That is a great groove, feel, whatever you want to call it. Lester Butler was a great loss - don't mess with drugs! Really. And what a superb band, playing AS a band, as a team, all wanting that same thing... This is downhome, downright dirty stuff. Ultimately, it's a lesson in how to play a shuffle and how to play The Blues. It's going into my favourites right now! Many thanks to nofightindotcom for this gem.
These guys were too dangerous to last. Every picture of Lester, he had that far away look in his eye. The kind of look Syd Barrett had. They were the cutting edge of the cutting edge.
Hi zelonious I respect your opinion. Where I'm coming from is, apart from the crackle emanating from the harp amp, this performance - the whole thing, the whole band - is PERFECT. I appreciate that players like Sugar Blue, Kim Wilson, Rod Piazza and so many others (you know their names) have something that Lester doesn't BUT his energy, and commitment to the music are a great inspiration... He understood the healing element in this music - and that's an essential element. Best wishes
+Mick Kennedy A tight band like this can lay back and feel the groove til the cows come home, and needless to say these guys were tight! Lazy Lester! That is a driving beat, and they did it so well!
I actually watched this performance (Incl Time to Ride) at the time of Transmission. It was on Ray Cokes show called MTVs Most Wanted. He was a brilliant host and had many great guests in that he used to interview and he was a great comedian taking the piss out of himself all the time. Other guests he had on the show were Joe Satriani, Paul Rodgers etc. I saw the Red Devils at the Borderline Club in 93 and recorded the gig myself on a Sony Pro Cassette Recorder. I also saw play around the same time at a lunch time free performance at Tower Records in Picadilly. Great times. They were rather unique at the time because they were so old school and probably in the same bracket as bands like Burning Tree and Black Crowes (2 other bands I saw at the start) in bringing a Retro sound from the late 60s and keeping it alive and vibrant. You might enjoy this performance I found i.e. the gig I attended ua-cam.com/video/9kp5ZUNq6AI/v-deo.html
fun watching bands 'catch a fire' ! 1993 working musick retail at Phantasmagoria. Live early July 1993 @Montreal Int'l Jazz Fest = Labatt Blue[s] stage @2100 & Le Spectrum @0000 celebrating Paul "the kid" Size 20th birthday!
Lester was a huge cat I wish I would if gotten to see him play live. His tone was unreal. He played through two Bassmans at 50w each. The Devil probably has the same rig if he blows harp

Les told me once, "There's only one reason for men to want long hair". I've always had long hair. He is dead; he wasn't so great. people should stop letting assholes off the hook. People let people think they're "Cool" when they ain't. Still, I think it's cool that they put this in my feed after Pat Robertson's death; I had an English Class with Les in Mr. Wexler's 7th grade@ Lincoln Jr. High. There was a time of scandal when Les's sister Had "hysterical blindness from LSD. In truth, a lot of views from Les could be mirrored in Pat Robertson.
it seems to me that I was able to play along very successfully on a C harp. Which I found very interesting, being aware of cross-harp keys and whatnot. Haven't done it for decades, so don't hold me accountable, lol.
@zelonious He probably wasn't the most technical player but Rick Rubin thought he would tie his name to him. Alan Wilson wasn't real technical but listen to him with Hooker doing Boogie Chillen and try not to feel good
Dang it! He was the perfect blues harmonica rock star. Great stage presence and kept his solos true to the roots.
One of the greatest blues bands ever. Lester such a great harp player and singer. This band had it's own sound!!!!
What a great groove!

Such a superb, tight band. Lester Butler was nothing short of phenomenal.
standard comment... when MTv could play Music. OMG this is it... no more no less... straight from the blues soul...
Somehow I ended up with a live show tape of theirs back in the 90's and MAN! I wanted to play harp like that!
These guys were too dangerous to last. Every picture of Lester, he had that far away look in his eye. The kind of look Syd Barrett had. They were the cutting edge of the cutting edge.
Just amazing...
I wish I'd seen this band - they're great!
I can stay here all night. Love that guitar lick at 3.50-3.53.

Lester, unlike most white blues harp players, didn't overdo it, he played good soulful lines and with great rhythm....and counter rhythm.

Not bad at all didn't think I'd like but it grew on me being a northern guy from Boston. Keep on keeping on with those 💙 blue's
The best. Simple.

so good!
Great exciting band so cool to ..Wall of sound ..brill harp playing great singing to ..One off to
Seen him once.
It was Great
Early Fleetwood mac 1967 thru 1969 was in my opinion.
Lester was a huge cat I wish I would if gotten to see him play live. His tone was unreal. He played through two Bassmans at 50w each. The Devil probably has the same rig if he blows harp
And an original EP1 Tube Echoplex. A great, modest guy, who asked me "Was my Juke ok?" at the King King in LA.
Banda top!!
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 BANDA TOP!!
Wish I had their full gig on DVD at the PinkPop festival in Holland from early 90s.
I know there are about 3 videos of it here on UA-cam.

Hi roywebber
Yes, it's too bad that this is twenty years old...Where's my time machine? I'll gladly exchange my Les Paul and Vox AC30 for it!
Probably the best white blues band ever.
anyone knows wich key is the harp?
Thanks Thierry!
A harp playing in E....of course!!!!
it seems to me that I was able to play along very successfully on a C harp. Which I found very interesting, being aware of cross-harp keys and whatnot. Haven't done it for decades, so don't hold me accountable, lol.
Another one gone
@zelonious He probably wasn't the most technical player but Rick Rubin thought he would tie his name to him. Alan Wilson wasn't real technical but listen to him with Hooker doing Boogie Chillen and try not to feel good
Yep, the two best white harmonica players ever, Alan and Lester!!
Alan Wilson was a technically good player so was Lester. Musselwhite Oscher, Richard Newell, Paul deLay are great too
