Ballistic Gel has been waaaay misunderstood by the public. As a firearms instructor, let me explain. Ballistic Gel is calibrated to the average density and water content of the human body. It isn't used to measure things like penetration, as you too often see. What Ballistic Gel is actually used for, is measuring something called "Cavitation". This is what happens when the force of a projectile imparts its energy and pushes the medium away. It creates a "Cavity", a large opening. The damage done by a bullet has nothing to do with penetration, because most often the cleanest, deepest shots like through-through shots do the least damage. (Ever see in a movie, "You got lucky, it's a through shot. There's an exit wound.") Well, that became a medical trope because of Cavitation (a bit because of infection too). A bullet with high penetration, going straight through you, means that only a portion of the energy was transmitted to you and the rest kept going. The most lethal shots are when the bullet doesn't go through and transfers ALL of its energy into your body, creating a massive cavity and sending a shockwave through your body's soft tissues doing damage to soft organs that the bullet didn't even hit. A bullet that's a "near miss" like the movies can still rupture lungs, bruise the heart, tear the liver... etc. Watch any ballistic gel video in SloMo and you'll see as the bullet goes through, behind it, the gel (and flesh) will blast open, creating a massive hole, and then just and quickly slam back shut creating secondary shockwaves through the gel. It's like standing next to a bomb, those shockwaves tearing through your body are what do the real damage. Imagine you had a hole the size of a small melon in your gut... when you get shot, for a split second... you actually do! This is what Ballistic Gel is actually measuring, it's meant to be viewed in SloMo or a single frame to look at the size of the cavity created to understand the energy transmission into the target. Edit: Also, one thing I left out about why they aren't used for penetration testing.. is pretty obvious. SKIN. Skin is very hard to penetrate, it makes a huge difference, and on top of that human flesh isn't all one smooth consistency. We have leathery tough skin, gel like soft fat, hard and fibrous muscle and dense wood like bones. Gel is a terrible analog for actual human flesh. It only mimics the general density and way that flesh "wobbles" and reacts to a shockwave or pressure change. You can push your finger easily into Ballistic Gel.. you can't just push your finger through someone's skin. (Don't be crude :[ I worded that carefully! lol) I hope this was helpful, and now you know what to look for whenever you see Gel shot footage. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask. If you want to nitpick, just understand I tried to make this easy to understand and I know I left stuff out. I'm more than willing to discuss!

@@Jempai I doubt it. Slingshot is just not that hard. It's super fun though and once you know how to hold it, you improve very quickly. Highly reccomended for a hobby. I dont reccomend getting his slingshot though. Tube bands are less efficient, especially with small ammo. He has an unnecessarily heavy draw weight for that ammo. Tripple tube bands is just a gimmick to make people think its powerful. You are far better off with flat band slingshots because you can go as thin or as thick as you want in the bands. Plus you can even stack multiple bands to test ultraheavy ammo. The slingshot he uses is 20 bucks on amazon. You can get a nicer slingshot for less than that on amazon or from simpleshot or even alibaba. Believe it or not, heavier slingshot bands do not shoot faster. They actually shoot slower, UNLESS you are using very heavy ammo. Heavy bands move more slowly than thin light bands. So unless you need them for heavy ammo, they are actually slowing your shots down. For example, a bb shoots best from a 6lb draw weight band, but a 1/2inch steel ball shoots best from around 20lb draw weight band. With giant 20mm lead balls youd want to increase this to about 70lbs. This guys slingshot will shoot 1/2 inch steel balls pretty well, but not as well as a flat band slingshot with 1mm thick bands and proper taper. Thats the thing about flat band slingshots. We can taper our bands for more power at the same draw weight, tube slingshots can not do this. They are also harder to learn to be accurate with, especially since he has 3 unstacked bands. I can reccomend plenty of youtube channels for slingshots and plenty of great slingshots for less than 20 dollars if anyone is interested. Building your own slingshot is also fun. If i was this guy id have researched slingshots more before I bought that cheapy, pot metal, amazon slingshot. You can get one made from 1 solid piece of steel for like 6 bucks. I personally wouldnt trust his slingshot not to break in my face. Its not a nice slingshot. Ive seen his slingshot on alibaba for like 3 bucks only to be resold on amazon for 20+.
Do it! I shot archery for several years when I was younger in a league with my mom and it was fantastic fun. Even went to a couple outdoor shooting tournaments where you'd basically go for a walk through the woods, stopping at designated spots along the path and shooting targets littered throughout the trees. And honestly the archery community was one of the friendliest and most welcoming sporting communities I've ever been a part of.
I love your videos and they have inspired me to learn whatever I can like cubing, violin, keyboard, guitar, saxophone, juggling and FINALLY completing mega man 2. That said, you should try speed stacking!
IDEA: Have your wife (or girlfriend idk) do "Learn How to Make a UA-cam Video", with her learning to film, edit, write, post, etc. (cuz you already know how to do one)
Alot of people (including myself) actually use slingshots for hunting game. They are deadly at the right distances and are so fun to hunt with. We normally use flat bands tho as they are generally more accurate. If you look up gamekeeper john he is a master slingshot hunter and has amazing accuracy, I've seen hit a swinging steel ammo with the same size ammo. I myself would consider myself an intermediate shooter, I can land headshots on pigeons 3 out of 5 shots most of the time, and I can get body shots 99 percent of the time. Great to see people getting out with the catapults and shooting

I found a large round magnet when I was about Ten and accidently found it would pull the steel ball bearings I was shooting to it which saved me a 'lot' of money, 66 years ago, LOL So I attached it to a section of an old fishing pole so I could save the bearings on the ground around my target. I've always managed to get my bearings from auto shops, etc since they are always throwing away used wheel bearings. And if you go to Harbor Freight, Lowe's, or Home Depot, etc. they sell a large 3" diameter magnet which can be mounted onto wooden pole with a screw. A bag of marbles is very economical and are fairly accurate out to 15 yards BTW. Hope this information helps someone, because shooting a Slingshot is still a lot of fun, even after all these years and if necessary can put food on the table - from critters to fish.
spinakker of course, I hate litter too, but the stuff he's shooting isn't pollution and is much much less harmful than plastic and trash. I'm willing to bet he cleaned the glass pieces anyways :)
...... Love watching you challenge yourself to learn.... Its intriguing. I learnt to juggle as my daughter wanted me to do it for her birthday ... I haven't changed myself since..... I now feel its time to do it again, thank you
Panda Militia i think most people haven’t played any throwing sports, hence they’re confused when people have a general sense of where balls go when thrown
I had mine from age 11 until.... oooh.... well I'm 39 now and I still have it :D Never went out without it as a kid. I think I'm reasonably well-adjusted, so I think your dad was out of order personally! ;) The shots at the bricks & balloons made me wince though...exactly the sort of surface that will send a ricochet right back at you :) Steel balls bounce VERY well off hard surfaces.
I've also decided to switch to the slingshot. I'm normally an archer, but with everything going mad these days, I thought if I needed to survive, a slingshot would bare better than a bow. I'm just skimming through videos to grab some knowledge to support my change of weapon. Going well so far. I slung a grape for curiosity and fun, and it exploded! 🤣🤣🤣 I'm still a bowman, or an archer, and that has helped my accuracy. Thank you for making this video.
Your comment definitely RESONATED with me! I myself have been planning on learning slingshot. I’d like to try archery too, but with ongoing global situation, having a tool to protect yourself is so vital. Good luck on you slingshot journey.
For your target, if you make the wood part a deep box, that is just a wood frame except the back plate, then staple the cardboard to the front and sides, you not only eliminate the bounce back, you also make a trap that allows you to reuse your ammo. your shot will go through the first sheet of cardboard, hit the solid wood and then stay contained.
Good job. For the novice, start close, like 15'; use the big card board and 6" circle. Find that spot/hold to pull your pouch to. Hold the pouch hand very still during the release of the ball.
i learned to shoot my slingshot using point shooting exclusively, and i can hit a pop can pretty easily at around 20 feet. i keep both eyes open, and i pull the pouch back like a bow. you can pull WAY farther when you pull across your chest like you are holding a bow, and it lets you shoot way, way further if you want. also i never hold my slingshot sideways. my point is, you don't "have to" shoot your sling shot in any particular way. it is very much an instinct shooting thing, and it really doesn't matter what you are doing so long as you are hitting your target consistently
brought back some great memories I had with my dad as a kid. he could hit anything from anywhere with a homemade slingshot and some random pebbles, none of this fancy stuff. blew my mind! he would also have been quite upset that you did not empty them beer bottles first... I love your content bro!

this channel is such a inspiration for people and their lives. Well done Mike and keep up the good work!
8:20 you know he’s confident in his aim when he’s got a really expensive camera in the shooting zone.
There's probably a clear pane of plastic or ballistics glass in front of the camera.

Just a huge Mike Boyd fan in the comments passing by. :)
herrreinsch hi
Looks like fun! I want to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow
That's a good idea :)
Its a lot like how he described shooting the sling shot make sure you always pull back to the same point on your face
Do it! Recurve is so fun
Witch bow? Medieval types of bows, recurve bows, compound bows

lovely video as always Mike ! but breaking glass on a beach where someone can walk by bare foots its not the greatest idea...
Cypekjam he said he was at an abandoned quarry
(Edit) never mind
I love your videos and they have inspired me to learn whatever I can like cubing, violin, keyboard, guitar, saxophone, juggling and FINALLY completing mega man 2. That said, you should try speed stacking!
IDEA: Have your wife (or girlfriend idk) do "Learn How to Make a UA-cam Video", with her learning to film, edit, write, post, etc. (cuz you already know how to do one)
I love how your wife was happy for you. Very supportive
This shows that you can learn everything by just giving it time. Thanks for the motivation

Next dude perfect?
Dude you can't learn to slingshot without doing a collab with joerg sprave
Wow the new dude perfect video looks great!

I found a large round magnet when I was about Ten and accidently found it would pull the steel ball bearings I was shooting to it which saved me a 'lot' of money, 66 years ago, LOL
So I attached it to a section of an old fishing pole so I could save the bearings on the ground around my target.
I've always managed to get my bearings from auto shops, etc
since they are always throwing away used wheel bearings.
I just hope you cleaned up that mess after
(Maybe not the 1500 ball bearings)
I am picturing the frustration of some detectorist in the future finding all those balls. "bloody hell, not another one"
Turelus just imagine a person or a dog walking there, when a glass shard stucks in their foot
If you watched the previous video, this was done in a quarry where people probably don't wander around
CitriReg it's still not nice to leave your shit around
spinakker of course, I hate litter too, but the stuff he's shooting isn't pollution and is much much less harmful than plastic and trash. I'm willing to bet he cleaned the glass pieces anyways :)
Do pen spinning next
i'd like to see that but it takes like a couple days at most

Good challenge but a hard one
this would be great

Learn to beatbox!
Mike learn to do a zen rollover with a butterfly knife. It’s called a wrist pass
Learn to liproll, it’s a beatbox noise
yeah, thats really hard ^
How about inward vocalised bass? It's much harder than lip rolls.
how about an inward outward wig biglebam its much harder
The trick is not to aim like you have sights just use your instincts and try judge your shot like when you throw something...trust
lil Joey that’s exactly what aiming is..
mate what he is saying is mark uses the spike to aim, remember at 4:50, joey is saying use instinctual aim, just knowing where the shot goes
Ivanne Ortiz how do you aim a throw bud?
Jeremy Tan aim then throw...
its just mind blowing
Panda Militia i think most people haven’t played any throwing sports, hence they’re confused when people have a general sense of where balls go when thrown
I had mine from age 11 until.... oooh.... well I'm 39 now and I still have it :D Never went out without it as a kid. I think I'm reasonably well-adjusted, so I think your dad was out of order personally! ;) The shots at the bricks & balloons made me wince though...exactly the sort of surface that will send a ricochet right back at you :) Steel balls bounce VERY well off hard surfaces.
This guy gonna survive the zombie apocalypse easily
Should have gotten 1 from joerg spraeve. Would have got it accomplished in no time. Could have been a great colaboration.
Nate S. I really hoped that would happen
He stole Joerg's shooting tutorial and he's trying to pass it off as his own.
That could be a sequel.
Mike’s trying to break bottles and he’d need Joerg’s slingshots if he was trying to break car doors
Learn knife throwing! Seems harder than axe throwing 🤔
SnapTouch what type of knife throwing the type where you spin the knife or the type where you don't spin the knife?
you know who I think both would be good, maybe trying the easier one and then the harder one :)
Good luck on you slingshot journey.
you are better off going with archery, because if SHTF then how will you find new latex bands for your slingshot? XD
What if he hit the camera
jon bang it has a protective lens lol
Yeah lol
Then he probably needs to buy a new camera😂

For your target, if you make the wood part a deep box, that is just a wood frame except the back plate, then staple the cardboard to the front and sides, you not only eliminate the bounce back, you also make a trap that allows you to reuse your ammo. your shot will go through the first sheet of cardboard, hit the solid wood and then stay contained.
His mrs is always so supportive. I wish mine gave that much of a shit about anything i did 😂😂
"This week I learned how to spray paint."
Perfect......
This channel is amazing!
Good job. For the novice, start close, like 15'; use the big card board and 6" circle. Find that spot/hold to pull your pouch to. Hold the pouch hand very still during the release of the ball.
Am i the only one who laughed when the cardboard flew away?
You truly deserve so many more subscribers. You put so much work into your videos. I am so glad you came up in my recommend!!!😀😀😀
Woulda been really clever had you gotten training from Joerg Sprave :p
i learned to shoot my slingshot using point shooting exclusively, and i can hit a pop can pretty easily at around 20 feet. i keep both eyes open, and i pull the pouch back like a bow. you can pull WAY farther when you pull across your chest like you are holding a bow, and it lets you shoot way, way further if you want. also i never hold my slingshot sideways. my point is, you don't "have to" shoot your sling shot in any particular way. it is very much an instinct shooting thing, and it really doesn't matter what you are doing so long as you are hitting your target consistently
Great stuff Mike! Your supposed to empty the bottles first ( wink wink )
+Jachin Bateman After many attempts with a single bottle.

How do you collect the ammo? Or do you leave it in the wilde?
Eric Andresen when we did it we used a big magnet on a string
when you are learning using a shorter distance and slowly move out, also place a steel bucket behind and reuse the steel balls

by "empty" you mean drink lol
