Whitney and Clair tough for most people. Bugsy and Falkner unforgettable for Chikorita users, although Bugsy was in a league of his own if you followed a specific team comp. Chuck and his Poliwrath were a pain for a lot of Quilava trainers at the time and depending on other factors Jasmine and Morty could be troublesome. Honestly the only guy who was a pushover for almost everyone was Pryce. Yep you're right!
Nah i found pryce to be my second hardest if i was playing this game with a chikorita start and had really bad luck when it came to my pokemon team comp since i was nuzlocking the remakes right away. I found his team hard with the dewgong rest sleep talk combo because of its random luck, you would say Pryce is hard for you if your luck just about made you have to fight him with meganium and his rest sleep talk ice beam. Not too mention he also had a seel with a similiar combo but instead with snore making my specially defensive pokemon have troubleswith it early forcing me to switch to either one of my 2 physically defensive pokemon. I honeslty found bugsy hard too but thats only because my geodude died right before her gym. Clair was ez as i just needed to use my dragon pulse gyarados to win and occasionally id have to use my piloswine to save my gyarados from any danger with ice shard.
I found chuck to be my hardest in every game i have played against him because thats when you start building your team to its final stages and he was just sitting there with average to good type coverage beastly stats on his pokemon and some unexpected high level pokemon. Plus his gym is always rattling if u battle him after that annoying guy chasing after Suicune.
The pacing of HGSS was just terrible. The first two were easy unless you picked Chikorita, but imo she was the worst starter to take since you can easily catch other grass types but fire types were quite hard to come by from what I can remember. Whitney's Miltank obviously causes most people a lot of pain, but after her, Morty is really damn easy. That gym might as well have been called the Gastly Gym since the only Pokemon used by anyone in there were Gastly and his evolutions. I didn't have much trouble with him though. The next three gyms though, I'm pretty sure, can be done in any order, although it is quite awkward if you go out of the desired order (Chuck, Jasmine, then Pryce) but nevertheless GF accounted for this and literally made it so those three gyms had sort of equal Pokemon levels. Chuck has 29, 31, Jasmine has 30, 30, 35 and Pryce has 30, 32, 34 so really, there's a tiny level difference between them all, making these ones quite easy and not giving your team much time to level up. Then there's fucking Clair. She jumps right up to 4 pokemon that are in the high 30s and has a fucking Kingdra level 41 with only ONE weakness, which also has STAB Dragon Pulse against everything but Steel, so unless you're packing a Magneton, good luck. So really, the gyms were easy for the most part except in some cases, and the later parts of the game are so messed up in their level pacing that it does become very difficult without grinding, and I don't think grinding should be necessary to complete a Pokemon game. You should be given roughly enough exp from trainers to have a chance to progress and win against a gym, but grinding is available if you want more of the edge.
Coming up to 23 I can proudly say I grew up with Kanto and Johto...and loved every second/minute (until the batteries ran out and mum hadn't gone shopping and having to wait at least a day for new batteries)
Tbh i never had a problem with bug and flying gym with chikorita. Mainly cause you can get a geodude before the flying gym and flying types before bugsy

Love the taiko drums at the beginning. It really gives us a sense of the traditional culture of Johto and where Johto is based in Japan. Yet it has a modern feel.

My beginner was Totodile which was Feralgator at 37 and my zubat was golbat at 32. Way higher leveled. Both were females. 2 shotted Miltank. Spent a few hours grinding but well worth being able to knock everything out.

I'm a big RPer and this just became my characters theme song. perfect fit for him. He's a johto trainer with some serious issues. His training method is to actually spar with his pokemon. He's completely hardcore and his temper will leave you burned. this rock combined with the classic theme of the gyms souns great for him. especially with the desperation at certain points.

I'm a big RPer and this just became my characters theme song. perfect fit for him. He's a johto trainer with some serious issues. His training method is to actually spar with his pokemon. He's completely hardcore and his temper will leave you burned. this rock combined with the classic theme of the gyms souns great for him. especially with the desperation at certain points.
