid him more. Because honestly, both Devon and Levan should be guaranteed at least a million a piece for their upcoming match, but I doubt they'll even get a fraction of that.

I’m 52 and recently arm wrestled 2 guys in their 20’s who were in good shape.
Using some of techniques I learn from your vids, I destroyed them.

Lots of young guys have pretty muscles. That's good for older guys who have used there bodies.
Idk young guys have things like explosiveness and stamina but that old man strength is real lol I know a lot of older guys that seem a lot stronger than the average young athlete. A couples think of ones a construction worker the other is a mechanic

That was excellent! I ran into the same issue with my 6’9” God Brother with 9.5 inch hands who outweighs me by 80lbs. I could hook, rise, and cup with ease, but my pronation was nullified when he wrapped that catcher’s mitt around my hand. It was so strange being able to supinate, get tight, and hook him like a baby, but having my top roll option totally eliminated. I suppose I could have played the Cobra Rhodes game and re-gripped if I wanted to force the issue, but in the straps I don’t believe top rolling would have been an option. You need to get that guy hooked up with Big Marcus. I can’t even imagine what he would be capable of in a year or more.

are not yet fans. 👍 Can I make a suggestion ? ... The AGE factor , that a man in his 50's can still be
competitive is almost unique to the sport ... An interview with JB would be an obvious thing to include !!

Really enjoyed this video Ryan. I feel like this will help alot of people new to the sport and allow them to pinpoint the important aspects of arm wrestling. Maybe another video on specific exercises for people starting out with minimal equipment could be next. Awesome job!

Dude, you are doing an awesome job promoting.
It was super cool to see Samson improving in real time without any real direct advice. You told him about the lat drag in the strap, sure, but look at his change in posture from the first round to the last. Hips were super far away from the table at first, his elbow was on the back of the pad, he was leaning super far over, exactly like the typical beginner. Then, by the time they got to the strap, Samson was MUCH closer to the table (almost exactly where he needs to be), he was coming forward with his shoulder in the press, backing it off when Ryan started applying side pressure, he was more upright, and was using much more of the pad. I just wanted to point this out cause I thought it was super cool how quickly Samson caught on to this highly technical sport.

You can lift all you want, but that ligament and tendon strength developed from pulling live one a table year after year is a different animal, some guys arms feel like a dam hydraulic press or a bunched up bundle of steel cables.

This movements from Samson were very impressive in the last round. Very intuitive and right. I would say, he is a natural Talent and should try armwrestling more often.:-)
When I studied Exercise Science in college, the first thing you learn is there are TWO PRINCIPLES that govern exercise - SPECIFICITY and OVERLOAD. And that sums up ALL exercise. Train the specific muscles and energy systems needed for a given result/sport using progressive overload with the right FREQUENCY, INTENSITY and DURATION and then add in proper nutrition and rest/recovery and you have everything you need to be the best you can be physically. Fine tune and tweak each component properly and you'll be a winning athlete.
Add in the right mental attitude to fully realize those physical traits you developed. Add in the right genes to be the best in the world.
That's all you have to do. Do any less and you won't realize your potential.

The strength aspect of it is what got me into the sport, this was when i was wrestling actively and we come across really strong people, then there was a guy who came in for a first time and i was advised to teach him some elementary level moves to ease him into, when we gripped up i immediately felt strength that i hadn't felt before and so asked him if he's done this before he said he only done armwrestling trained for it, and took part in local competitions.

Great idea for an episode, it is sometimes baffling to the masses how someone so much smaller than their opponent can make them look so much weaker. I think apart from the experience and the hand control knowledge, isn't it also years and years of hard work and table time, to build the tendons, ligaments, bone density and all the other smaller muscles besides just the biceps and triceps. Muscles that are only really triggered when pulling against an opponent.

I think it’s really JUST TECHNIQUE… Devon just confessed it’s all hand manipulation. You don’t even need to be strong. If you know how to manipulate your opponent’s hand HE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO UTILIZE HIS SUPERIOR STRENGTH.
Forearm strength. If you watch Devon and others like him when they train it emphasizes a ton of forearm exercises. Also wrist strength.

I heard that Chinups / Pullups are the BEST Arm-wrestling exercise.
It makes sense, it's hitting your back, your forearms and your biceps, all the primary muscles you'd use in arm-wrestling.

First off. awesome video! loved the fight at the end, it really showed what technique does and how the strap affects that!
Skinny dude here... and I am an electrician by trade. We do alot of work that strengthen the lower arm muscles. Turning screwdrivers, twisting cables, bending stiff in place with our fingers, pulling cables out the wall and cutting wires and things with pliers etc... basicly alot of pronation workout for the lower arm. Basicly every day I get to a point of lactic acid build up in my lower arms at some points. The fact that we do alot of this work with our arms above our heads mean our muscles adapt to get rid of lactic acids fast even with limited blood supply. Thats what is called endurance....
The few times I arm wrestled my experience have been that I could challenge bigger guys than myself just because I could crush their hands and twist their wrists into uncomfortable positions preventing them from putting down their full upper body force...
And this is exactly what Larrat is an expert at... and now he is also bulked up hugely to previous times... I see Levan having to face a way bigger challange than he thinks.... BUT Levans big hands and wrists can actually take away some of that advantage from Devon.... But my guess is that Devons stamina and endurance combined with his insane lower arm strength will be an eye opener to Levan...
Bonus story: Whenever I met huge dudes who were clearly way stronger than me I would allways challenge them into a bottlecap bending challenge I have made up; You bend and straighten out the same bottlecap 4 times: First you fold it in on it self, then straighten it. then you turn it 90 degrees and bend it inwards again and straghten it out after. Now comes the hard part where big guys start to struggle: Now you bend the bottlecap back over itself until the top side touches itself. again you straighten that back out. At this point fewer than 5 guys have ever managed to do this while me being present. and theese last parts I only know two other people who did: turn the botllecap another 90 degrees and bend it back over itself yet again and straighten it out after that.
This game takes extreeme finger strength AND you need a thick layer of dead skin on your finger tips to avoid baing cut by the sharp edges of the botllecap. There is alot of technique involved in getting a grip that wont cut you and still allow you to transfer enough power to the bend.
I had so much fun seeing big guys cutting up their thumbs and having to give up halfway just to watch me complete the series of bends like it was nothing. :D

Before Larrat and Hafthor, the most memorable for me was Magnus Samuelson vs Nathan Jones (Megaman) in aWorld Strongest Man Competition. Magnus a huge guy himself but was made look very small and skinny beside Megaman, and he ended up breaking Jones's arm in the match. Shocking stuff, that was the first time I realised Arm Wrestlers were much stronger in their own way.
Jones broke his own arm, went completely outside his shoulder in a textbook armbreak position. With 10 mintues of basic instruction that wouldn't have happened.

@@staygold902 I know a great strongman and a professional arm wrestler too, which is why the size differential made no difference but it was shocking at the time as most spectators think bigger is stronger.

One of my favorite things about this sport is watching new guys that are already very strong pull for the first time. You can see them slowly add more and more power during the first pull and there's always that spot where they get surprised that the other guy isn't moving at all lol. I did the same exact thing and so have most of the new guys that show up. I enjoy watching the bigger, stronger guys experience that WTF moment.

Growing up I had a friend who was skinny and completely un-intimidating yet no one, and I mean no one could even challenge him in arm wrestling. I watched him beat everyone in the room one after another without ever being challenged including a couple of guys well over 6 feet and 250+ who have the strength of men that size.
