Unfortunately Sega no longer has the Ferrari licence. So the only way that you're going to be able to play it now outside of the arcade is second hand, if you already have it, or through emulation.
@@joshoshea3194 You would think for the Outrun series that has already been done Ferrari would give it a lifetime licence. There's not really any financial reward out there it's just so the fans can appreciate this awesome nostalgia
There's nothing in this world quite like the magic of Outrun. The open road, the blue skies, the palmtrees, the thrilling speed, and your girlfriend by your side cheering you on.
The short answer is YES it is a bloody Masterpiece. Yu Suzuki is a legend, I used to love going to the Trocedero in London and competing against 4 players and winning by powersliding and driving like it's stolen. Good times!
Have been two times at Trocadero. First time in the 90s when Ridge Racer and a Multiplayer Daytona USA Setup were gaming heaven. The whole atmosphere was absolutely stunning. Loved it. The second time around 2018 when there was nothing more than a rather hidden floor with some leftover dusty cabinets. It was like a graveyard of old machines. A total disgrace.
I still cant understand how they didnt release more Outrun games after this masterpiece, the drifting its one of the most satisfying ever and the scenarios are beautiful
Drifting is great in Sega Rallye. No need to imitate it on asphalt. Ever seen a mid-engine car drift?? Feels so cheap in this premium optics and sound.
I guess the license fee for the prancing horse wasn’t cost effective anymore 😢 Suppose they could’ve just made more without the Ferrari cars, but then it wouldn’t be OutRun.
@@ArneChristianRosenfeldtThe game plays both ways though. Most of the best times are done without using the drifting mechanic, only on the harder routes are a couple of corners necessary. Where as heart attack mode probably forces it to be used for best scores. That leaves the other modes to play as you like… its just the drifting is so much fun regardless of how unrealistic it seems.
I still regularly play Outrun 2 and C2C. Amazing fun and so much replayability. Hope it gets added to the Insignia Xbox Live service to get some online matches going again. Great vid!
I see myself as a hardcore videogame fan who is special interested in all kinds of racing games. I definitely played hundreds of them and in my opinion Outrun 2 is one of the best! Such a smooth handling, the beauty of the landscape, the feeling of the cars, the music and the huge content. It's just a beauty!
@@SEGAGuys Thank you! You also made a wonderful video which showes it all! It makes me happy to see that the game gets represented so well! I am happy for you that you can enjoy it on the 360! For me was unplayable because it had occassionaly leg which ruined some races. So Outrun 2 was the reason for me to buy an original xbox, but I don't regret it! =)
For my money, this is the best racing game, as it's perfect in almost every possible way, and it's the only racing game I come back to on a regular basis. I loved the original game for the atmosphere, music and gameplay, but it was hard as nails. Outrun 2 is just amazing, as once you get to grips with power sliding, finishing the game can be done fairly quickly, but only on the easiest route. To make to to the finish on the other ones, requires some practice, but it's more than doable. It makes you say just one more try each time you don't make it, as you might just be feet from the checkpoint, which makes you say "just one more go". And that's what separates the great games, from the truly amazing ones.
Even on the OG Xbox it is a stunner of a looker. One thing I'd disagree with is about Outrunners not 'capturing' the spirit of the original. It totally did and it was extremely popular in the arcades in the early 90's.
I feel like, if Sega ever decides to make another OutRun game without the expensive Ferrari license, it should be called OutRunners 2. OutRunners had cars that were somewhat recognizable but with enough cosmetic changes so as to avoid any issues with licensing. (Not that I wouldn't want Ferrari to return officially for a full-fledged OutRun 3 if it were at all possible.)

Outrun was one of the very best games ever ... so much enjoyed the game in the arcades and at home ... would be super fantastic if a new version would come to current console generations ...
Why isn't Outrun Battle Royale a thing? Create about a dozen sector themes, with unique visuals, but also each with a unique style of racing (heavy turns, hilly straights, etc). Then, you have 100 racers all join a server, where they are delivered the same seed of sectors and traffic patterns, so that every experience will be equal, and the top x players of each sector get automatically delivered the next sector. Anyone who doesn't make it is eliminated, and has to start a new game, with a more accurate ELO, so you will be more evenly matched with players of your level. Because there's no direct interaction between players to affect the experience, learning the sectors and how they tend to procedurally generate becomes the optimal strategy, and it becomes infinitely playable, with bragging rights for completing 10 sectors and being the Winner. I think this style of game still has the opportunity to be successful with the right gameplay loop design.
I have OutRun 2 on my Xbox and OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast on my PS2. I love them both and they are worth the price. These games, Midtown Madness, Crazy Taxi and the San Francisco Rush series needs to make a comeback please.
Loving Sega, and Speed Zone aka Cannon Ball Run 3, and going to the Arcade to experience Outrun was a gift from the gaming gods like no other, unforgettable gaming memories :D
One of my favourite racing games for any console. I was addicted playing the 15 stage Continuous as it's fun and relaxing at the same time lol. PSP port is mighty impressive just the frame rate suffers a bit but if you do time attack or play the game without any cars on the road the frame rate will improve.
Thanks for this. I knew most details (Except for the Cannonball Run inspiration, I'll take your word on that :) but it's always nice to hear someone else's take :)
“Is it a Masterpiece?” Assuming the video is someone yelling YESSSSS! and then spending the other 13 minutes and 48 seconds tearing around massive curved roads with a colossal grin on their face.
I hope Sumo Digital or Raw Thrills would make a new Outrun. Also, I hope Namco makes a new Ridge Racer or R4 remake. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Outrun 2 and the 30th anniversary of Ridge Racer. Namco saved Klonoa, so of course they have to save Ridge Racer as well. Some people say arcade racing games won't sell, but Hot Wheels Unleashed has sold over 2 million copies. It's a pity that only Cruis'n survived. Daytona USA is on the brink of death due to SEGA exiting the arcade business. Raw Thrills made Cruis'n Blast, Switch version Cruis'n Blast, and even made a new Fast & Furious Arcade.
Agree, it’s definitively a genre that’s neglected. And don’t get me wrong, I love a bit of Forza Horizon but there’s some special about the 90’s arcade racer vibe, which OutRun 2 manages to capture brilliantly despite coming out well into the new millennium. Appreciate you watching and commenting, we love it when people get involved and share their thoughts. Thanks! - James.
Great video, and i do love this game. It's one of the best Sega racing games in my opinion, together with Sega Rally and ....... SCUD RACE. I can't say how much i regret that never ported Scud Race to the Dreamcast - it's arcade racing perfection, i absolutely love the track designs.
I play Outrun 2 via psp emulation, upscaled to 720p with a 60fps hack on my Nintnedo Switch 😂😂 I do love this game! 2 is bloody hard. SP is much more forgiving!
Great video! I have this one on my list of games to start playing through with a wheel setup. The drifting is just too sweet! My main problem is figuring out which version I'd have to emulate on PC to get the best/easiest setup with the wheel. I think the original arcade version is best, even though there's a PC native port of the game, I'm not sure it has proper wheel support.
To think, I played the original game in the early 80's on the Commadore 64 when I was between the age of 2 - 4 years old, and this version improved everything the original did and more. This game is the reason I love racing games. Going from this to the Need For Speed series (NFS:II for the start), Daytona USA, the Crusin' Series, to Gran Turismo and Grid, this was pinnacle racing fun! Luckily, I have this game for the PS3 and PC. Might go back to this tonight, though I need to start playing NFS: Unbound or finish Heat. So many good choices!
Nice analysis, two things thoug: 1 Outrun's 2 Chihiro had 512mb of ram instead of the 64mb the Xbox has. Having this doesn't mean the game uses it all (it was mostly for loading times) but that explains the much worse textures and makes this conversion an even bigger landmark, but there is also an impact on performance. In fact if you upgrade your xbox for 128mb ram (yes you are reading it right) Virtua Cop 3 will boot, but I've red Outrun 2 freezes. 2 Try manual powersliding better, is more fun and clean. Just instead of braking go down-then up a march.
Thank you! Cheers for the tips also! For the RAM, I've read it could vary between 128MB and 1GB, and an interview I read with Sumo suggested "double", though they may have been mistaken, especially interesting if the game doesn't boot with that much RAM on Xbox - Dan
I remember at the time having a blast playing Coast 2 Coast on PC. It was always so fun playing it for a couple of complete runs while Risky Ride or other bangers were playing in the background.
I have this game and absolutely love it on my OG Xbox and love the original on may Saturn. Love the music in the original and on part 2 also. Magical Sound Shower and Passing Breeze were my two favorite tunes.
OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast on PC is the greatest video game of all-time as far as I'm concerned! (with the FXT mod plus the simple fix to restore the missing lens flare & bloom effects)
I am not ashamed to say I spent most of my pocket money in my youth on this game. We used to get the train to Gatwick airport every weekend and play it there.
Yes. Yes it is! And I played it from launch, then for years on the PSP port. It was so well made and solid and fun, that it is a crime you cannot purchase it for any platform right now.
Played all non and arcade racers in the world and Outrun 2 SP SDX is definitly one of the third best racing games ever made! Hoping so much that Suzuki makes a third one before he leaves this planet...
@@HALFSQUASHED If you just look at the arcade, clearly Daytona USA 2 and Scud Race. If you look at other systems, you probably have to add Forza Horizon and Gran Turismo series.
YES!! YES!! YES!! OutRun 2 is such a great sequel - I absolutely love it. I had no Idea Sumo were a british team, they certainly pulled off an amazing Xbox port (albeit working in tandem with AM2) - Which reminds me, I really need to get a new PSU for my Xbox, but until I then, at least I have the awesome PSP Outrun 2006 : Coast to Coast to keep me happy.
Wicked video of the best driving game to ever grace this planet. Good round up sir and im shocked at how good the original outrun 2 looks on a 360 compared to the OG Xbox.
Cheers Tom! Agree! Though all the 360 does is upscale the existing image, the original Xbox image would look pretty much the same run through the right cables, an incredible achievement! - Dan
Absolutely gorgeous. That power-sliding is sweet to watch. I sure wish it were on PSX consoles. I'd pay $50 or more for this game. I'm a Gran Turismo player but I would definitely enjoy playing Outrun 2.
If you still have access to a PS2, you can pick up the updated version called OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast. While ridiculously expensive on the OG Xbox, it remains cheap on the PS2. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! - James.
wish this game sequel, dynamite deka (die hard arcade) series, spikeout series, zombie revenge game and Outfoxies make a return for modern consoles and PC.. with or without the license since some game have remasters or remakes nowadays...

One of my favourite racing games for any console. I was addicted playing the 15 stage Continuous as it's fun and relaxing at the same time lol. PSP port is mighty impressive just the frame rate suffers a bit but if you do time attack or play the game without any cars on the road the frame rate will improve.
Played it in the arcades and finished it every time. Loved playing it when it came out on xbox. True classic game.
Thanks for this. I knew most details (Except for the Cannonball Run inspiration, I'll take your word on that :) but it's always nice to hear someone else's take :)
Brilliant video for a timeless classic!🥂
The best review I've ever seen on this masterpiece. Thanks so much.
Wow, thank you! 💙🙏🏻
Wish Outrun 2 was ported to Dreamcast - Love both Outrun and Outrun 2.
“Is it a Masterpiece?”
Assuming the video is someone yelling YESSSSS! and then spending the other 13 minutes and 48 seconds tearing around massive curved roads with a colossal grin on their face.
Hope you enjoyed the video, Craig! Been a fan of your writing for a long time now.
@@SEGAGuysVery kind. And, yep, a great video about one of my favourite games.
I kept my 360 for this and Afterburner Climax.
❤❤❤
Nice one Dan this is one of my favourite arcades. I actually haven't played any console versions that much. Need to change that.
Cheers mate! Definitely one to grab hold of while it's affordable, the Xbox game can be had for around a tenner - Dan
Imo Outrunners does have the magic.
It's an often overlooked gem. I think it is the best looking 2D/sprite arcade racer of all time.
Shame it's hard to find anything
Thanks! - James.
Try hotshot racing it uses the engine from outrun 2
Criminal this and 2006 don't come to current platforms.
Played this to death on xbox. Being an 80s kid this brought back memories.
Of course its a masterpiece. I still playing it today. Coast to coast version to. Still fun, graphics are still splendid.
Great video! You guys nailed it
Thank you Scott! Glad you enjoyed it. 💙
Yes it is…say no more!!! I adore the camera response… sensual feelings while driving thanks to the cam!!!
Great video, and i do love this game. It's one of the best Sega racing games in my opinion, together with Sega Rally and ....... SCUD RACE.
I can't say how much i regret that never ported Scud Race to the Dreamcast - it's arcade racing perfection, i absolutely love the track designs.
I've been playing the Playstation 2 version of this game, it is incredible fun. A great game.
It really is, and you’re possibly the best account name to reply yet … the best screen villain from my favourite movie of all time! 😃 - James.
@@SEGAGuys Ha thank you, Clarence Boddicker is my favorite movie bad guy aswell, I belive that character was very unique.
I play Outrun 2 via psp emulation, upscaled to 720p with a 60fps hack on my Nintnedo Switch 😂😂
I do love this game!
@@SEGAGuys It will boot on 128MB
Unless they sort the Ferrari license, we're unlikely to see it, sadly. But my GOD, OR2 and SP/C2C are divine. Genius doesn't age.
The soundtrack is just superb isn’t it? It’s all part of that perfect package, but I do love Night Flight myself, that’s my go to track. - James.
OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast on PC is the greatest video game of all-time as far as I'm concerned!
(with the FXT mod plus the simple fix to restore the missing lens flare & bloom effects)
first time i played this i crashed around the third stage because i couldn't see through the tears.
Still my one of my favorite racing games today!
I am not ashamed to say I spent most of my pocket money in my youth on this game. We used to get the train to Gatwick airport every weekend and play it there.
Have a modded original Xbox with this game on it , still playing it....
Best sega arcade racer artistic wise and gameplay are top notch, also the camera is flawless
My favorite racing videogame ever.
Outrun a classic and Outrun 2 was a great follow up i enjoyed it alot in London arcades playing with friends and also on the PS2.
For those interested a version of outrun 2 for pc Outrun 2006 is currently in myabandonware.
Yes.
What are the other two best racing games?
@@HALFSQUASHED If you just look at the arcade, clearly Daytona USA 2 and Scud Race. If you look at other systems, you probably have to add Forza Horizon and Gran Turismo series.
Short answer: YES, IT IS!
Long answer: HELL YEAH IT IS!!!
YES!! YES!!
- Dan
Outrun 2 on OG Xbox is one of the best original xbox game ever made in 2004.
I still have my psp and xbox copies. It's definitely a masterpiece of a game.
I still play it on my Rog ally.
- James.
@@SEGAGuys Or PC version, you can add good wheel for it, control is immediate, 5-year-old children can already learn to drive without any problem.
Fantastic game and another great video guys
wish this game sequel, dynamite deka (die hard arcade) series, spikeout series, zombie revenge game and Outfoxies make a return for modern consoles and PC.. with or without the license since some game have remasters or remakes nowadays...
Agreed, I think in an era of gaming full of open world, cinematic story telling, third person games we need the light relief and over the top arcade fun of years gone by. - James.
@@SEGAGuys we just want games are not triple A, long story like final fantasy etc.. more like back to arcade days like power stone, House of the dead and Mr driller..
Outrun 2 SP Japanese masterpiece ! THANK YOU JAPAN
That was genius including scud race and daytona 2 tracks on here... that is the definition of being creative.
Outrun 2 is class. I played it to death on my PC. Finished every stage.
The Pc version of Out Run 2006 Coast to Coast is abandonware and easy to get anywhere on internet. 100% recommended
I can't believe this game is 20 years old! Safe to say it's aged well. More time has gone by since Outrun 2 to now, than Outrun 1 to Outrun 2. That's depressing haha
We feel your pain Mark, these gaming anniversaries definitely age us! 😂 Saturn turning 30 in November 2024 might be the tipping point though. 🤣
@@SEGAGuys yeah 100%!
It's not my #1 all-time favorite Sega racer (there's so many amazing games to choose from), but it's a great game and truly excellent home port
I think Outrun OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is the best version, specifically the PC version with the FXT mod, it totally revamps the graphics and even updates the control options to include steering wheel and force feedback!
I LOVE this game, and I love that I was able to consistently beat this game in the arcade, as well as Time Crisis 2 (on one credit) ❤
Really cool video! Love this game
I don't remember all those extras on there.. I'll have to go back and play it again.
