This is also really good because it makes the idea of playing a werewolf character practical for classes other than Blood Hunters, as well as a good way to roleplay a level 1 bloodhunter who's figuring out how to actually graduate into a full blown member of the Order of the Lycan.

instead of resistance or immunity to non-silver, you could also go the Troll regen route. If no silver damage was dealt, then they can't really die, only put down for a bit while their flesh and bones heal.
OR the curse hardens their bones so that only silver can cut through their bones, but regular weapons can still cut their flesh

Yeah that's what I did for my campaign, thanks for the advice I was able to create dangerous fodder with them. Used Wererats. Even at 39 hp (against a party of level 6s) they were able to harass the party really well, but not be OP.

You don't even need to mention trolls since the Loup Garou from Van Richten's already has the kind of mechanic your wrote up.
Regeneration: The Loup Garou regains 10 hit points at the start of each of its turns. If the Loup Garou takes damage from a silvered weapon, this trait doesn't function at the start of the Loup Garou's next turn. The Loup Garou only dies if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate.
This one can almost work as written, just nerf the regen a bit with a roll instead and it prevents you from dying from the normal death rolls against non silvered attacks, but you will still be knocked unconscious and it won't bring you back up. If everyone else dies your character is still fucked so will be eliminated as usual but lore wise they're technically still alive.

I have my own little spin on lycanthropes weaknesses.
I once read, that originally, werewolves were weak against mercury, not Silver, and only later it became Argentum.
So I planned to make it this way: lycanthropes seem to be at least resistant against anything not magic or silvered. But if they come into contact with either of these two metals, they take either fire (for silver) or acid (for mercury) damage, which can't be reduced in any way.
My reasoning behind these is, that silver and mercury severly counter the lycanthropes regeneration ability, so, from a storytelling standpoint, you could make, that wounds, that came into contact with either of the two metals, wouldn't heal as quick or as good, maybe leaving scars, where they would usually just close after some time.
Also, if one got just bitten and infected, maybe pressing a silver item on the wound could neutralize the infection, or at least slow it down a bit.

I would have two mastery paths to choose from. One to fight off the beast within making it easier to retain your form but when you do transform it’s weaker. Or to embrace the change and transform at will but some of the animal traits carry over to your human form making you recognizable as a lycan and maybe making it harder to interact socially.

My single best use of lycanthropy against my players. Gave them the quest to go and deal with a problem at a distant warehouse. They do more and more research, dropped a ton of hints but no one picked up.
Finally reached the warehouse. And all of a sudden, the house bellows loudly gets up on its foundation pillars and attacks.
    A were-house.
Fair to say, the players haven't trusted a single pronounciation I've made since then

You can also replace weapon immunity with a regeneration active effect. Every round, they gain 2d6 hp back. Damage from silver weapons ends this effect until the next round. This would make the werewolf a ambush slugger, kinda like their stat block suggests (high dex & str).
This way, werewolves feel strong, but not godly and they require teamwork to eliminate.
If a player is using the werewolf, I do a 3 tier system. I base moving up tiers on either kills or narrative time spent with the disease
Tier 1: DC 15 wisdom saving throw or user must attack the last enemy who damaged user or lowest HP target at DMs choice. User must flee if below 50% hp. Accidental damage from party will cause user to fight allies. No control over turning.
Tier 2: User can control turning. User may also choose either the lowest HP target or the closest target. If an enemy is killed, user may allow bloodlust status (no control over attacks until DC15 wisdom save) to regain 1d4 hp per turn for 1d4 rounds.
Tier 3: user has control over turning. User may attack targets freely and deals 1d4 extra damage to bloodied (below 50% HP) targets. Bloodlust now allows user to heal 2d6 per round for 1d4 turns.

I always felt like remove curse was such an oversight, I usually rule it as it has to be tailored specifically to the unique curse, they’re trying to cure, and attach a DC to it and make them make an ability check, I adjust the dc according to a few variables such as the casters level relative to the level of the caster who applied the curse if there was one involved, or their level of familiarity with the curse, etc.

My wizard is a were-owl and it's a good thing because he is a new player and his over excitement means he usually runs in first. I kind of like it because a lot of the time I want my players to kind of have a gage for how tough a monster is. The look on their faces when they saw how DEAD he would have been was priceless but it helped them take the fight seriously and it was a lot of fun

I have had some BAD luck trying to get DMs to let me play a Lycanthrope. They were always so concerned about the balance of mechanics even though I'm not one to try and break the game in any way. I'll say this, though. I love the idea you presented here for customizing Lycanthropes. Definitely moreso than the standard Lycanthrope template. Though, personally I would prefer going the Grim Hollow route. If I'm ever able to afford that PDF, I'll definitely try it out. Hopefully I get the chance one day.

I had a player who wanted to be a werebear, I told him he could be turned into a werewolf because they're less OP (werecoyote, actually, because we were doing a wild west thing).
Unfortunately it sort of spiraled and everybody became werecoyotes. They were all really into it, except one guy who wound up quitting for a while over it, even though I assured him he could get himself cured pretty quickly.

I like the idea of when trying to cure it, you have to fight the animal inside you. Perhaps a physical battle or a psionic plane battle. To cure yourself from Lycanthropy you must kill the beast within you. To activate the process I like the idea of incorporating the Wolf’s Bane Potion into it. Maybe a player must reach a deep meditative state, then given Wolf’s Bane Potion, on a full moon, you enter the psionic plane where you must fight your internal monster.

My Home-Brew Cure was a potion made from wolfsbane, 25 gp worth of silver dust, and a pint of blood from a Werewolf who has Mastered the Change... (the second two ingredients are based on the requirements for making Holy Water)
So not only did they need to find Wolfsbane, (the werewolves destroyed all of it in the area) but they also needed to capture a Werewolf, and drain it, while it was alive... and find a scholar who remembered this ancient recipe....
But my party also recently hit Level 9, and I'm letting Greater Restoration cure it pretty simply :-o

I get you man (love your content btw, defo gonna suggest a lot of your homebrew to my DM)
Lycanthropy derives from the Greek words "lykos" (wolf) and "anthropos" (man as in "human"), so translated it literally means "wolf-human"
Therianthropy on the other hand derives from the Greek word for "beast" which can be applied on a far broader scale.

Idea I had while watching: have the process to remove the lycanthropy be a basic check, but have steps that make the check easier by lowering the Save needed. The standard check is a Wisdom 20, followed by a Con 20, or the order can be reversed. Either way, there's damn near no way you're just going to say "I'm cured" and the curse magically goes away. However, fulfill certain prerequisites, and it may be very possible. Drink a certain potion; lower it by a certain amount. Get a blessing by some high level preist in a town, wrap them in silver chains, maybe even have a party member cast Remove Curse at a higher level, perhaps 4 - 5? All contribute to lowering the Save needed to succeed to something low. Hell, it'd be intresting if there were also a few outside factors which actually raised the check as well, like some unforseen thing occuring which makes curing it slightly more difficult.

Perhaps the only thing I'd add is that I'd have an out of control player deal more damage than an in control one.
Also I would allow for a player to lose control voluntarily, to give in to the inner beast, but then have an extra drawback,
perhaps disadvantage to regain control or lose 1 mastery lvl.

Nice video, I do some of the same with a weretiger at my table. We do resistance to damage and vulnerability to silver(he gets an allergic reaction touching silver as an added flare) and have a sort of invocation feature system for them where their abilities trigger off of spending your hit die to activate them. As for negatives. Each night the player faces a nightmare check, where they make a constitution saving throw to see if they can physically handle the pressure the beast has on them. On a failure they suffer penalties based on their class. the weretiger at my table is a wizard, so he recovers only half of his spent spell slots for that day when he fails his save. When a character fails their save they have to actually go out of their way to satisfy the beast. My system was since it was a tiger, it valued the hunt, so the wizard had to actually go out of his way to find a creature of a CR equal his level and hunt it to sate the beast. So far the wizard hasnt overshined anyone or appears any more overpowered but it works pretty good.

I kept the Immunity to Normal Weapons in my campaign (I gave them Wererats at level 2 with no magic weapons). We implemented two additional rules (one of them is actually standard RAW I believe):
    * Choking: Being immune to weapons doesn't mean 'doesn't need to breathe'. By grappling them, you can choke them out. You have to keep the grapple going for a number of rounds equal to their con modifier for them to go unconscious.
    * Weapon damage: If a lycanthrope is hit with a critical hit, the *extra* damage die deals damage as normal. Not the regular die or strength modifier.

I’m in a campaign right now and we’re level 11. I just got this curse through our Halloween special. I’m working towards that weapon immunity because my DM like to use cool weapons. So most npcs have +1 weapons at least which count as magical.

Idea for players in someone's campaign: kid and teddy bear.
    Details:
A young kid in training to be a cleric is stranded and orphaned. He is then adopted by a kind but feirce Bar- Bear-ian nomad. The Barbarian has mastered his were bear transformations because he developed discipline by controlling his inner rage and through the wisdom of the teachings of the Storm Lord. The traumatized child goes everywhere with his giant buddy and has the barbarian help him work through his issues as he grows.
    Example of encounter:
    7 y.o. Cleric:
Teddy, there are bad people here!
    Totem master/ berserker:
By Storm Lord's decree, I will weave your own hair into rope to hang you from an ash tree branch. * proceeds to rage then shifts into a Kodiak bear and brandishes axe*.
Enemy bandits: ..... NOPE. * runs away*
    Bar-bear-ian:
See. Standing up to bullies makes them go away. Be brave.
    7 y.o. cleric:
Got it! Cant let the bullies win!

There is a book released by Ghostfire Gaming called Grim Hollow that deals with transformations too. I have been enjoying the rules they have for all the transformations. Was kind of the selling point for me on the book. As for how they do it, they got the corruption of the curse increase by a level table and basically the curse levels up as the character does. They become more powerful gradually, but they also start gaining plenty of negatives as it continues.

I personally do not have an issue with remove curse, for the fact that not EVERY local priest is a 5th level character, so a small town in the middle of nowhere will not have an easy out of lycanthropy. Its easy for PC because they are EXEPTIONAL examples. But if i were to make it harder for the curse to be broken, then i would say the target has to be willing, if not they get a save to resist the spell, then the spell caster has to make a check to remove the curse and finaly, the spellcaster does not need to make a check vs the curse if its before the target first full moon.

Yeah I've always felt like Werewolves (in 5E at least. Not sure about the other editions) had the same problem that Skyrim had were they kinda end up being a nerf to your character despite it being a "behold my final form" moment. (Apart from the immunity to mundane weapons which also means werewolves can't hurt each other)
Like level 1 characters can often have a higher strength stat than the werewolf form.
Definitely some nice ideas you brought up here so I'm going looking forward to implementing some variations of them in my campaign.

i remove the immunity and give them resistance to slashing, piecing and bludgeoning to non-silvered weapons magical or otherwise. and then give them a regeneration of 15 hit points, that is turned off by fire and radiant damage or damage from silvered weapons.

Van Richten book had some tougher rules from getting it from a stronger version of a Werewolf or etc.
I like either removing or increasing the spell level of "Remove Curse" if Werewolf is the main focus of a campaign or section of a game.
Shifters should get advantage on those saves since they are used to shifting already. Would be a fun flavorful choice.

What about differences in races, changing into not just a humanoid werewolf,
For example, a Thri kreen, four arms, toxic bite, colour shifting protective carapace,
Werewolf form, would have four arms, a shell that grows fur underneath, and a toxic bite,
    Or even a hadozee werewolf,
    Can climb can glide
All this to be able to cause werewolves to be much more terrifying

Here's a idea for the resistance to normal weapons. Give them resistance instead of immunity, but also make it impossible to kill them with normal weapons. They can drop to 0 hit points, but can't be killed by them. That, I think, would be good enough to make it feel identical to were-wolf lore.

I agree that physical immunity is rather nonsensical for werewolves, or anything that is mainly composed of flesh & blood (even in a magical setting); without it being explained (super high tensile muscle fibers, natural armor, thick skin, magic barrier(s), aura(s), blessing(s), etc.). Doesn't need to make pedantically scientific sense. It just needs to maintain verisimilitude.
Game-wise, in-place of immunity, I'd have it so that a werewolf (in monster form) would have physical resistance and be unkillable (but still able to be incapacitated or knocked out from dropping to 0 HP) to non-silver weapons.

  • @davidmccall4024

I think remove curse should only work before the first transformation (more the idea is the option has a short window for it to work before you have to go and find a way to cure it, so maybe one minute aka 10 rounds).

  • @YourBoyNobody530

When it comes to lycanthropy, and vampirism I tend to try to keep the rules as simple as possible to avoid overcomplication. I do sometimes add a progression system based on several factors, but I typically avoid that as it can be to much to handle.

    • @YourBoyNobody530
      @YourBoyNobody530 2 роки тому

So, what I typically do for lycanthrope transformations is I have a base which every lycanthrope gets, and then I add additional traits to that base to diversify. For example a weretiger gets access to a pounce ability, and a were boar would get access to a charge ability. I also allow the use of melee and ranged weapons in hybrid form since werebears. and weretigers both use weapons in their hybrid forms.

I bought some books containing the Lythari to try and build a ranger around them and their control over their lycanthropy which I found one of the coolest they remind me of snow leopards or suicune from Pokémon with their rarity and sightings in the wild and how people don’t know what they are when seen so they are largely misunderstood as just evil lycans and hunted out of fear. I also think of them as being closer to Corellon in the mutability of his form given their ability to transform at will into a wolf form. Then I imagine that they don’t like other elf races for those reasons especially drow. I can’t wait for those books to come in so I can stop speculating on how to build them and just do it.

Got a question @The_Dungeon_Coach ... Wouldn't it be cool if the afflicted player could try to get some sort of item they could carry with them (and eventually would need to atune to) that gives them some sort of Bonus for dealing with thier affliction? e.g. wearing a necklace with a talisman made of silver, which resembles the creature they transform into (e.g. a werefox would need to wear a silver-fox-nacklace) which makes it easier for them to stay in controll once they actually managed to gain controll (while they are not in controll they roll against DC 15 to GAIN controll, but once they are in controll they only roll against DC 10 to STAY in controll)... or a silver collar that makes it easier for them to GAIN controll (reduces the DC by 2)... or carrying a vial with wolfsbane-essence on a string, either as a necklace, or bound around thier wrist, the smell of which helps them resist transformation (DC 10 instead of 15 for fighting off the transformation)... How about clothes made out of wolfsbane fiber or fine silver, giving them advantage on all their saves related to their lycanthopy AT THE DRAWBACK of suffering maby 2d4 additional (for silver either radiant or toxin & for wolfsbane fiber either necrotic or toxin) dmg each time they get hit because their silver or wolfsbane clothes are being cut or torn and bits of it are now getting into the wound! Such item interactions would be amazing and open up so many options for sidequesting, not just for those who want to cure theit affliction but also for those who want to controll and use it! plz let me know what u think :D

    1. 1/2 day passes; tuffs of hair are visible on your ears
    2. 2 days passed; gain advantage on perception check through sense of smell
    3. 2 1/2 days passed; more angrier than usual
    4. 4 days passed; a little more hairier than usual.
    5. 5 days passed; you smell like a dog and your nails and teeth are sharper
    6. 6 days passed; grow a tail
    7. Full moon

Maybe something that could be done is the players start out with non-silvered weapon Resistance X as per your pathfinder video, and it can gradually ramp up every level maybe until they hit like 20 or something, giving them effective immunity against it.

So is it possible for my shadow sorcerer become a werewolf?
    Back story:
My ancestors were cursed by 3 witches for trespassing into the shadowfell after they were being warned. Not only they were cursed, but also was absorbed by the shadowfell magic by accident. And now ever since then, my ancestors were able to transform or shape-shift into a werewolves, who can not only hunt and learn the ways of the wolf, but they were able to practice magics…shadow magic.
I was born as a Shadow sorcerer and have the blessing of the werewolf blood inside of me. As a child I was able to control basic shadow magic by my master. No one can teach me how to control my werewolf form, but still I am willing to learn and not give up….I will master it! I can tell the more I transform the easier for me to control. As I get older (mid teen) my elders gave me an advice. They said that I should go on the adventure and join the guild…eventually I will be able to master the beast inside of me, plus I get to learn or develop new magic on the way. That how my ancestors were able to master there sorcery and were able to transform into a werewolf at will. That how they mastered and control the beast inside of them.
For that I will follow their footsteps, I will learn new magic, and I will control the beast inside of me! ROAR!!!
So far that what I got…u guys think that acceptable? I hope so 🧐
