This was written between the guitarist Jane Weidlin and British singer Terry Hall of the Specials, they were having an affair and it wasn't very secretive, he wrote her a letter and some of the lyrics were included. They then created a song out of it. Not only did The Go Gos then record it but so did Terry Halls band Fun Boy Three(they sound a little different) but both bands had a hit with their version at the same time.
I absolutely *love* the Fun Boy Three version. It's darker and more downbeat than the Go-Gos (which I also like, just not as much), and Terry Hall's lugubrious voice gives the song a very different feel.
True story, I was a cashier in SoCal [1997] in a State wide Home Improvement store. Jane Wiedlin (Bassist for The Go-Gos) came through my line, twice, both in the same day. I knew who she was, she knew I knew who she was. I didn't say a word or draw any attention to her. I treated her with the same respect as all are other customers. That's why she came through my line the 2nd time. That 2nd time, she made deliberate eye contact with me, with soft appreciative eyes. She never once carried herself in such a manner that a lot of celebrities do. Oh, The Go-Gos hail from Newbury Park, Ventura County, Ca. My neck of the woods.
I was 11 when this song made the Top 40 and I immediately loved it. Still do! To me, especially the video, it’s a reflection of the quintessential, happy-go-lucky, free-spirited vibe of the early ‘80’s in SoCal. Even though I grew up in Houston, Texas, I always wanted to live my teen years in SoCal.
The early 80's were the Saturday morning on the modern era. Bright, sunny, innocent but action packed and lots of cartoon colors. The best part about the music was that it still required real singing and playing, so even the pop stuff had soul and staying power. The drums had swing and bounce, the guitars and vocals had humanity in them. Every track a one of a kind slice of goodness committed to tape and transferred to vinyl. Think I'll go back for another listen.
Brad & Lex, you'll love their "We Got the Beat", "Vacation" and "Head Over Heels"!!! From Belinda Carlisle's solo career(the lead singer), you'll love her "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" and "Mad About You"!!
I remember when I first saw the Mad About You video. Belinda had dropped a few pounds, dyed her hair red and was giving me serious Ann-Margaret vibes.👍👍
My sister used to play the Go Go's a lot in 1983 and 84. She had their Vacation album hanging on her wall with the picture of all of them water skiing. I am from Southern California. At that time they were local hero's. They used to be hard core punk rock when they first started. I really like them. Reminds me of like surfer music.
2:00 this song is actually co-written by Terry Hall (singer of the ska band the Specials) and Jane Wiedlin (guitarist of the Go-Go’s) who had an affair when the bands toured together, which was the inspiration of the song - but to Brad’s girl gang comment - the Go-Gos were kinda notorious for partying and hooking up with just as many fans/groupies as the guy bands did.
The Go-Go's are still plugging along after their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They recently played a group of sets with Clem Burke (legendary drummer from Blondie) on the skins while their drummer healed after an injury. Belinda Carlisle is 63 and still looks phenomenal ♡
I saw the Go-Go's back in the late seventies at my local skatepark in Southern California. They were somewhat popular in Southern California at the time, and just starting to make it big.
Wasn't it Rodney ("Rodney on the ROQ") who first played their records? Back when the DJs could play any new music, B-side, album track they happened to like.
Co-written by Terry Hall of The Specials/Fun Boy Three. The Specials were one of the better ska bands and Fun Boy Three was a very interesting more musically varied offshoot composed of the three front men for The Specials. Both well worth checking out. Fun Boy Three did a version of this, but they have more interesting song to try.
Pretty girls. Southern California girl, pop punk, surf punk, new wave band that was huge during the '80s, even made some during the '90s. . Yall need to see more of the videos. "We Got the Beat", "Vacation", "Head over Heals". "Beatnik Beach", "The Whole World lost its Head". Also many of their early stuff is very punk rock (late '70s, early '80s), check those out, too. They grew out of the LA , California punk scene. They all ended up having good solo careers as well.
Co-written by Jane Wiedlin, guitarist of the Go-Go's, and Terry Hall, singer of the Specials and Fun Boy Three. In 1983, Fun Boy Three released their version reaching Number 7 in the UK Chart. This version by The Go-Go's only got to Number 47 just over a year earlier.
In the US, Fun Boy Three never charted on the Hot 100. With this, or any song they performed. A little surprising, since ‘82-‘83 was the second British Invasion, with Duran Duran, Human League, Culture Club, etc.

I always thought the message of the song was "These other people are making up false stories about us, which really aren't worth responding to - so our lips are sealed".
Love the 1960 Buick convertible in the video. This was classic 1980s gold. This retro-sounding girl group thing enjoyed a brief reign of popularity in the 1980s. Great, catchy song.
This song was The Go-Go's debut song to hit the Billboard Top 40 chart. The song peaked at the #20 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the late summer of 1981. Last fall, The Go-Go's got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I'm so of these ladies getting inducted last year. Yes!!!

The Go Go’s were such a fun cool all girl rock band. I saw them in concert and it was great such a fun band with a good vibe. I love watching Lex she has such a genuine and wonderful positive vibe about her. Your videos are great.

They went into the fountain hoping to get arrested, but were disappointed when it didn’t happen. :) They were troublemakers and we’ll known to party hard. One of them actually got kicked out of Ozzy’s dressing room for partying too hard.
Grew up with them. I hear this song and it takes me right back. My friends, the fun, the girls, school... all of it.. Just a fun song during such fun times
I listen mostly to groups like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Alter Bridge. That's my favorite kind of music. Oh yeah...and I've always loved this too! 😊
Ha :) We were into bands like Suicidal Tendencies, Ill Repute and T.S.O.L back then but it was always perfectly acceptable to drop in a Go-Go's cassette. Good times!
Heard the all female Japanese hard rock and metal bands like Band-Maid, Nemophila, and Lovebites? Most of the best music is out of Japan now. Nemophila is like a cross between the Go-Go's and Iron Maiden, but with twice the talent.
I always put my two cents in, the Go-Go's were slightly before me. My baby sitters listening to this. That's probably why I remember this in the time. This wasn't played in my house, because all that was played was country and rock. But, since, they were good. I can rock this. Also, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" movie, probably launched the "Go-Go's" into the stratosphere.
This is a song written by the GoGos guitarist and also the lead singer of the specials, about their relationship. So there are two original versions and they are different. The Specials version is a lot more serious and strikes a very different tone

Well, he did co-write the song together with Jane Wiedlin the rhythm guitarist and backup singer of the Go-Go’s. Her solo acoustic version is pretty good too, as is a lot of her later material.
Check out the original version by 'Fun Boy Three'...The guitarist from this band was dating one of the Go Gos and gave them the song to record themselves. Fun Boy Three were originally the Ska band The Specials..they are also worth a look... Belinda Carlisle the singer from the GoGos had great solo hits herself...
3:33 If you immediately started hearing the next song on the album, "How Much More", at the end of this song, then you listened to Beauty and The Beat too many times when you were young like I did. That album is burnt into my brain.

Jane also had a pretty successful solo career. Her videos for Blue Kiss and Rush Hour are worth checking out. Also, though criminally underviewed on UA-cam, Charlotte’s band The Graces have a couple of songs Lay Down Your Arms and Perfect View that I think are really great.
One of the many all girl / girl lead groups of the 80's. More in that decade than any other before or since. The Pretenders, Missing Persons, The Motels, Madonna, Joan Jett and many more.
The guitarist had a secret romance with a man from another group who had a girlfriend. When The GoGo's came back to the States, he sent her the lyrics to this song, she liked them. She finished them & said it was about their time together. They would never talk about it, so their lips were sealed.
You guys are a awesome couple keep doing what you're doing stay close and have fun it's not often you see two people enjoying each other's company and having fun doing what you're doing
Forty years later, I think they're still the only all-female rock band to have a number 1 Billboard album. Not sure what that says about the music industry. Sure, there's been other all-girl groups with number 1 albums (The Supremes, TLC, Spice Girls, Destiny's Child) but I can't remember any other all girl rock groups.
Yeah, when the Go-Go's hit... they did their part in fueling the 80's happy fun time... Frank Zappa "Valley Girl" is a song to hear for a part of the 80's understanding.
The 80's..I grew up in Huntington Beach,Ca. This video really illustrates the good times back then.

This band had groupies all over the country they ROCKED .
Brad's got it.
I'm a Bloke, Australian Bloke and loved this song especially the Bass with the sweet harmonies as a teenage Punk. Had a Pop vibe but Punk ethos.
One of the great pop bass lines. Makes the song.
Brad looks tortured, Lex is having a ball. These two are so much fun.
Yeah, when the Go-Go's hit... they did their part in fueling the 80's happy fun time... Frank Zappa "Valley Girl" is a song to hear for a part of the 80's understanding.
It would be AWESOME if they listened to Valley Girl.
Really fun and talented band in simpler times ! I remember well!
I still love to Rock out with The GOs GOs!! They're one fun, Rockin' band! And I always had a crush on their Bass player, Kathy Valentine. 💕😁
