Ballistic Gel has been waaaay misunderstood by the public. As a firearms instructor, let me explain.
Ballistic Gel is calibrated to the average density and water content of the human body. It isn't used to measure things like penetration, as you too often see.
What Ballistic Gel is actually used for, is measuring something called "Cavitation". This is what happens when the force of a projectile imparts its energy and pushes the medium away. It creates a "Cavity", a large opening. The damage done by a bullet has nothing to do with penetration, because most often the cleanest, deepest shots like through-through shots do the least damage. (Ever see in a movie, "You got lucky, it's a through shot. There's an exit wound.") Well, that became a medical trope because of Cavitation (a bit because of infection too).
A bullet with high penetration, going straight through you, means that only a portion of the energy was transmitted to you and the rest kept going. The most lethal shots are when the bullet doesn't go through and transfers ALL of its energy into your body, creating a massive cavity and sending a shockwave through your body's soft tissues doing damage to soft organs that the bullet didn't even hit. A bullet that's a "near miss" like the movies can still rupture lungs, bruise the heart, tear the liver... etc.
Watch any ballistic gel video in SloMo and you'll see as the bullet goes through, behind it, the gel (and flesh) will blast open, creating a massive hole, and then just and quickly slam back shut creating secondary shockwaves through the gel. It's like standing next to a bomb, those shockwaves tearing through your body are what do the real damage. Imagine you had a hole the size of a small melon in your gut... when you get shot, for a split second... you actually do!
This is what Ballistic Gel is actually measuring, it's meant to be viewed in SloMo or a single frame to look at the size of the cavity created to understand the energy transmission into the target.
Edit: Also, one thing I left out about why they aren't used for penetration testing.. is pretty obvious. SKIN. Skin is very hard to penetrate, it makes a huge difference, and on top of that human flesh isn't all one smooth consistency. We have leathery tough skin, gel like soft fat, hard and fibrous muscle and dense wood like bones. Gel is a terrible analog for actual human flesh. It only mimics the general density and way that flesh "wobbles" and reacts to a shockwave or pressure change. You can push your finger easily into Ballistic Gel.. you can't just push your finger through someone's skin. (Don't be crude :[ I worded that carefully! lol)
I hope this was helpful, and now you know what to look for whenever you see Gel shot footage.
If anyone has questions, feel free to ask. If you want to nitpick, just understand I tried to make this easy to understand and I know I left stuff out. I'm more than willing to discuss!

@@Eric-qo9st Like two minutes... I'm not lazy. Also, I teach because I enjoy teaching. If a few people learn something new, then it's two minutes well spent.
The real question is why you shortened an already short, three letter word; "y-o-u", to a single letter. That's kind of crazy! Lol Go ahead and do you...
Maybe I just have a bit more patience than most?

@@DanteYewToob So that gel has consistent density throughout but the human body consists of organs, muscle tissues, bones and stuff with different density. Do correct me if I'm wrong. I'm just processing everything you said. Thanks for the explanation.

Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute
      Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air
In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'
I begged and pleaded with her day after day
But she packed my suit case and sent me on my way
She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket.
I put my Walkman on and said, 'I might as well kick it'.
First class, yo this is bad
Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass.
Is this what the people of Bel-Air living like?
      Hmm this might be alright.
But wait I hear they're prissy, bourgeois, all that
Is this the type of place that they just send this cool cat?
      I don't think so
I'll see when I get there
I hope they're prepared for the prince of Bel-Air
Well, the plane landed and when I came out
There was a dude who looked like a cop standing there with my name out
I ain't trying to get arrested yet
      I just got here
I sprang with the quickness like lightning, disappeared
I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I could say that this cab was rare
But I thought 'Nah, forget it' - 'Yo, homes to Bel Air'
I pulled up to the house about seven or eigth
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
      I looked at my kingdom
      I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air

@@Jempai I doubt it. Slingshot is just not that hard. It's super fun though and once you know how to hold it, you improve very quickly. Highly reccomended for a hobby. I dont reccomend getting his slingshot though. Tube bands are less efficient, especially with small ammo. He has an unnecessarily heavy draw weight for that ammo. Tripple tube bands is just a gimmick to make people think its powerful. You are far better off with flat band slingshots because you can go as thin or as thick as you want in the bands. Plus you can even stack multiple bands to test ultraheavy ammo. The slingshot he uses is 20 bucks on amazon. You can get a nicer slingshot for less than that on amazon or from simpleshot or even alibaba. Believe it or not, heavier slingshot bands do not shoot faster. They actually shoot slower, UNLESS you are using very heavy ammo. Heavy bands move more slowly than thin light bands. So unless you need them for heavy ammo, they are actually slowing your shots down. For example, a bb shoots best from a 6lb draw weight band, but a 1/2inch steel ball shoots best from around 20lb draw weight band. With giant 20mm lead balls youd want to increase this to about 70lbs. This guys slingshot will shoot 1/2 inch steel balls pretty well, but not as well as a flat band slingshot with 1mm thick bands and proper taper. Thats the thing about flat band slingshots. We can taper our bands for more power at the same draw weight, tube slingshots can not do this. They are also harder to learn to be accurate with, especially since he has 3 unstacked bands. I can reccomend plenty of youtube channels for slingshots and plenty of great slingshots for less than 20 dollars if anyone is interested. Building your own slingshot is also fun. If i was this guy id have researched slingshots more before I bought that cheapy, pot metal, amazon slingshot. You can get one made from 1 solid piece of steel for like 6 bucks. I personally wouldnt trust his slingshot not to break in my face. Its not a nice slingshot. Ive seen his slingshot on alibaba for like 3 bucks only to be resold on amazon for 20+.

Even went to a couple outdoor shooting tournaments where you'd basically go for a walk through the woods, stopping at designated spots along the path and shooting targets littered throughout the trees. Alot of people (including myself) actually use slingshots for hunting game. They are deadly at the right distances and are so fun to hunt with. We normally use flat bands tho as they are generally more accurate. If you look up gamekeeper john he is a master slingshot hunter and has amazing accuracy, I've seen hit a swinging steel ammo with the same size ammo. I myself would consider myself an intermediate shooter, I can land headshots on pigeons 3 out of 5 shots most of the time, and I can get body shots 99 percent of the time. Great to see people getting out with the catapults and shooting

I found a large round magnet when I was about Ten and accidently found it would pull the steel ball bearings I was shooting to it which saved me a 'lot' of money, 66 years ago, LOL
So I attached it to a section of an old fishing pole so I could save the bearings on the ground around my target.
I've always managed to get my bearings from auto shops, etc
since they are always throwing away used wheel bearings.
And if you go to Harbor Freight, Lowe's, or Home Depot, etc. they sell a large 3" diameter magnet which can be mounted onto wooden pole with a screw.
A bag of marbles is very economical and are fairly accurate out to 15 yards BTW.
Hope this information helps someone, because shooting a Slingshot is still a lot of fun, even after all these years and if necessary can put food on the table - from critters to fish.

i learned to shoot my slingshot using point shooting exclusively, and i can hit a pop can pretty easily at around 20 feet. i keep both eyes open, and i pull the pouch back like a bow. you can pull WAY farther when you pull across your chest like you are holding a bow, and it lets you shoot way, way further if you want. also i never hold my slingshot sideways. my point is, you don't "have to" shoot your sling shot in any particular way. it is very much an instinct shooting thing, and it really doesn't matter what you are doing so long as you are hitting your target consistently

brought back some great memories I had with my dad as a kid. he could hit anything from anywhere with a homemade slingshot and some random pebbles, none of this fancy stuff. blew my mind! he would also have been quite upset that you did not empty them beer bottles first... I love your content bro!
