In the 16th century, Captain Riccardo, the leader of a pirate band on the ship Black Hawk, face off against Manfred an evil tryant who has usurped the throne with his band of pirates. This powerful villain also kidnaps Elena, the daughter of the Duke, for marriage. But the famed Captain comes to her rescue.

THIS WAS RELEASED IN THE USA IN B&W, BUT FILMED IN COLOR. WHY?
_Clare, sometimes the old companies used to make a B&W print of some movies to be distributed for version in 16mm or even Super-8 movies...Because those prints in color were much more expensive, While the other one was more cheap...so there's Always those two versions on UA-cam sometimes...! I guess that this is the reason for it...!_

To add to what Paulo said, it's possible that the lack of an international star (ex. Steve Reeves of Hercules fame) may have prompted distributors to aim for a limited screening of the film in the US and abroad. So the option for the more economical (b/w) print may have been the best choice. Conversely, just about any sword and sandal flick with Steve Reeves (in color) would have better chances for big box office receipts in the US. So in that case a color print would be justified.
