  • This S&W .22LR is a great all around target pistol. The bull barrel and awesome sights make it very accurate. It is a great, lower cost option to the Ruger 22-45 or mark III. Like I said in the video, I have fired thousands of rounds through this thing, and not one mechanical malfunction. Every hiccup that I have ever encountered was ammo related (failure to fire with a good hit on the primer.) Of course these are all my experiences, and .22's have a tendency to be picky with ammo. However, if you do have an issue, S&W offers great customer service. If you're looking for a fairly inexpensive, fun to shoot, target or training pistol. Look no further, the S&W 22A is an excellent choice in my opinion. Have fun, and be safe!

    Great review. I got mine 16 years ago with hi-vis sights & rosewood grips from the factory. Eats every kind/brand ammo w/o ftf or ftf.

    If the pistol was built in houton maine check to see who tested the pistol. I used to be a test guy but never bought one that I built.

    10 years later... thanks for the video from way back! I needed to see what the slide assembly looked like from the factory, at the very back, where the rear sight sits on a stamped steel piece which is held in place by a rivet. That stamped steel piece is what locks the barrel assembly to the alloy frame. On my example, the rivet is broken on the end that pokes up through the top, by the rear sight. I am sure the content creator will not see this but thank you anyway.

      Thank you. I did see it and I do believe Smith and Wesson has a lifetime warranty. If you contact them I'm sure they'll take care of you. I've had good luck with their customer service. I hope you can get it fixed.

    I recently purchased this model and it's amazingly accurate at 25 yds. Also, the takedown release button should be flush with the front of the frame when the button is fully extended, not pushed back slightly. I found that when mine does that I have to make sure the barrel is fully seated on the frame and it eventually will extend to the flush position.

    i bought this gun thursday. took it to the range today and loved it. I fired 100 cci stingers and only had 3 ftf. really accurate and a blast for a 22

    I used to machine the frames, slides, and barrels for the 22A. Nice little pistol. And simple. Now I am machining the S&W 1911 frame and slides.

    I have been searching to see the clip on this thing and you are the only person I could find who pulled out the magazine. This gun looks so weird, but I hear its a good beginner gun. Also even with you on mute (Listening to Sirius XM) you do a great job showing all the different parts. I learned a lot about it just from seeing it without the sound.

    First NEVER dry fire any 22 rim fire!! Use a snap cap. This is a S&W knock off of the legendary High Standard Victor. If you have feed or jamming issues take a close look at the mag. If the mag has been dropped it could load the rounds too high or low causing jams. Bending the mag lips could fix it just like the Victor. See if the mag needs to be oiled which is another feed problem. I clean and oil the mags for my Victor every time it's cleaned after being used and the feed issues are minimal. Also see if the manual prohibits using high velocity round which might damage the frame. Worst come to worse send it back to S&W they have an excellent service dept. GL

      Thanks, I just ordered a new .22 A-1 ($279) with target grips at 1/3 the price of a used Victor. I will add a Browning Medalist and Victor to my collection next year. (keep peace in the household - LOL) My Walther Gold Cup is plenty of fun if NOT match grade and shoots as well as I can see (nearing 70) LOL.

    I'm glad you liked the video. Prices on ammo vary from place to place, that's something you will have to find out yourself. The cheaper brands tend to be the 550ct. Federal ammo you get at Walmart. Remingtion, and Winchester also offer bulk packs. You have to find out what your gun likes. Every gun is an individual, and no 2 guns act the same way. Mine fed anything that I put in it. Some guns won't run with some brands of ammo. You will have to find out for yourself with some trial and error.

    I have one of these. The only issue I had out of the box was that the mag release button was sticky. I took the grips off and removed some of the plastic material that was in contact with the mag release button. It works great now. Another issue is fouling. When that happens, spent cases don’t eject well. A couple passes with a cleaning brush and re-lube. Some say that the plastic piece in the back of the recoil spring wears out over time. Mine is 6 years old and has thousands of rounds through it. No issues yet. I put a red dot on it recently and shoot it at 50 yards.

    Buy .22 snap caps. DO NOT DRY FIRE. Okay on newer rim fire .22’s. Purchased this exact gun 08/2010, $250.00 out the door. Great gun I only shoot CCI 1435 fps or higher ammo. Can’t speak to it’s reliability with cheaper slower ammo.

    Good video, can I suggest you may want to put in a text box about HOW not to bend that thin metal hook at the back of the barrel. I reran that part and noticed as you lifted the barrel up, you also shifted it back to disengage that piece so as not to get bent as you pivot it out of place.

    I have the same gun with 7.5 inch long barrel well over 1000 rounds punched through with no issues walmart federal and cheap remmington feed and fire flawlessly so long as the ammo is fresh old swollen rounds tend to jam on the feed ramp. The barrel is also interchangeable if you have a 3.5 and want a 7.5 buy the barrel no need for another gun its modular and easy as hell to mod and change parts to fit your particular requirements or style

    I own one and I personally hate my 22a1. It has a lot going for it but mine jams a lot (doesn't matter the ammo). It being a 22, I believe it shouldn't be so heavy. I love my Beretta 92 which I consider a heavy gun, but this 22a1... its top heavy, I prefer a good balance when I'm holding it (Walther P22 springs to mind wish I got that), this feels like I just want to point the barrel down. Plus I personally dislike the sites.

    • @g54023
      @g54023  7 років тому +2

      If the gun is having issues, I'd let S&W know. They have excellent customer service. The reason it's so heavy is because it's a target gun. To compare it to a Walther P22 is like comparing apples to oranges. It's a completely different style of gun. The 22a does have it's quirks, but it's far from a bad gun in my opinion. Thanks for sharing your views, and take care.

      I got mine used. A mis-fire seems to be a common prob. (online sites). Seems to "fire" & dents cartridge/jams - blame cartridges - diff. cart. - same prob. Sent it to S&W (thru same gun store) returned in 3 wks. perfect - no charge (of course). Great gun! I think it was wear affecting the firing pin alignment &/or striking force.

  • @g54023
    @g54023  11 років тому

    This gun WILL run all the bulk stuff. It eats it like candy. You only have to worry about the occasional misfire (Primer strike and no ignition) due to cheap ammo. That is a common problem with cheap .22LR ammo.

  • @ibmgrunt

    I bought mine new in 2006 for $192 out the door. Your nomenclature is incorrect. It's not a guide rod and spring but a RECOIL ROD, RECOIL SPRING, and RECOIL SPACER, not a BACK PLATE..

  • @ddgrego
    @ddgrego 11 років тому

    One thing on these pistols is do not dry fire it.if you look and the end of the barrel you will see indentions from the fireing pin and down the road it will cause problems with the ammo loading or being ejected as it tightens up the bore.You will have to use a chamber ironing tool to make the barrel round again and function properly. i have worked on a few of these where that was an issue with loading and ejecting.You can fire it if you it open just a little bit and it will fire without damage

    Just acquired one of these little beauties that was in rough shape. I had to clean the paint off the uppers and noticed that the guide rod back plate is missing as well as the little piece of metal on the back of the barrel/sight. Would have never known it was there if not for your video. Thanks. Now, where the heck do I get that piece of metal that locks the back part down to the lower? There appears to be no place to attach it. Or, was it brazed on or affixed by solder? Please let me know.

    • @g54023
      @g54023  4 роки тому

      It looks to be pinned in place from the bottom on mine. The rear sight will probably have to be removed and there is an indention underneath it that the metal hook sits in. My suggestion is to call S&W customer service and request the part. They have very good customer service and will more than likely help you in any way they can. They may request that you send it to them too. I believe that S&W has a lifetime warranty, but I'm not 100% sure of that. Good luck with it, and I'm glad my video helped. Stay safe!
