Hi Spencer. Another informative video in your great style. I think your comments on tackling models that match our own individual skill and experience are self-evident, and the Fitter example is a great one. It can be built into a lovely model (I know because mine is close to finished) but only if you have the range of skills and knowledge that match the kits demands. Videos like your help us to figure that out. Keep up the great work.
I do agree. I do feel that when you do come to build "certain" kits, special hobby, Kitty hawk or such others, you do need to have the "basics" of modelling, making sure join lines are clean, no glue marks, sanding. I felt that this explanation was clear enough and maybe was taken out of context by some others. Granted I am not saying people who arent as advanced should not build them, But for the best results they need the basics to be 100%

I've read many of your articles as they come up on the Tamiya FB page, and I read and enjoyed your latest posting. And I agree with you in many respects. I've seen many younger modelers or less experienced modelers shell out a lot of money on big kits, and lots of aftermarket parts, and become so overwhelmed they just buckle under it all.
That being said as well I can thing of several kits that I've purchased over the years that have been difficult that I stuck with that I feel have really brought my skills up. The Tamiya 1:32 A6M2b, one of my favourite kits of all time to build, was the kit that really got me into the world of airbrushing, and taught me a lot more about building models. Scared my stiff when I opened the box and studied the instructions, but in the end I really loved that model. The kit challenged me to try and do better and I think because of that I was able to learn a lot more.
Another thing I've noticed Spencer, is anytime you write a posting, I see a few "culprits" shall we say, that love to bash around other modelers. Every time you post your blog they are the ones causing a lot of grief and laughing all the way to their keyboard. I've no idea what their problem is and really why they feel the need to do this. Sometimes I read peoples comments (mostly seen on the Tamiya FB page) and I really begin to wonder if they at all read the article or skimmed the first 3 lines, as their comments are so left field and far removed from the topic, I have no idea where they are coming from.
As a builder of WWII Japanese aircraft, I don't know why I haven't got that Ki-61 yet either ha ha :D
I've watched your videos for some time and think the advice you've given is pretty much spot on for a beginner I.E ME. You've reinforced my idea that surely I don't, need to buy all those products. I grew up reading about Shepard, and Verlinden ,and I'm sure they didn't have them either.
You mentioned modelers purchasing all those products, from company A, and I wondered if they are, rather than enhancing my skills, actually make me rely on them to get a certain effect, and never really learn those basics. (nothing against the products for those that want them and can afford them)
Anyway, personally, I wouldn't say "basic" per se as it under estimates the time, and the practice needed to get that skill set ( I'm still learning). I would, if I may quote one of my teachers, when we called something basic, he would correct us and call them FUNDAMENTAL. As they are important to build on. As you mentioned they can be important when wanting to move onto a much more difficult kits or effects.
Thank you for your videos about this topic, as I was beginning to think..."did i really need all those products,racks,paints, that I'm seeing on other youtube channels, and I can relax a bit now and not buy them.But use the money to buy another kit, and learn something new. I attempted one thing new, but I still find those fundamental mistakes catching my eye.
Thanks for the update video, Spencer. Nice job on the ICM kit. May i ask what paint you used for the doped aluminum finish? Tamiya spray?
Yeah, the shiny 'metal' panels are Tamiya AS-12 decanted and thinned with Mr. Color thinners and the doped areas, the same, but dulled with around 30% Mr. Color Light Aircraft Grey. Thanks for the comment!
I haven't done one of these in forty years. From personal experience, if you can't commit to the build, don't even bother. I'm starting back up again with Tamiya's Spitfire Mk XVIe 1/32 scale. Anyway...do your homework. I found out as much as I could about my kit and discovered that the firewall is not correct. I printed out a picture of the actual firewall as a template. Plan ahead...I'm adding two mods the kit doesn't have. Gun bays for the .303 machine guns in both wings as well as the gun bay for the 20mm Hispano cannon alongside a .50 caliber machine gun, ammo belts and all. Second mod is adding the fuel tank between the cockpit and the firewall, open the radio transceiver box and the battery box. scratch building them is easy enough, wouldn't be the first time. My last build back in the day was a 1/32 F/A-18 Hornet by Tamiya. I added fiber optics to the instrument panel to maker it light up. Tons of fun! The love of modelling justifies the expence IMO.

You are quite right in all you say Spencer. And as Northern Modeller said, you got to master the basics to get the best from the kit and hobby. A lot of folk want too much to quick!,a common theme these days on many levels.

A good example of what you are talking about, is how to handle canopies and clear parts. They crack, and do all manner of awful things if abused. I would want to have the skills of masking, fairing the windshield into the fuselage, removing the centre seam etc down before ruining my 'dream' kit. I find that my knowledge of chemicals, solvents etc is also always improving, which it needs to.
You make perfect sense
I think another part of the argument about what to build is when considering ability it makes no sense to purchase an expensive kit when learning. I have found it makes me apprehensive about making mistakes because I dont want to screw up something that cost me a small fortune. It was only after many years that I decided I was skilled enough to take on a WingNut Wings kit and even then having all that experience I still had cause for pause. Bottom line is it is better to purchase a dozen ten dollar kits and using them to practice on before attempting the kit you love that you want to put on display.
