    Nice job! A few things I'd add; 1) The drain plug crush washer should be replaced after at least three oil changes, or else it can leak (they cost about $0.50 at the dealer, I keep a dozen on hand). 2) Motorcycle oil is not required in this engine, as it does not have a wet clutch or a common-lube transmission; any quality full-synthetic will keep this engine running for decades.

    nice tutorial! If you lean the bike over even more while draining, you can get pretty much all of the oil out and then you will need a full 1.0 liter to replace it all. Also, I think you are supposed to let it warm up and then sit for about 10 minutes to check the oil. Remember, oil changes are extremely important as there is no legitimate oil filter...magnetic drain plug is not a bad idea as well.

    @grateweb The easiest way to change the coolant is to remove the lower pump hose with the radiator cap removed. The radiator fill cap is under the dashboard; remove the dash cover (above the glovebox) to access it. ONLY use silicate-free coolant (I recommend the Honda coolant sold at the dealer; you'll need two bottles).

  • @bbishoppcm
    @bbishoppcm 13 років тому +1

    @SanftnerDotNet Costs me roughly $8 per oil change, using Royal Purple full-synthetic. You do not need to use motorcycle oil in this engine, as it does not have a common-lube transmission or a wet clutch.

    Just got one of the clones...Q-Link Commuter 250, 10,600 miles. Thanks for the video...it's a big help.

    !!!TO RESET OIL LIGHT!!!
    There is a little "slit" on the rear of the speedometer cover.
    It's about the size of the tip of a screwdriver.
    Press a screwdriver into the slit to reset the oil indicator.

    Thanks for the video, just did my first oil change on my "new" 86 Helix (commuting to work and saving $40 per week). I had one problem, the oil filter plug is stripped and couldn't take it off, so I just replace the oil, but didn't clean the screen. Just order a new one, now I need to figure out how to remove it.

    Just think this little engine is working extra hard to do highway speeds. The 4T oil has high levels of phosphorus/zinc for a better share rate.
    Have you ever ran a chainsaw? The bar oil is different than motor oil. If you use Motor oil as bar oil it boils.

  • @geojap

    How imperative is it to use 4T oil? I just got a Helix and wanted to use some Castrol 10W-40 I had in my garage. Thanks.

  • @mrtestshoot
    @mrtestshoot 5 років тому

    Saw several questions in the comments about viscosity and types of oils to use. First, from the shop manual. Recommended oil. Honda 4-stroke oil or equivalent, API service classification SF or SG. Viscosity 10W-40. That is accompanied by a chart that shows 10W-30 for temps up to 90. 10W40 for temps up to 110 and also 20W-40 also for temps up to 110. For temps up to 120 they suggest 20W-50. These would be outside temps of course...Theoretically the engine will always be the temp set by the thermostat, but it is typical to use thicker oil when it gets hotter. There is no mention of synthetic in the manual.
    Then I tried to find out about currently available Honda oils. That takes you to prohondaoils.com. There they have four Honda 4-stroke oils. Seems their original offering is called GN4 which was upgraded to HP4 with more additives and better viscosity. Later yet they introduced HP4M and HP4S. The M is mineral oil based. If you didn't guess, the S is synthetic. They have a chart showing using GN4 and HP4 for models up through 2006 and using the synthetic for models after 2007. It would infer you shouldn't use synthetic on earlier models but I haven't seen that 2006 vs 2007 cutoff before. I know I used Mobil 1 in my '73 CB350 and it ran like a top with synthetic. Higher revs, more power.

  • @MrHanowski
    @MrHanowski 3 роки тому

    That's the first time I've heard anyone say synthetic oil leaves a better oil film than mineral oil. Usually I hear it said the other way around. Not sure which is correct.

    I live in PA and ride this at least onec a week, to keep the gas flowing.
    So far the exhaust is the only problem, the smallest leak in back pressure will drop your top speed and give you back fire problems.

    I wouldn't run 20-50 weight oil in liquid cooled engine. The pressure might blow past the piston rings. My air cooled VW beetle on the other hand has to use 20-50. 10-40 causes the engine to over heat.

    I just recently purchased a 1987 Honda Helix CN 250, with just under 31,000 miles on it. The Bike runs, and performs, and handles superb for it's age, and mileage. My question for you, is why did you have to "Bump" the Starter Button when you were draining the old oil from the Crank Case ? What does that do ?

  • @zygmuntc
    @zygmuntc  10 років тому

    If you don't touch the filter part and just drain the oil only from the drain plug. 3/4 of a container should be enough.
