  • This DIY shows you how to replace both the intake and exhaust camshaft sensors on the m54 engine. This video applies to many models with the m54 and m52 engines (e53, e39, e46, e83, e60, and more!). A bad cam sensor can cause random stalling, check engine lights, misfires, hard starts, and more. Make sure you replace the sensor and the o-ring when doing this repair. #bmwrepair #bmw #mechanic

Before you "Fish the wire out" make sure you attach a lose wire to the connector with a duct tape and pull it out. That way you can re-attach the connector of the new sensor simply pull the other end of the lose wire to feed the new sensor connector with lead in the exact position of the old one. Work smart, not hard

I just love the giggles when you start by saying, "you have to feel for the hole" Brilliant!!! I've always maintained the we'd make great gynaecologists, as much of our work is done by feel and mental imagery. I worked for a number of years in a Fiat dealership, the English translation,, from Italian, on every oil filter was: "lubricate ring and screw until tight" so many laughs were had. Never lose the schoolboy, or girl, sense of humour. I laughed out loud when you two got the giggles. Thank you for not editing it out 🙂

Ive fixed everything from fan clutch, thermostat, electric fan, cooling system, all sensors and brakes. Thanks man. Always love your helpful great content. Thank you! I have had and I believe many people have a problem with mt S54 on my M3 stalling out often when I put the car into reverse as well once the car is hot and been running for a while the car just stalls out. Ive tried to figure this out as have many others. I can tell the change comes as soon as I put the car into reverse don't even have to use the clutch. The car starts stalling when i put it into reverse and it's idling. I had a BMW indie shop look at the car and try to figure out whats wrong. They checked the idle control valve but that wasn't the problem they did a software update and no good. My car is a swapped out 2002 330CI to a 2006 M3. Maybe that is part of the problem. As well when the car is hot and I push in the cltch and let the revs fall to idle it will just stall out even if the car is moving (Not in gear mind you). On and on it goes. LOL.

Did both sensors on my 2004 Z4, M54 3.0 engine. Similar but different. The intake sensor was the easiest. The exhaust sensor was very difficult to get to, too cramped of an area. Once I got it out I struggled to get the bolt started in the new part, I decided to take the electric fan out. Should have done that to begin with, one plug, one screw and one expanding rivet and the fan comes out. Anyone doing the exhaust sensor on a Z4, save yourself some frustration and remove the fan first.

I have a 2000 Z3 with a 2.8l. It's kicking my ass trying to figure out why it went from running perfect, to misfiring and running horrible and not even drive able. I changed and checked:
    Both Vanos
    Intake and exhaust cam sensors
    New plugs
    New coils
    New MAF
    DISA is fine, holds vacuum
Fuel pressure is rock solid, even when running like shit.
Smoke checked and NO vacuum leaks.

check this, i had a crank but hard start. Changed oil filter & regulator/engine temp sensor/crankshaft sensor/fuel pump respectively, doesnt fix my issue. Switched the camshaft sensors between the intake and exhause, turns out i have a bad intake camshaft sensor. So now the bad one is in the exhaust side and the car starts fine.

Question my 04 530i has these same symptoms once the engine is up to temp it will die randomly while parked at idle, or like you said at a red light. Could the sensor need to be replaced without throwing the code for it? Or would it be more of the vacuum side of the motor?

2000 328CI, 134k miles. I got a P0340 code after changing my pre-cam 02 sensors with new BOSCH sensors. I cleared the code and it didn't come back, but I've noticed the car in general can take a few cycles to start up, and the acceleration is not so great, especially when I floor it on the freeway.
