In this video, Diana Darke, author of the award-winning book, Stealing from the Saracens: How Islamic Architecture Shaped Europe, takes you on a quick architectural journey to see how architectural styles and ideas passed from vibrant Middle Eastern centers, such as Damascus, Baghdad, and Cairo, and entered Europe via gateways including Muslim Spain, Sicily, and Venice through the movement of pilgrims, bishops, merchants, and medieval Crusaders. It’s a rich tale of cultural exchange that will help you see some of Europe’s - and even America’s - iconic landmarks with new eyes.
Diana Darke is a Middle East cultural expert with special focus on Syria. With degrees in Arabic from Oxford University and in Islamic Art & Architecture from SOAS, London, she has spent over 30 years specializing in the region, working for both government and commercial sectors.
She is frequently invited to speak at international events and media networks, such as the BBC, PBS, TRT, Al-Jazeera, and France24. Her work on Syria has been published by the BBC website, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, and The Financial Times. She is a Non-Resident Scholar at Washington’s think-tank MEI (the Middle East Institute).
Diana is also the author of the highly acclaimed My House in Damascus: An Inside View of the Syrian Crisis (2016), The Merchant of Syria (2018), and The Last Sanctuary in Aleppo (2019).

Hats off to you for acknowledging the Muslim contributions. This is how history of art needs to be narrated.
And by what de Islamic architecture was inspired by?
Do you think Islamic architecture was born out of automonous ingenuity? 😄
@@fbabarbe430 yes seems so. It is not even close to the Greek one. I will not shy from saying that the Muslims took up the pure sciences and philosophy of Greeks and took them to the next level.

But I would like to research this and come back. Thanks .
@@fbabarbe430 the islamic architecture have different roots and took something from every architecture but mostly affected by the ancient civilsation in the islamic countries like egypt ,syria abd iraq although now it may not look like them but it took its basics from them and every country added to it its taste that shaped the islamic art and architecture for example the star plate geometry which is one of the most famous islamic geometries was took from ancient egyptian temples and coptic churches same with mashrabiya, mihrab and minbar were took from egypt too

Beautiful! Awesome work.
It is the first time that I discovered that the word "Sarazin" or "Saracin" is in fact only a transformation of "Sarakin" which is the transcription of the Arabic word meaning "thieves". As is the case with the word Assassin which means "Men of the grass" (hashish).
actually Assassin comes from Arabic but it has the same meaning of some one who is a murderer of an important person in a sudden surprise attack for political or religious reasons
Pretty sure saracen is a misnomer relating to Sarah, since Christians[bizzarely] thought Arabs came from Sarah, then claimed Arabs claimed to come from Sarah (as a lie to cover their blunder behind the misnomer). It's pretty funny actually.
Well Assasin is taken from Hashashin word that describe Shi'ah Ismailiah in alamut fotress, their kind like to consum kind of drunk plant called Hasha. Political strugle in Seljuk dynasty blame them when some top political leader get killed. Thats why we use Assasin to killer now day
Hassasins Means Guardians
Saracens is a Crusader reference for Levantine Muslims, and is literally derived from the phrase "Sara('s) sons"/Sara sens = "Saracens", i.e. "the sons of Sara". Sara was the mother of Ishaq ("Isaac"). "Isaac" was the second son of the Prophet Abraham. The Israelites trace their lineage to "Isaac". After the defeat of Byzantium by the Muslims, vast numbers of Christian Israelites (and Jewish Israelites) accepted Islam. The Palestinians and other Levantine people were thus referred to as "Saracens" by the medieval Crusaders.
It makes sense because I have travelled extensively in Europe and I always thought that nearly all of the major European attractions resembled Islamic architecture and it always made wonder as to why …thanks for making this video
The Islamic civilisation was really the mother of civilisation of the world
There's no Islamic civilization but arabo-islamic civilization which is a copy of roman-persian-greek-indian cultures

Thankyou Diana for informing the world of the real history being hidden by the west. You are a truly honest, sincere and well educated woman. I have immense respect for you.
@Galatians 5:1 We have freedom now If it's not hidden, then why teach students about "gothic" and "roman" architecture without the inspiration behind those? Why lie that Goths invented the Gothic architecture??
The Romans called Muslims Saracens, meaning thieves. What's the agenda behind that??
@@RS-le7yd You missed the whole point of the video. The Muslims were inspired by the Romans and it came full circle. The Gothic style is still a european style, as it is not 100% the same as Islamic structures from which it took inspiration from. This video point out how the Muslims took from various different already settled styles and made their own, one of which was Bizantine structrures. Same thing happens with the european Gothic style.

Nice info, I just saw the pointed arches video on the Qutb Minar complex of Mehrauli locality in New Delhi, India, yesterday itself, although I've visited the complex twice in my life, but I saw the reason of using the pointed arch yesterday from the video of Indian state TV, RSTV channel. These pointed arch reduce the load compared to the 180° arch, and make it possible for more and more beautiful arches to be built adjacent to each other, if the height of the pointed arch is increased in proportion to the parallel walls serving as the base of the pointed arch (this is what I understood, I may be wrong, although it is explained in the video of the RSTV).
