im so glad russell picked this song for dot and bubble. it's so vapid and meaningless it works perfectly. idk that was definitely my favorite episode of the series so far!!
Always loved this song - and old enough to remember the original release. Just hope todays music lovers can appreciate the fun of the track and not worry about "body shaming"...
This is one catchy UK pop song I never heard as a kid/teen. It came out in 1990, I thought I might have heard it on the radio when I visited family in Germany that year but I didn't. Then I saw a clip of it in a video done by Todd In The Shadows where he was talking about UK pop songs and groups that never made it to America. This was one of them, along with the Cheeky Girls' "The Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum)". LOL!
I was 12 when this came out. When I was with my dad in the car this came on the radio. He said to me 'You like this song don't you?' and turned up the radio volume. Seems like yesterday when this came out (I am 42 now)
As a child of the late 80s/early 90s, I always remember this being played in the pub/club of the caravan park we had weekend holidays at every summer (my grandparents owned a chalet there). It was a dead cert that this would be played by the DJ, glitter ball & lights all going full pelt, with that tinsel type curtain hanging behind him. There was a clown who did regular shows too - Uncle Razz or Razzy the Clown - in the old style of televised magicians (Tommy Cooper or Paul Daniels spring to mind).
How many more thousand views must this have got in the past few days? 🤣I just wish there had been a cameo appearance by Timmy Mallett somewhere in the episode for those of us who know. I would say have him "singing" the song in the episode instead of Ricky September, but you can't kill Timmy Mallett in Doctor Who, you just can't.
Recently I discovered that this song has a health risk associated with being eaten by a giant space-slug controlled by a (justifiably, if we're honest) brassed-off AI assistant.
I was 11 years old when this came out. Spent that summer in Torquay with my parents, on the beach and watching the World Cup matches. I seem to recall it spent a few weeks at No.1. A timely reminder that not all the music back then was worth remembering!
I remember an article claiming Timmy Mallett did not actually sing on this record as he could not hit notes and was singing flat, a schoolteacher Everton Barnes took credit for the vocal work , never did hear how this ended.

My only disappointment with Doctor Who: Dot and Bubble was that the opening theme wasn't replaced with this or at least mixed in to it!
