The song reminds me of my first visit to the Field Museum in Chicago. Our eighth-grade class trip. May 1962. There I was, wandering around the Africa displays , in awe, standing in front of the display of the man-eating lions of Tsavo. The song was playing in my head. Wonderful memory.
This came on while my client was watching TV. I don't know if you've ever heard a 55 year old with cerebral palsy and the mind of a 7 year old sing this song, but let me tell you, it is absolutely exceptional. He got a round of applause and absolutely made my day.

Videotape was new and fairly crude in 1961; 6 Twilight Zone episodes were recorded that way, but the inability to easily edit it convinced CBS to switch back to film. I don't know when the first song promotional clip was recorded on video, but during the 1960s, a number of them were put into film cartridges and send out to jukebox-like machines (allegedly controlled by the mafia) that played them for a few quarters. Gosh, this version brings back some school memories of the early 80s. I had forgotten the video was very tongue in cheek too. As I recall a snippet of this version was used in an episode of The Young Ones, where one of the students discovers a lion tamer at work in his bedroom.
Despite it always being a tight fit, he always managed to get it in with the help of artificial lubricants.. But before The Tokens version, the traditional chant was very rough with varying improvisation between renditions, and nowhere near as well polished and arranged. The song in the form we recognise it as today, stems from and traces mainly back to classic The Tokens production.
