    Great video! I've been thinking about this exact subject lately, and what I have realized is that happiness doesn't exist - and what I mean by happiness, is the long-term blissful existence people think comes after becoming rich or hitting some other milestone in life. As you said, happiness is a short-term emotion, and like all emotions, they come and go. And without suffering as a contrast, you cannot truly appreciate the feeling of happiness when it does appear.
    The biggest thing that has made a difference for me in my life is practicing contentment and gratitude for the here and now. Gratitude journaling has especially been helpful for me in this area. It doesn't "make me happy", but what it does it that it allows me to reduce my desire for more, therefore reducing my suffering, by allowing me to put things into perspective and recognize that my life is great as it is right now. I can still take action on my goals and work hard, that's perfectly fine, so long as I can recognize I want that thing because I want that thing, not because I think it will make me happy.

      Interesting! I used to gratitude journal for a year and I stopped because to me it felt more like writing a shopping list every night. I unfortunately couldn't really cultivate the emotion of gratitude through the practice. Any tips?

    • @IsThatWhatYouSaid
      @IsThatWhatYouSaid Рік тому +1

      @@felix4008 Good question.
      The number thing I would advise is "go deep, not wide". So instead of writing a shopping list of all the things you're grateful for, I would recommend focusing on just one, maybe at the most two or three topics at a time that you write about, and write in-depth about every reason why you're grateful for the thing and how it has positively influenced your life, mention specific examples. And if it's a person you're writing about, it can also help to write as if you're writing a letter directly to that person explaining why you're grateful to them and how much they mean to you.
      For example, let's say one day I really feel inspired to write about why I'm grateful for the progress I've made so far in my fitness journey. I'll write about that one thing only: I'll write about how it feels to have a healthy body, how it compares to how I felt before I started working out, how much I appreciate how I look in the mirror, why I'm grateful to move around and do things with my body easily, and how the trials and tribulations of training has shaped my character today.
      I also recommend making it a daily habit or to do it most days of the week, even if you can't write as much on certain days. What I do personally is I set a quota for myself to write at least one thing for at least one sentence every day, it can be either paper or in a digital journal, doesn't matter. Even if I go in not feeling like it, I haven't regretted taking those 5-10 minutes to do so.
      One thing I'll also mention is that as with any self-help practice, it will resonate with some people and it won't for others - so one option to consider is that gratitude journaling may not be for you, and that's perfectly fine if it isn't. But try out the methods I mentioned, and see if it works for you! I'm here if you have any further questions.

    Excellent video! Very relatable topic. This is something I've been grappling with for a while (and still am). I've mostly managed to let go of the external "I'll be happy when...." trap. However, now it is mainly internal, i.e., I'll be happy when I achieve some insight that will bring me permanent peace. The word happy is a loaded term and we all think of slightly different things when we hear the word happy. However, I was wondering how you would differentiate between the idea of happiness (something you would try to let go of) and the idea of internal peace (something you would consider cultivating)?

    • @byrolands
      @byrolands  Рік тому +1

      I would say, the main difference is that happiness can be too easily affected by external factors, while peace is internal and more in our control. Happiness is a fleeting emotion - appreciate it when it's there, and know that it will come back when it's not, but it's important not to chase or get too attached to it (as I mentioned in the video).
      Inner peace, on the other hand, is reliable.
      It's a state of contentment and calmness - when you're able to accept things as they are, either bad or good. When your vision isn't clouded by reminders of the past or wishes for the future, and you can make the right decisions for your current situation, while enjoying the smaller things in life.
      For example, I'm much happier on a warm summer day, compared to a cold, rainy autumn evening. But I can't do anything about it (only change countries). If I'm too attached to the feeling of happiness, during this period, I will be constantly be thinking that something isn't right. I will be wishing for it to be summer again, when life was supposedly much better and more enjoyable (yet summer is only 1/4 of the year, so that's a very bad strategy).
      But if I acknowledge, that some of my negative emotions are coming from this, understand that I can't change the seasons and accept the situation as it is, then I can adapt and think of ways I could make this period more enjoyable for myself.
      (This is actually a real example and I'm trying to appreciate the cold season as well now :D)
      But how do we get there, how do we achieve inner peace?
      Again, it's not easy and it will be a lifelong journey. But it all starts with self-awareness - being conscious of your thoughts, emotions and behaviors.
      Now that you've learned about this topic, occasionally, you could start to notice it in your mind and try to set yourself in the right direction.
      Helpful tools, that I also want to get into more, are meditation, journaling or therapy(to learn more about yourself).
      Thank you for watching and leaving a comment, Felix! Hopefully I answered your question. :)

    • @felix4008
      @felix4008 Рік тому +1

      @@byrolands I've never really thought about the two as separate but that makes a lot more sense. Asking yourself how to be happy is a way more difficult question that asking yourself how to be peaceful. I think that in of itself shows that peacefulness is more in our control. While with happiness it feels more like rolling a dice. I think happiness and peace are somewhat intertwined for me. I guess I'd phrase it as: I'll be happy once I'm peaceful. If you asked me which positive emotion I'd be hoping to cultivate I'd answer serenity/tranquility/peace/calm. However, I guess on some deeper level I am still holding on to the "I'll be happy when..." mentality. It's difficult to let go of. Also when it comes to how to achieve peace I keep falling in the same trap, "When I find the right method/tool/practice I'll be peaceful."
      Also thanks for sharing your approach to it. I always find that part fascinating. For me a strong focus has been trying to be present. Doing one thing at a time, not rushing. When I snap out of the endless stream of thoughts is probably when I feel the most peaceful. Sometimes this happens randomly. There's also a book that usually brings me into this state. The effects of meditating, although I would recommend it, have been somewhat limited for me. If I meditate for 20 minutes, I'll feel calm for the 20 minutes during and 20 minutes after but the effects fade quickly. I mainly use it as a "reset" when the day is not going like I'd like it to. Journalling has been great. Especially more recently I've been challenging my own assumptions while journaling (by repeatedly asking why) and that's been great. I can highly recommend therapy. I've started going recently and it's a great way of getting an outsider to challenge some of your assumptions. I would say all in all the most impactful habit in my life is going on daily walks. Although, I guess the journey to internal peace is somewhat personal to everyone.
      Thank you for your extensive and thoughtful response! Looking forward to your next video :)
