- Coder Sk1ds has taken the belovd Sega Arcade Classic Turbo Outrun and brought it back to life with this excellent reimagining.

Man, this has really come on a huge amount since I last checked in on it, will definitely have to give it a download, excellent video! Had no idea there was a playable Lamborghini Countach in it!!!! Love that they've taken the Chase HQ sprite for it. Also love how fast it looks and the choice of music. I still reckon the car sprite sits just a smidge too high on the screen, but, ehhhh, that's just my own personal nit-pick. Also, excellent usage of the word _braggadocios_ there Dan, that's definitely a word I don't hear enough in my day-to-day life.

Pros:
- absolutely fluent gameplay, yet provides that "fake 3D" retro feeling 🥰
- forgiving mode for casual players as you mention
Cons:
- degree of pixelated car model doesn't match with the sharpness of the road marks (I'd prefer meeting in the middle)
- I don't like the way the horizon builds up at times

You could always try turning your display output to 480p, just a thought. Or use a CRT even better.

I like how they kept the Fantasy Zone shop in - it was in the original Turbo Outrun and also in Hot Rod's shop, too.
Speaking of Chase HQ (when discussing the countach), would´ve been great to have the 928 as well
I played it for about an hour today. It's very impressive and I particularly liked the cliffs and drops in this version, even if I did drive off them a few times. Worth keeping an eye on but absolutely playable in it's current state. Good stuff.

Do you know the bit I love the most? The fact that he used the C64 music for the intro. By far THE best music on any version of the game.
I'm a fan of Outrun and, unfortunately, I never got to play the original Turbo version because the Nintendo 3ds port wasn't released in America. I thank you and the creator for making this wish come true.
The fact it has mod support for additional cars and tracks for a retro, peusdo 3d racer is already blowing my mind! It's unheard of!

Wicked, be interesting to see if anyone can do a genesis remake. I’ve seen a few games and demos where it has done scaling somehow
I’d personally love to see this brought to the Sega Saturn, I think it would be really well received there and the system has the scaling capabilities. The roadside buildings and rival cars wouldn’t look as crisp as this version, but I think it would be a great fit for the current Saturn homebrew scene. - James.
Yes I’d like that but imagine it’s still a bugger to write games for the Saturn, whereas the genesis there’s lots of new games being created. I had the sms version and the genesis one wasn’t much better I’m sure with the new sdk and talent 6 months and we’d have a much better version
This is great. I only wish it had the drift system that Coast to Coast has but this guy did an amazing job.

Look pretty good. Wish they've increased the pixel count of the cars too. The cars are directly from the 80s while everything else got a boost. Kind of feel out of place. Hopefully if apply a good scanlines affect would help reduce those pixel blocks.

"Dagger DX" on the Ferraris? That's a "Knight Rider" Shoutout! The "Dagger DX" was in "Knights of the Fast Lane" (S3) and was a Koenig Twin Turbo 512BB! So its an '80's Love Letter! Not just an 80's Sega Love Letter!

@@Sk1ds87 Shame really, as Series 3 is my Favorite Knight Rider Series, and "Knights of the Fast Lane" is a Personal Favorite Episode (along, naturally, with KITT Vs KARR!) , due to that Two Tone Gold, George Barris Redesigned, Widebody, F1 Tyred, Koenig-Ferrari (turns out it was a Twin Turbo 308 rather than a Twin Turbo 512BB however! my mistake!) that was said, in Lore!, to be able to give even KITT a Run for his Money!
Idea... any chance of the Actual Dagger DX herself appearing in a Future Iteration of the Game? Especially it still Exists, Fully Running and Street Legal, In Real Life!
@@simeonyves5940 That would be an awesome idea! The biggest problem is that I don't have the patience to draw sprites. If someone can provide sprites of that car, I can put it in the game! (I was already thinking of adapting the Corvette sprite and turning it into KITT.)
@@Sk1ds87 Ahh, Same Problem! I would not even know where to begin in Drawing Sprites.
DeviantArt could be a good Place to find someone who could Draw Sprites for KITT (and a Stock '82 Firebird to go with him) and the Dagger DX however! hope that Helps :)

Almost. The starter sound you hear when you start the engine, is straight from F355 Challenge. The engine sound itself (from the DX40) is from sound samples of a mod for a racing simulator. But yes they sound very similar since they both have a flatplane V8 engine.
The shop theme I heard in this video is the same theme of the original Turbo Outrun "shop" (it was more like an upgrade selection screen). Are you sure it's from Fantasy Zone?

Well that's promising. It might need to pick a graphical style and probably add, you know, more of it but for an early beta that's pretty astonishing.

@@Sk1ds87 fantastic! I’ve never gotten to play Outrun in arcades, but my favourite experience with it was playing it on the Sega Saturn with that system’s steering wheel… buttery smooth 😁 Makes me annoyed that I’ve never found a Saturn to USB adapter compatible with it!
There is one issue ONLY for me on thos game. Just played it. Its sooo nice.. BUT!! i CANT CHANGE THE BUTTON CONFIG!!

I just checked it there and all is working as expected?
I got to Sk1ds page, hit the download button for the latest version, then the screen to donate or “just take me to the download” appeared, and when I clicked that the Dropbox opened no problem showing the files.

Sad this may eventually get canned due to sega doing the nintendo move. Also as good this game is, sega will not do this as sega believes this is so beneath them as this isn't "3" "Dee" unlike super mario 64 and no "soooonic attitudez"

These old "Sega" like rom hack games that do not run on original Sega hardware like Sega MegaDrive, MegaCD and Sega Saturn are really annoying...
It kinda defeats the purpose of "retro" when it's just being made using hardware and tools meant for 3d polygon FPSs on PC.
Sure Tiertex ruined the MegaDrive Turbo Outrun but when you think about how smooth the NES Rad Racer is in comparison then it makes you wonder why not just use the latest MegaDrive development tools and just do a complete Turbo Outrun from scratch and actually play the way it was meant to be played...
Better yet I wager that Turbo Outrun would eventually have been handled by the Japanese contract dev Sega Japan hired to handle the Sega Saturn Outrun which featured a 60fps mode (because they reprogrammed the arcade game to run natively on Sega Saturn hardware processors) so a silky smooth 60fps Sega Saturn Turbo Outrun conversion is more than possible and far more worth playing than on some PC.
“Really annoying”? I think that response is grossly unfair to the work and passion these people put into their projects.
The Saturn homebrew scene is incredibly vibrant right now (as is the Mega Drive’s) and while I’d love to see Sk1ds bring this to the Saturn, for now we can enjoy what he’s given us. And what motivation would he have to bring this to, as an example, the Saturn when his work is called disappointing?
Retro, as a term, does not apply solely to the hardware or the cart/disc/ROM.
Retro can inspire, just look at football (soccer if you’re American), where clubs will tap into nostalgia with “retro inspired” kits.
I think a little more appreciation for the work of those who are inspired to create these games is only fair. Embrace their passion, don’t dismiss it.
